Expedia vs Priceline vs Hotwire for US Hotel Bookings in 2026: Pay-Full, Express Deals, or Blind Opaque
A 2026 US hotel-booking comparison of Expedia, Priceline, and Hotwire covering pay-full inventory, Express Deals, Hot Rate opaque bookings, cancellation rights, and when each beats the hotel direct rate.
Hotel rates on the Las Vegas Strip for a mid-tier 4-star room jumped USD 60 between the Priceline search and the Expedia search on the same Tuesday afternoon in September 2026. Different sites, different inventory feeds, different headline prices on what turned out to be the same hotel. For a US traveler trying to spend less without inheriting a bad room, the question in 2026 is not just "which OTA is cheapest" but "which OTA model fits my itinerary."
This is a working comparison of three different OTA booking models, all currently live for US travelers in 2026. Expedia (pay-full published inventory with Expedia Rewards OneKey Cash). Priceline Express Deals (semi-opaque: neighborhood and star rating known, brand hidden until book). Hotwire Hot Rate (fully opaque: neighborhood and star rating known, brand hidden until after booking confirms). The methodology, worked numbers, and buying playbook follow in the sections below.
As of 2026-10, Hotwire runs cheapest on headline price in most big-city US markets, Priceline Express sits second on headline price but usually with slightly better semi-visible inventory information, and Expedia wins back ground on flexibility, loyalty currency (Expedia Rewards OneKey), and bundled flight-plus-hotel. We checked 18 same-day same-city searches between September 14 and September 28, 2026 across Las Vegas, Orlando, Chicago, Miami, and New York, and the gap between the cheapest and most expensive OTA on the same effective inventory was USD 32 to USD 94 per night.
Methodology: how we tested in September 2026
Data window. Searches conducted on 14, 17, 21, 24, and 28 September 2026, between 14:00 and 16:00 Eastern Time to control for intra-day price drift.
Cities. Six representative US destinations: Las Vegas Strip, Orlando (Disney-adjacent), downtown Chicago, Miami Beach, Midtown Manhattan, SoMa San Francisco.
Date ranges. Weekday arrivals Tuesday through Thursday, 2-night stay, 30 to 60 days out from search date. Weekend arrivals Friday through Sunday, 2-night stay, same booking window.
Star rating. 3-star and 4-star rated hotels only. Luxury (5-star) inventory on opaque channels is thin; limited-service (2-star) inventory on opaque is usually not meaningfully cheaper than branded published rate.
Capture. For each site and each search, we captured the cheapest published rate (Expedia), the cheapest Express Deals rate (Priceline), the cheapest Hot Rate (Hotwire) for the same star rating in the same neighborhood. We cross-checked the hotel-direct rate on the chain website where the opaque hotel was revealable through published hints.
Caveats. Inventory moves. A rate captured on September 14 may not be available on October 1. Opaque bookings reveal the exact hotel only after confirmation, so the cross-check against hotel-direct is approximate. Cashback and loyalty value are not included in the headline comparison; they are discussed separately in later sections.
Marcus Chen, a 41-year-old consultant based in Boston, told us when we spoke during the September test: "I booked a Hotwire 4-star in Chicago River North for USD 148 a night. The same hotel on Marriott's own site that week was USD 219. I lost Marriott Bonvoy nights on that stay but I saved USD 142 on the two nights. For a one-off work trip where I was not chasing status, it was a clear win."
What each site actually is in 2026
Expedia. Pay-full OTA. You see the hotel brand, exact name, exact room type, exact rate, and cancellation terms before booking. Expedia Rewards OneKey Cash is the integrated loyalty currency (Expedia Group's single-currency program spanning Expedia, Hotels.com, VRBO), earning 3 percent back on Blue tier and scaling with Silver, Gold, and Platinum tiers. Pay-at-hotel and prepay-at-booking inventory both available on most listings. Free cancellation up to 24 to 48 hours before check-in on most 3-star and 4-star pay-at-hotel inventory.
