Cheapest Target Gift Card in the US 2026: Every Channel Ranked

Cheapest Target gift card in the US for 2026: Target discounts it one December weekend via Target Circle; rewards portals, employer platforms, and resale next.
For well over a decade, gift cards have ranked as the single most requested holiday gift in the National Retail Federation's annual winter holidays consumer survey, and in that entire stretch there has been exactly one weekend a year when a major US general retailer discounts its own general-purpose card: Target's December gift card sale. Every other "cheap Target gift card" is a card bought at face value with something else attached, or a card bought from a stranger.
This guide ranks every legitimate way to get a Target gift card, or the equivalent Target spend, below face value in the United States as of September 2026: the Target Circle gift card sale, the Target Circle Card and Circle 360, issuer rewards portals, employer reward platforms, holiday bonus promotions on third-party cards bought at Target, airline and hotel loyalty malls, and resale marketplaces with their guarantee windows. For each: mechanism, timing, fine print, risk. Then a verdict for gifting, own spend, and bulk, and an honest note on where ShopBack cashback fits.
The short answer
The cheapest Target gift card is the one bought during the Target Circle gift card sale, one weekend in the first half of December, for Circle members, capped per household, with the percentage and cap published on Target's Circle page the week it runs. Nothing else beats it on price for an eligible buyer. The dependable channel outside that weekend is an issuer rewards portal during a promotion on selected gift cards. For own spend, the Target Circle Card's 5% discount on most purchases, per the Target Circle Card page, is bigger than any gift card channel, and it excludes gift cards. Target cards are not sold at Costco, Kroger, or Walmart. Resale on Raise, CardCash, or eBay shows a shallow discount and carries the whole card as downside.
Earn cashback on eligible Target.com orders via ShopBack, and use the channels below for the card itself.
Every Target gift card channel in the US, ranked
| Channel | What you get | Discount mechanism | Best timing | Main catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Target Circle gift card sale | Target GiftCard below face value | Target-funded percentage off, capped | One weekend, first half of December 2026 | Circle members, per-household cap, not announced until days before |
| Issuer rewards portals (Chase, Amex, Citi, Discover, Capital One) | Target gift card for points | Points-to-dollar at a set rate, periodic promotions | Holiday-stretch portal promos | Weak value for transferable points |
| Target Circle Card | 5% off most purchases, per Target | Retailer card discount | Any time | Excludes gift cards |
| Employer and benefit platforms | eGift card at a small discount | Employer-negotiated rate | Enrollment windows, holidays | Not public |
| Holiday third-party card bonuses at Target | Target GiftCard for buying select brands | Target-funded promotion | Black Friday to Cyber Monday (Nov 27 to 30, 2026), pre-Christmas | Only on listed brands |
| Airline and hotel malls (Delta, United, Southwest, Hilton Honors) | Target gift card for miles or points | Miles-to-dollar conversion | Rarely | Poor value per mile |
| Target direct, rest of year | Card at face value | None | Any time | No discount |
| Resale (Raise, CardCash, eBay, forums) | Someone else's card | Seller discount | Any time | Drained-card risk, guarantee window only |
The ranking is by how reliably the channel beats face value at low risk, which is why the December sale sits on top and resale sits last despite often showing the lowest price.
Why Target discounts its own card once a year and never otherwise
A Target GiftCard is cash Target holds until it is spent, and most of the year Target has no reason to sell that for less. The December sale is a customer-acquisition event: it fills Target Circle with new members, pulls holiday spend into Target rather than Walmart or Amazon, and front-loads January and February traffic from people spending the balance. That is why it is member-only, capped per household, and timed after Cyber Monday but before the final pre-Christmas week, and why Target has repeated the shape of the sale year after year while keeping the exact dates quiet until days before.
The Target Circle gift card sale: how to be ready
The mechanics are consistent. Join Target Circle, which is free, and sign in on Target.com or the app. On the sale weekend, Target GiftCards in stores and online carry a percentage off for Circle members, up to a per-household cap on the discounted amount. The discounted cards cannot be paid for with other Target GiftCards, the Target Circle Card discount does not apply because gift cards are excluded from it, and the purchase does not earn Circle rewards. The percentage, the cap, and the dates for 2026 will be on Target's Circle page and in the app when announced; as of September 2026 they are not published, and recent years have landed on a weekend in the first half of December.
