Is AliExpress Legit and Safe for US Buyers in 2026?
Is AliExpress legit for US buyers in 2026? AliExpress is an online marketplace owned by Alibaba Group, running since 2010, with a published Buyer Protection program that refunds orders that do not arrive or are not as described. Here is what its policies, app ratings and refund steps say, and how to pay less on an AliExpress order through ShopBack US.
Is AliExpress Legit and Safe for US Buyers in 2026?
Published: 8 October 2026 · Last updated: 8 October 2026 · Author: Trang Do, Beauty Editor, ShopBack US
For US buyers in 2026, AliExpress is a large online marketplace owned by Alibaba Group, running since 2010, where independent sellers list products and AliExpress runs a Buyer Protection program. According to AliExpress, you can get a refund if an item does not arrive within the guaranteed delivery window, or arrives damaged or not as described and you raise it within 15 days. Quality depends on the seller and listing you pick.
That scale is why the question keeps coming up. The AliExpress app shows more than 500 million downloads and about 16.3 million reviews on Google Play at the time of writing. The useful question is less "is it real" and more "how do I order well from it", which is what this page covers.
ShopBack US is a free cashback app and website. Before you pay on AliExpress, open AliExpress on ShopBack, tap through and shop as normal, and part of what you spend comes back as cash you can withdraw. Join ShopBack US free here before your next order.
Is AliExpress legit and safe for US buyers?
AliExpress is a widely used shopping marketplace with published Buyer Protection terms, but it is a marketplace, so what you receive depends on the seller and the listing. Here are the facts that matter, with where each one comes from.
| What you want to know | The fact | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | Alibaba Group | Wikipedia |
| When it launched | 2010 | Wikipedia |
| How it sells | Independent sellers, mostly small businesses in China and some in other locations, list products; AliExpress acts as the platform | Wikipedia |
| Refund if not received | Covered if the item does not arrive or is lost in transit within the guaranteed delivery window on the order page | AliExpress Buyer Protection page, at the time of writing |
| Refund if not as described | Covered if the item does not match the description or photos, arrives damaged or short, raised within 15 days of receipt | AliExpress Buyer Protection page, at the time of writing |
| Google Play rating | 4.3 stars from about 16.3 million reviews, 500 million plus downloads | Google Play, at the time of writing |
| App Store rating (US) | 4.7 stars from about 680,000 ratings | Apple App Store, at the time of writing |
What that adds up to: you are buying through a platform owned by Alibaba Group, with written refund rules you can use. What it does not tell you is whether a given phone case, dress or tool will match its photos. That part is on the listing, so the checks further down matter more than the brand name.
Other US stores that sell low-cost everyday goods online and are on ShopBack US include Temu, SHEIN, eBay, Walmart and Target.
Is AliExpress legit? What AliExpress itself says
On its own Buyer Protection page, AliExpress says you can "get a refund if your item doesn't arrive, arrived damaged, or isn't as described within the protection period". That is the official starting point if you are looking for what aliexpress.com says about buying safely.
According to that page, at the time of writing, Buyer Protection covers two cases:
- The order does not match the description or photos, arrived damaged, or arrived short, and you raise it within 15 days of receiving the items.
- The item did not arrive or was lost in transit within the guaranteed delivery window shown on your order detail page.
AliExpress also says this guarantee is in addition to, and does not limit, your statutory rights as a consumer under the laws where you live.
Is AliExpress legit in 2026? What changed
The biggest change for US buyers is cost at the border. The US ended the de minimis exemption for goods from China on 2 May 2025, so low-cost parcels that used to come in duty-free under the old $800 limit no longer do, according to public reporting summarised on Wikipedia.
In practice that means:
- Check the full total at checkout. Compare the final price for your whole cart, not the item price on the listing.
- Compare with US stores. For everyday items, check the same or a similar product at Walmart, Target, Temu or SHEIN before you buy. No single store is cheapest every time.
- The Buyer Protection terms still apply. AliExpress's page still describes refunds for items not received or not as described, within the stated time limits.