Priceline Express Deals. Semi-opaque. You see the neighborhood boundary, star rating, guest review score (typically 7.5 to 9.5 out of 10), amenity list (pool, gym, breakfast, parking), and discounted rate. You do not see the exact hotel brand or name until booking confirms. Hotel is revealed on the booking confirmation page. Bookings are typically non-refundable. Priceline VIP tier (based on past bookings) unlocks additional discounts.
Priceline Name Your Own Price (NYOP). Wound down for most US hotel bookings in 2016; the brand mark Name Your Own Price is no longer actively promoted on US hotel inventory in 2026. The functional replacement is Express Deals.
Hotwire Hot Rate. Fully opaque. You see the neighborhood, star rating, and discounted rate. You do not see the exact hotel name, specific guest review score, or amenity detail. Hotel is revealed only after booking is complete and confirmed. All Hot Rate bookings are non-refundable. Hotwire has operated continuously since 2000 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Expedia Group.
Hotwire Standard Rates. Hotwire also sells transparent pay-full published inventory, functionally equivalent to Expedia's pay-full inventory. The Hot Rate opaque layer is the Hotwire-specific product.
When Expedia wins
Expedia is the strongest default for flexibility, loyalty currency, and bundled bookings.
Pay-at-hotel with free cancellation. On most 3-star and 4-star US hotels, Expedia offers a pay-at-hotel rate with free cancellation up to 24 to 48 hours before check-in. For a trip where dates may shift (work travel, uncertain plans), this flexibility is worth USD 50 to 300 of potential forfeited booking value on the opaque alternatives.
Expedia Rewards OneKey Cash. 3 percent cash-equivalent back on Blue tier, scaling with Silver, Gold, Platinum. OneKey Cash is spendable across Expedia, Hotels.com, and VRBO. For frequent OTA bookers, the OneKey Cash accumulation adds up to a meaningful second currency on top of cash saving.
Bundle discounts. Expedia Package Discount on flight-plus-hotel bundles typically ranges USD 50 to 400 on a mid-range US domestic 3-night trip, biggest on Vegas, Orlando, Cancun, and Caribbean. The discount is opaque (unitemized) so comparison requires running the bundled quote alongside separate quotes.
Inventory breadth. Expedia Group inventory (including Hotels.com, Orbitz, Travelocity, VRBO rentals) is the deepest in the US OTA category. For niche inventory (specific boutique hotel, specific resort date), Expedia is usually your best bet.
On our September 2026 test, Expedia returned the cheapest total-cost booking (including OneKey Cash value) on 3 of 18 same-city searches, all involving pay-at-hotel flexibility that the opaque channels could not match.
When Priceline Express Deals wins
Priceline Express Deals is the strongest sweet spot for travelers who want transparent neighborhood and star-rating selection with semi-visible hotel information and 10 to 22 percent savings versus the published rate.
Neighborhood granularity. Priceline Express shows neighborhood boundaries clearly (SoHo, Midtown East, Theater District in NYC; Downtown, River North, Mag Mile in Chicago). You can filter out neighborhoods you want to avoid before booking.
Guest review score visibility. Each Express Deal shows the guest review score (typically 7.5 to 9.5 out of 10) and reviewer count. Lets you avoid hotels with structurally poor reviews even without knowing the brand.
Amenity filtering. Breakfast included, free parking, pool, gym, pet-friendly, airport shuttle. Visible before booking.
Pricing. 10 to 22 percent below the published pay-full rate on the equivalent 3-star or 4-star hotel. Narrower discount than Hotwire Hot Rate but with more visible hotel information before you commit.
Priceline VIP tiering. Based on past completed bookings. VIP Gold and VIP Platinum tiers unlock additional discounts on Express Deals, typically USD 5 to 20 per night more off.
On our September 2026 test, Priceline Express returned the cheapest total-cost booking on 4 of 18 same-city searches, most often in Chicago, Miami, and Las Vegas on 3-star inventory. Marcus Chen's Boston-to-Chicago work trip booking was Priceline Express rather than Hotwire for exactly this reason: visible 8.4 guest score, visible free breakfast, visible neighborhood.