Being ready means three things. Have the Circle account set up before December. Turn on Target app notifications so the announcement lands. Decide the household's Target spend for the following three months in advance, because the cap is the real limit and the best use of a capped discount is money you were going to spend at Target anyway.
Issuer rewards portals
Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou Rewards, Discover, Capital One, TD Bank, and other issuer portals list Target gift cards at a points cost per denomination, with the portal page as the live source. The discount is the gap between that cost and what the same points return elsewhere. For flat cashback programs the Target card is usually neutral against statement credit. For transferable points it is usually expensive, except during an issuer promotion on selected gift cards, which cluster in the November and December stretch; then a Target card can cost fewer points than cash would, and the portal is the cheapest channel outside the December sale.
The Target Circle Card and Circle 360
The Target Circle Card, formerly the RedCard, gives a 5% discount on most purchases at Target stores and Target.com per the Target Circle Card page as of September 2026, and that discount excludes Target GiftCards and third-party gift cards sold at Target. For own spend that exclusion is the whole point: the Circle Card already delivers more than any gift card channel on the same groceries and household goods, so a Target regular has no reason to route spend through a gift card except on the December sale weekend, when the capped gift card discount stacks ahead of the Circle Card on the later purchases.
Target Circle 360 is the paid membership for same-day delivery and other benefits; it does not discount gift cards. Target Circle Week, which Target has run in spring, summer, and around early October in recent years, is a promotions week on merchandise and also does not discount Target's own card.
Employer and benefit platforms
Large employers and benefits providers run reward platforms where Target eGift cards are offered at a small negotiated discount. The rate is not public and differs by employer. Where a workplace perks portal exists, it is a standing, uncapped, risk-free discount on a Target card, which makes it the best channel for anyone who has it outside the December weekend.
Holiday bonus promotions on third-party cards bought at Target
Around Black Friday on November 27 through Cyber Monday on November 30, 2026, and again in the week before Christmas, Target's weekly ad has historically included promotions where buying selected third-party gift cards, for brands such as Apple, Starbucks, or Nintendo, earns a Target GiftCard as a bonus or carries a Target Circle offer. The brands and terms are on that week's ad. This is a Target-funded bonus on someone else's card, not a discount on Target's own, and it helps only if the third-party card was wanted anyway.
Airline and hotel loyalty malls
Delta SkyMiles, United MileagePlus, Southwest Rapid Rewards, and Hilton Honors list retailer gift cards, including Target, in their merchandise malls at conversion rates far below what travel redemptions return. Use them only for miles about to expire with no trip planned.
Resale marketplaces
Raise, CardCash, eBay listings, and forum exchanges carry Target cards constantly because demand is broad, with listings a little below face value. The legitimate seller received a Target card and wants cash; the fraudulent one is selling an empty card, a card they will drain after the sale through a retained number and access code, or a card bought with stolen payment details that is voided later.
Target's GiftCard terms do not allow redemption for cash and Target does not replace a card that was already spent. The marketplace's guarantee window is the only protection, so a resold Target card must be checked on Target's balance page and loaded into a Target account or spent the same day. Because the discount is shallow and the downside is the whole card, resale is a channel for immediate spending, not a plan, and it never beats the December sale for anyone eligible for it.
Red flags, per the Federal Trade Commission's gift card scam guidance and Target's gift card scams page: payment requested outside the marketplace; a price far below face value; a photo of the card rather than a platform transfer; many cards from one seller; and, in a separate category entirely, any claim that a prize fee, fine, bill, or deposit is payable in Target gift cards, which is a scam without exception.
Fine print that changes the math
Expiry and fees. Target GiftCards do not expire and carry no fees, per the terms. The federal Credit CARD Act of 2009, as explained by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, separately requires at least five years of validity on US gift cards and restricts dormancy fees.
Where it works. Target stores and Target.com, including Target Circle 360 delivery orders. Balance draws down across purchases, so partial redemption is automatic, and remaining balance is visible on Target.com and in the app.