AliExpress reviews, complaints and refunds in the US (2026)
AliExpress reviews are split: the star averages are high, while written complaints focus on delivery times, items that differ from photos and how disputes are resolved. At the time of writing, the AliExpress app has 4.3 stars on Google Play from about 16.3 million reviews and 4.7 stars on the US App Store from about 680,000 ratings.
The common complaints, and what to do about each:
- The item does not look like the photo. Read reviews that include buyer photos, check the size chart or measurements, and pick listings with many reviews and an established store.
- The parcel is late or missing. Note the delivery window on your order page. Buyer Protection covers items that do not arrive within the guaranteed window shown there, according to AliExpress.
- The item arrives damaged or short. Take photos as soon as you open it and raise it within 15 days of receipt, which is the window AliExpress gives for these cases.
- The refund takes time. File the request from the order itself so it is logged, and keep the item and packaging until the case is closed. AliExpress says it refunds to your original payment method or, if you choose and conditions are met, to its fast refund option.
AliExpress official refund policy and customer service
According to AliExpress, the refund process has three steps: contact the seller, file a return or refund request from the order, then get refunded if the order is eligible.
How it works, as AliExpress describes it at the time of writing:
- Contact the seller first. Open the order and choose Contact seller to discuss the problem and possible fixes.
- File a Return/refund request. Go to My orders, open the order detail and choose Return/refund. Give your reason, upload photos if needed and submit.
- Know who pays for a return. If you return an item because you changed your mind, AliExpress says you pay the return shipping.
- Use Free Return where it applies. AliExpress describes a Free Return service within 15 days of delivery: choose the items, pack them and use the return label. The refund follows once the items pass quality control at the warehouse.
- Use the Help Center. AliExpress runs a Help Center on its website and in the app for questions the seller cannot solve.
Keep payment and messages inside the AliExpress order, so there is a full record if you need to file a request.
AliExpress reviews on BBB, Trustpilot and app stores
Review sites like the Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot often attract people who had a problem, while app store ratings come from a much wider group of shoppers, so read both. Profiles and scores on these sites change as reviews come in and complaints are answered, so look up the current AliExpress profile on each site yourself.
When you read reviews, look for patterns rather than single stories. The same complaint about the same type of product, repeated, tells you more than one angry post. Reviews on the product page itself, especially ones with buyer photos, are often the most useful of all, because they are about the exact listing you are about to buy.
Before you buy on AliExpress: a five-step check
- Compare the price. Look up the same or a similar item at Temu, SHEIN, Walmart or Target, and compare the full total at checkout.
- Read the listing closely. Buyer photos, measurements and the store's review history are more useful than the main image.
- Check the delivery window on the listing and on the order page, and decide whether it works for you.
- Go through ShopBack before you pay. Open the ShopBack AliExpress page, tap through to AliExpress and pay in the same session.
- Keep records. Screenshot the listing and keep the order messages until the item has arrived and you are happy with it.
How ShopBack lowers what you pay on AliExpress
ShopBack works like an automatic cash discount on your online order. AliExpress is a merchant on ShopBack US. You open the ShopBack AliExpress page, tap through, shop on AliExpress as normal and pay in the same session. Once the order is confirmed, cash comes back to your ShopBack account.
Cashback lowers what you actually pay for an order. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles. That is different from store coins or credit, which you can only spend with that store.
A worked example, with an illustrative rate only: on an $80 AliExpress order at an illustrative 5%, $4 comes back, so the effective price is $76. Check the live rate on the ShopBack AliExpress page, because rates and terms change and can differ by category.
The habit is the same across the big shopping and travel sites. For merchants like Booking.com, Trip.com, Agoda and Expedia, going through ShopBack is an essential step before you book or check out, so you pay less on the same booking or order. AliExpress works the same way.
A few things that keep tracking on track:
- Start from the ShopBack AliExpress page each time, and pay in the same session.
- Use coupons AliExpress gives you in your account, or codes listed on the ShopBack AliExpress page. Codes from other coupon sites can stop an order from tracking.
- Read the terms on the ShopBack AliExpress page for anything that does not qualify.