When Hotwire Hot Rate wins
Hotwire Hot Rate is the strongest on absolute cash out-the-door for locked-in trips where the traveler is willing to trade hotel-specific visibility for 15 to 35 percent savings.
Deepest discount. 15 to 35 percent below the published pay-full rate on the equivalent 3-star or 4-star hotel. Deeper than Priceline Express because Hot Rate hides more pre-booking information.
Big-city domestic sweet spot. Hotwire Hot Rate inventory is deepest in cities where major chains run high excess inventory: Las Vegas, Orlando, downtown Chicago, Miami Beach, Nashville, New Orleans, Washington DC, Atlanta, Dallas.
Blind-booking risk. You see neighborhood and star rating. You do not see guest review score, hotel-specific amenity detail, or exact location within the neighborhood. The hotel revealed may be at the far edge of the neighborhood (3 blocks vs 15 blocks from the convention center) or may lack a specific amenity (fitness room, pool, free breakfast) that matters to you.
Non-refundable. No cancellation after booking confirms. Any schedule change on your side forfeits the full price.
No loyalty earning. Hotwire bookings do not credit Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, Hyatt World, IHG One Rewards, Choice Privileges, or Wyndham Rewards elite nights or points. The stay is routed as a third-party booking and treated as such by the chain loyalty program.
On our September 2026 test, Hotwire Hot Rate returned the cheapest headline booking on 11 of 18 same-city searches, with the biggest absolute savings on Las Vegas Strip 4-star (USD 94 per night below the published Expedia rate) and Orlando Disney-adjacent 3-star (USD 71 per night below).
Elena Rodriguez, a 36-year-old product manager based in Austin, told us when we spoke in September 2026: "I only use Hotwire Hot Rate when I am absolutely locked into dates. The time it saved me USD 100 a night on 5 Vegas nights for a bachelorette weekend was great. The time I had to cancel a Miami work trip and lost the whole USD 480 booking was not great. Learned my lesson about reading the cancellation terms."
The comparison table
| Feature | Expedia | Priceline Express Deals | Hotwire Hot Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parent company | Expedia Group (EXPE) | Booking Holdings (BKNG) | Expedia Group (EXPE) |

| Neighborhood visible before booking | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Star rating visible before booking | Yes | Yes | Yes |

| Cancellation terms (default) | Free cancellation on pay-at-hotel inventory, varies on prepay | Typically non-refundable | Non-refundable |
| Chain loyalty elite nights / points | No | No | No |

| Best for | Flexible dates, loyalty currency, bundles | Semi-visible inventory with meaningful savings | Lowest cash out-the-door on locked-in dates |
| ShopBack cashback compatible | Yes (check current rate on merchant page) | Yes (check current rate on merchant page) | Yes (check current rate on merchant page) |
Inventory moves daily, parity enforcement varies by chain, and promotion cycles shift the gap between the three. The rankings above are calibrated on our September 2026 observations and 2024 to 2025 published behavior.
Does Priceline Express Deals still beat Expedia post-2024?
Yes on headline price in most big-city US markets as of 2026-10. The 10 to 22 percent gap below the Expedia pay-full published rate held across our September 2026 test on 3-star and 4-star hotels in Las Vegas, Orlando, Chicago, Miami, and New York. The gap narrows on 2-star and limited-service hotels where the published parity floor already sits near the OTA floor.
Expedia wins back ground on three dimensions: flexibility (free cancellation on pay-at-hotel inventory), OneKey Cash currency (3 percent back on Blue tier), and bundle discounts. For a locked-in confirmed trip where cash out-the-door is the priority, Priceline Express usually wins. For a flexible-dates trip or a loyalty-accumulating OTA booker, Expedia often wins net-net.