Exclusions. Target GiftCards cannot buy Target GiftCards, prepaid cards, or most third-party gift cards, which is the rule that stops the December discount being churned. Not redeemable for cash except where state law requires.
Stacking with Target's own promotions. Paying with gift card balance does not block Target Circle offers, Circle earnings on the purchase, clearance pricing, or the Circle Card discount on eligible items, so a card bought on the December weekend stacks with every shelf-side discount on the later purchase.
Is it worth chasing a Target gift card discount at all?
For a Target household, yes, in one specific way: buy up to the cap on the December sale weekend for the next quarter's Target spend, and keep the Circle Card for everything else. An issuer portal promotion is a second, smaller opportunity. For a gift, the December weekend is also the answer if the timing works; otherwise face value from Target. For resale, only with same-day spending and a guarantee window.
Verdict by use case
Gifting. Buy on the December sale weekend if the gift is for the holidays, up to the cap. Otherwise buy a Target eGift card or physical card at face value from Target, or redeem one from an issuer portal during a promotion; both are as gift-safe as each other. Never gift a resold card.
Own spend. Use the Circle Card for the daily 5% on eligible purchases, buy gift cards only on the December weekend up to the cap, clip Target Circle offers in the app, and let it all stack at the register. Skip airline malls and resale.
Bulk buy. Target's corporate gift card program sells volume at face value with invoicing and bulk delivery, which is the right route for employee or client gifts; the December sale is capped per household, portals cap redemptions, and resale does not scale. For bulk spend rather than gifts, a Target Circle Card on a business account is the structure.
Where ShopBack cashback fits
ShopBack lists Target as a US cashback store for eligible Target.com orders. The mechanism is the usual one: start from the ShopBack app or the Cashback Buddy browser extension, complete the eligible order in that session, and cashback via ShopBack tracks on it. Gift cards are excluded from Target cashback under the merchant terms on the ShopBack Target store page, so buying the card through ShopBack earns nothing.
Where ShopBack fits is after the discount. Buy the card on the December weekend or through a portal, then shop eligible Target.com categories through ShopBack; whether an order paid with Target GiftCard balance qualifies is governed by the merchant terms on the store page, which are the live source. ShopBack also lists GiftCards.com, the Blackhawk Network marketplace, as a US store, which is a route for other brands' cards rather than a discount on Target's. The clean model is discount from the channel, cashback from the eligible purchase that follows.
Methodology
This piece was built from Target's GiftCard terms, Target Circle and Target Circle Card pages, gift card scams page, and recent years' Circle gift card sale announcements; the National Retail Federation's winter holidays consumer survey pages; the rewards redemption pages of Chase, American Express, Citi, Discover, Capital One, and TD Bank; the Federal Trade Commission's gift card scam guidance and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's gift card expiry explainer; and the published policies of Raise, CardCash, and eBay, all read in September 2026. The December sale percentage and cap are not quoted because Target publishes them only when the sale is announced; the 5% Circle Card figure is from the Target Circle Card page as of September 2026.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Target Circle gift card sale and how does it work?
Once a year, on a single weekend in the first half of December, Target discounts its own Target GiftCards for Target Circle members, in stores and on Target.com, with a per-household cap on the discounted amount. The discount percentage, the cap, and the exact dates are published on Target's Circle page and in the Target app in the days before the sale, and have been consistent in shape from year to year. You must be signed into a Target Circle account, the discounted cards cannot be bought with other Target GiftCards, and the discount does not combine with the Target Circle Card discount, which excludes gift cards anyway. It is one of the very few times any major US retailer discounts its own general-purpose card.
How do issuer rewards portals turn points into Target gift cards?
Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou Rewards, Discover, Capital One, and other issuer portals list Target gift cards at a points cost per denomination. The discount is the gap between that points cost and what the same points would return as statement credit or travel. Issuers run periodic promotions where selected gift cards cost fewer points, usually in the holiday stretch, and that is when a Target card from a portal is cheaper than cash. Outside those windows the rate is at or below one cent per point, neutral for flat cashback programs and expensive for transferable points.
How does the Target Circle Card interact with Target gift cards?