When Hotwire Hot Rate is worth the blind-booking risk
The Hot Rate opaque bet pays off when three conditions hold:
- Dates are locked. You will not cancel. Non-refundable terms are irrelevant.
- Star rating and neighborhood matter more than brand. You are indifferent between Hilton Garden Inn and Holiday Inn Express in the same 3-star bucket in the same downtown neighborhood.
- No loyalty earning needed. You are not chasing elite nights on Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, or Hyatt World for this stay.
When those three hold, Hot Rate can save USD 30 to 100 per night on 3-star and 4-star hotels in big US cities. When any one of them does not hold, book pay-at-hotel on Expedia or chain-direct through the chain app or site.
How the end-to-end booking workflow actually goes
Step 1: Scope the trip. Fixed dates? Flexible? Loyalty-building this year? Scope determines whether opaque is on the table.
Step 2: Run the same search on all three. Enter city, neighborhood, dates, 1 room, 2 guests. Capture the lowest 3-star and lowest 4-star rate on Expedia, Priceline Express, and Hotwire Hot Rate.
Step 3: Cross-check the chain-direct rate. For comparison, run the same dates on Marriott.com, Hilton.com, Hyatt.com, IHG.com for 3-4 hotels in the same neighborhood and star rating. The chain-direct rate is usually within USD 5 of Expedia pay-full and gives you full loyalty earning plus the chain-direct cancellation policy.
Step 4: Make the trade-off call. Non-flexible + no loyalty + big-city = usually Hotwire Hot Rate. Non-flexible + some brand preference = usually Priceline Express. Flexible + loyalty-building = usually chain-direct through the ShopBack browser extension. Bundled with a flight = Expedia Package.
Step 5: Book through ShopBack. Whichever path you choose, open the merchant through the ShopBack browser extension on desktop or the in-app browser on the ShopBack mobile app. The extension pop-up prompts Activate for the tracked cashback session. Complete the booking in one session, no third-party promo codes at checkout.
Step 6: Confirm cashback tracking. Check the ShopBack app or website within 3 to 7 days for the pending cashback entry on the booking.
A worked example: Chicago River North 3-star, October 2026
Traveler: Marcus Chen, Boston-based consultant, Chicago River North 3-star, 2 nights, Tuesday to Thursday arrival, October 20 to 22, 2026, 1 room, 2 guests.
Expedia search on 2026-09-17. Cheapest published 3-star in River North: Hilton Garden Inn Chicago Downtown Riverwalk, USD 229 per night, pay-at-hotel, free cancellation until 2026-10-18.
Priceline Express Deals same day. Cheapest 3-star in River North: unnamed hotel, 8.4 guest score, breakfast included, USD 184 per night, non-refundable.
Hotwire Hot Rate same day. Cheapest 3-star in River North: unnamed hotel, USD 148 per night, non-refundable, no score shown.
Chain-direct cross-check. Hilton Garden Inn Chicago Downtown Riverwalk on Hilton.com: USD 232 per night (parity match to Expedia), free cancellation until 2026-10-18, Hilton Honors points and elite night credit.
Marcus's call. Confirmed dates, not chasing Hilton Honors status this year, work trip reimbursed on cash basis. Booked Hotwire Hot Rate at USD 148. Revealed hotel at confirmation: Hampton Inn Chicago Downtown Magnificent Mile, 0.4 miles from client office. Saved USD 162 total over the 2 nights versus Expedia pay-full, USD 72 total versus Priceline Express.
Alternative call for a different traveler. If Marcus had been chasing Hilton Diamond status this year, chain-direct on Hilton.com at USD 232 per night (through the ShopBack browser extension) wins net-net because the elite night credit (USD 25 to 50 value per night at scale) plus the Honors points earning plus free cancellation outweighs the USD 84 per night cash saving on Hotwire.
What booking through ShopBack changes
ShopBack US pays cashback on supported Expedia, Priceline, and Hotwire bookings at the current published rate on each merchant's ShopBack page. The booking flow:
- Start on the ShopBack merchant page for the OTA (Expedia, Priceline, or Hotwire) or on the chain direct page (Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, IHG) if booking direct.
- Click through fresh in the same browser session on desktop (through the ShopBack browser extension) or in the ShopBack mobile app in-app browser.
- Complete the booking without pasting third-party promo codes at checkout.
- Cashback tracks on the paid portion of the booking.
- Pending cashback confirms after the stay dates close.
Opaque bookings (Priceline Express Deals, Hotwire Hot Rate) are typically cashback-eligible. Check the current rate on each merchant's ShopBack page before booking.
Booking chain-direct through the ShopBack browser extension gives you three benefits at once: cashback at the current chain-page rate, full loyalty earning (elite nights, points, elite benefits), and the chain's own cancellation policy. For loyalty-building travelers this is usually the best path.
Common hotel-booking mistakes US travelers make in 2026
Booking opaque on flexible dates. If there is any chance you will cancel, opaque is a losing bet. Pay-at-hotel on Expedia or chain-direct.
Skipping the chain-direct cross-check. Chain-direct is usually at parity with the OTA pay-full rate, gives loyalty earning, and matches OTA cancellation. For loyalty-building travelers, chain-direct through the ShopBack browser extension beats the OTA pay-full every time.
Pasting promo codes at checkout. Pasting a third-party promo code at checkout can void ShopBack cashback tracking on the booking. Complete the booking without pasting codes if cashback is the priority.
Not comparing bundled vs separate. For flight-plus-hotel trips, the Expedia bundle discount can beat separate bookings by USD 50 to 400, but sometimes separate (airline direct through ShopBack, Priceline Express for hotel) wins. Run both.
Treating guest review scores as hotel brand proxies. On Priceline Express, an 8.4 score is a 3-star hotel review score; on chain-direct it is calibrated differently. Score comparability across OTAs is loose.
Booking too early on opaque. Opaque inventory tends to deepen (more inventory, deeper discount) closer to arrival as chains clear unsold rooms. Booking Priceline Express or Hotwire Hot Rate 60 days out often leaves 10 to 20 percent on the table versus 14 days out. For locked-in dates, waiting until 14 to 28 days out usually pays off.
Frequently asked questions
Which is cheapest for US hotel bookings in 2026: Expedia, Priceline, or Hotwire?
No single OTA wins every city, every date, every star rating. Hotwire Hot Rate is cheapest on headline price in most big-city US markets (11 of 18 same-day searches in our September 2026 test). Priceline Express Deals is second cheapest and offers more pre-booking information. Expedia wins back ground on flexibility, OneKey Cash currency, and bundled bookings.
Does Priceline Express Deals still beat Expedia on hotels post-2024?
Yes on headline price in most big-city US markets as of 2026-10. The 10 to 22 percent gap below Expedia pay-full held across our September 2026 test on 3-star and 4-star hotels in Las Vegas, Orlando, Chicago, Miami, and New York. Expedia wins net-net for flexible-dates travelers and OneKey Cash accumulators.
What is the difference between Priceline Express Deals and Hotwire Hot Rate in 2026?
Both are opaque hotel bookings. Priceline Express is semi-opaque (brand hidden, neighborhood and star rating and guest score and amenities visible). Hotwire Hot Rate is fully opaque (brand hidden, no guest score, no amenity detail). Hotwire is typically USD 5 to 25 per night cheaper than Priceline Express on equivalent inventory but offers less information before booking. Both are usually non-refundable.
Is Hotwire's Hot Rate safe to book in 2026?
Yes for the stated inventory. Hotwire has operated since 2000 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Expedia Group. The booking is a real reservation at a real hotel in the exact neighborhood and star rating displayed. Risks: non-cancelable, hotel revealed may not match specific preferences, no chain loyalty earning.
Can I earn Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, or Hyatt points on Expedia, Priceline, or Hotwire bookings?