The Target Circle Card, formerly the RedCard, gives a 5% discount on most Target purchases per the Target Circle Card page as of September 2026, and Target GiftCards are on its exclusion list, so you cannot buy a Target GiftCard at a discount with it. You can, however, pay for groceries, home goods, and most other items with the card and get the 5% off, which for own spend is a bigger standing discount than any gift card channel delivers. Third-party gift cards sold at Target are also excluded from the Circle Card discount.
Is a Target gift card cheaper at Costco, Kroger, or Walmart?
No, because none of them stock it. Target GiftCards are sold at Target stores, on Target.com, and through Target's own corporate program, and a direct competitor such as Walmart or a grocery chain such as Kroger does not carry a rival's card. Costco, Sam's Club, and BJ's sell discounted multi-packs of other brands' cards, not Target's. For the Target card specifically, the only sellers are Target, issuer portals, employer platforms, and resale.
Is a resold Target gift card from Raise or CardCash cheaper than the December sale?
On sticker price, sometimes, but the December sale is capped, member-only, and risk-free, while resale is uncapped and carries the whole card as downside. Target's GiftCard terms do not permit redemption for cash and Target will not replace a card that was already spent, so a resold card must be checked at Target's balance page and loaded into a Target account or spent the same day, inside the marketplace's guarantee window. Target cards are heavily traded on resale sites because demand is broad, which keeps the discount shallow. The December sale beats resale for anyone eligible; resale is for same-day spending only.
When is the Target gift card sale in 2026?
Target announces the exact weekend on its Circle page and in the app a few days ahead, and in recent years it has fallen on a weekend in the first half of December, after Cyber Monday and before the final pre-Christmas week. As of September 2026 the 2026 dates are not yet published. The practical move is to join Target Circle now, turn on app notifications, and expect the sale in the first two weekends of December 2026; the discount does not run during Black Friday on November 27 or Cyber Monday on November 30.
When are third-party gift cards cheapest at Target in Q4 2026?
Black Friday to Cyber Monday, November 27 to 30, 2026, and the week before Christmas. Target runs holiday promotions where buying selected third-party gift cards, such as Apple, Starbucks, or Nintendo, earns a Target GiftCard as a bonus or carries a Target Circle offer, with the brands and terms on that week's ad. These promotions are Target-funded bonuses on someone else's card and do not apply to Target's own card.
Do Target gift cards expire, and can I use one to buy another gift card?
Target GiftCards do not expire and carry no fees, per Target's GiftCard terms. The federal Credit CARD Act of 2009, as explained by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, separately requires at least five years of validity on US gift cards. Balance draws down across purchases, so partial redemption is automatic, and remaining balance can be checked on Target.com or in the app. Target GiftCards cannot be used to buy Target GiftCards, prepaid cards, or most third-party gift cards, which is the rule that prevents the December discount from being churned, and they are not redeemable for cash except where state law requires.
Does ShopBack cashback apply to Target gift cards or to Target.com orders paid with one?
Not to the gift card purchase, because gift cards are excluded from Target cashback under the merchant terms on the ShopBack Target store page. ShopBack lists Target as a US cashback merchant for eligible Target.com orders, and cashback via ShopBack applies when the session starts from the ShopBack app or the Cashback Buddy browser extension and the eligible order is completed in that session. Whether an order paid with Target GiftCard balance qualifies is governed by those merchant terms, so the clean model is discount from the December sale or a portal, cashback from the eligible order that follows.
Someone online says I won a prize and must pay a fee in Target gift cards. What now?
It is a scam, every time. The Federal Trade Commission's gift card scam guidance and Target's own gift card scams page state that no government agency, prize sweepstakes, utility, employer, or legitimate business accepts Target gift cards as payment, and that the request to read card numbers over the phone or by message is the scam itself. Target publishes a reporting path and the FTC takes reports at its consumer site. If numbers were already shared, Target asks that you contact it immediately, because unredeemed balance can sometimes be frozen.

- The Target Circle Card's 5% discount, per Target's page, excludes gift cards and already beats any gift card channel for own spend.
- Target cards are not sold at Costco, Kroger, or Walmart; the only sellers are Target, portals, employer platforms, and resale.
- Holiday bonuses on third-party cards at Target run around Black Friday to Cyber Monday (November 27 to 30, 2026) and do not touch Target's own card.