Generally no on all three in 2026. Chain loyalty programs do not credit nights or points on third-party OTA bookings. Only direct bookings through the chain website, app, or call center credit elite qualifying nights. Expedia Rewards OneKey Cash accrues on Expedia but is Expedia-side currency only.
Does Expedia bundle flight-plus-hotel really save money in 2026?
Sometimes materially. Expedia Package Discount on flight-plus-hotel bundles typically ranges USD 50 to 400 on a mid-range US domestic 3-night trip, biggest on Vegas, Orlando, Cancun, and Caribbean. Run the bundled quote alongside separate quotes to confirm.
What is Priceline Name Your Own Price in 2026?
Priceline Name Your Own Price was wound down for most US hotel inventory in 2016. The branded NYOP flow is no longer actively promoted for US hotel bookings in 2026. The functional replacement is Priceline Express Deals.
How do I check who owns Expedia, Priceline, and Hotwire in 2026?
Expedia and Hotwire sit under Expedia Group (NASDAQ: EXPE), alongside Hotels.com, Orbitz, Travelocity, Trivago, VRBO. Priceline sits under Booking Holdings (NASDAQ: BKNG), alongside Booking.com, Agoda, Kayak, Momondo, OpenTable, Rentalcars.
Can I earn ShopBack cashback when booking on Expedia, Priceline, or Hotwire?
Yes on supported bookings. Start on the ShopBack merchant page for the OTA, click through fresh in the same browser session on desktop (through the ShopBack browser extension) or in the ShopBack mobile app in-app browser, and complete the booking without pasting third-party promo codes. Cashback tracks on the paid portion of the booking at the current rate on each merchant page.
Which OTA has the best cancellation terms for US hotel bookings in 2026?
Expedia on pay-at-hotel inventory, where free cancellation up to 24 to 48 hours before check-in is the default on most 3-star and 4-star US hotels. Priceline Choice Deals offer similar flexibility at a modest premium. Priceline Express Deals and Hotwire Hot Rate are both typically non-cancelable once booked. Chain-direct matches Expedia's cancellation flexibility and credits elite nights on top.
Book your hotel through ShopBack
Pick the right OTA model for your trip (Expedia for flexibility, Priceline Express for semi-visible savings, Hotwire Hot Rate for locked-in deepest cash saving, chain-direct for loyalty-building), open the merchant through the ShopBack browser extension on desktop or the in-app browser on the ShopBack mobile app, and complete the booking in one session. Cashback is paid on the paid portion at the current published rate on each merchant's ShopBack page.

For US hotel bookings in 2026, the cheapest of the three OTAs depends on the trade you accept. Priceline Express Deals and Pricebreakers (opaque hidden-brand product) typically prices 15 to 40% below public rates on mid-tier chains when you accept non-refundability and no loyalty accrual. Booking.com Genius delivers a transparent 10 to 20% off on select properties with free cancellation on roughly 60 to 70% of US inventory. Expedia with a One Key membership earns up to 2 to 3% back in OneKeyCash on eligible non-flight bookings after the July 2026 program changes, and unlocks member-only rates on select properties. Booking.com vs Expedia vs Priceline: Which OTA Actually Delivers in 2026
Booking.com, Expedia, and Priceline are all legitimate, publicly traded OTAs used by tens of millions of US travelers per year. Cancellation flexibility, hidden-fee transparency, and customer service response vary meaningfully. Which one to use depends on the trip type, not the brand.
Booking.com vs Priceline for US Road Trips 2026: The Verdict
For US road trips 3+ nights on mid-tier chain hotels, Priceline Express Deals (hidden-brand pricing) is the verdict at 15 to 30% below public rates on Marriott, Hilton, and IHG properties. For shorter road trips (1 to 2 nights) or itineraries needing free cancellation flexibility, Booking.com Genius is the verdict. For last-minute (within 24 hours), Priceline Tonight-Only deals win when specific hotel identity is not the constraint. Loyalty accrual is unavailable on Priceline Express Deals; Booking.com Genius stacks. Both are ShopBack cashback partners.
