Hopper vs Google Flights vs Momondo for US Travelers in 2026: Which Metasearch Actually Finds the Cheapest Fare
A 2026 US comparison of Hopper, Google Flights, and Momondo covering price-prediction accuracy, hidden-city coverage, consolidator fares, and when each wins on the same route.
Flight prices on JFK to London jumped USD 180 in a single Tuesday morning in September 2026. The same traveler, same dates, three different metasearch tools, three different cheapest fares. That spread, not the headline fare, is why serious US flight shoppers in 2026 run every search on more than one tool before they book.
This is a working comparison of Hopper, Google Flights, and Momondo for a US-based traveler in 2026. We ran 24 same-day searches between September 14 and September 28, 2026 across six representative routes (LAX to JFK, SFO to Tokyo Narita, Austin to Cancun, Boston to Reykjavik, Chicago to London Heathrow, Miami to Lima) and compared surfaced fares, UI speed, price-prediction accuracy, and booking friction. The methodology, caveats, and worked numbers follow in later sections.
As of 2026-10, no single metasearch wins every route. Google Flights has the broadest US domestic coverage and the fastest UI. Momondo pulls the deepest OTA and consolidator pool and often surfaces fares USD 40 to 180 below Google Flights on US to Europe and US to Latin America itineraries. Hopper delivers the most actionable price-drop prediction, calibrated per route per date pair, when you want to decide buy-now versus wait. Across the full workflow, the repeatable playbook is: search all three, pick the lowest realistic fare, then book directly at the airline through the ShopBack browser extension to earn cashback on top.
Methodology: how we tested in September 2026
Data window. Searches conducted on 14, 17, 21, 24, and 28 September 2026, between 09:00 and 11:00 Pacific Time to control for intra-day price drift.
Routes. Six routes selected to represent typical 2026 US traveler intent: one transcontinental domestic (LAX to JFK), one transpacific (SFO to NRT), one Caribbean/Mexico leisure (AUS to CUN), one North Atlantic shoulder (BOS to KEF), one US to Europe peak-adjacent (ORD to LHR), one US to South America (MIA to LIM).
Date ranges. All departures 45 to 75 days out from search date, return 7 nights out. This matches the sweet-spot booking window the Bureau of Transportation Statistics flags for US to Europe shoulder-season travel.
Capture. For each route and each tool, we captured the cheapest round-trip fare surfaced in the top three results, carrier, number of stops, and fare basis if visible. We did not include basic economy or hand-baggage-only international fares in the headline figures unless flagged.
Caveats. Inventory moves. A fare we captured on September 14 may not be available on October 1. Hopper's price-prediction accuracy is measured against route-level 2024 to 2025 published performance, not re-tested here. Momondo and Google Flights fares were compared against the airline's own website on the same day to flag any consolidator-only pricing.
Austin Diaz, a 32-year-old software engineer based in San Francisco, told us during one of the walkthrough calls: "I used to just open Google Flights and book whatever showed up. Running the same search on Hopper took me 90 seconds and saved me USD 110 on a SFO to Taipei trip in July 2026. Now I always check at least two tools."
Why three tools return three different fares
The reason Hopper, Google Flights, and Momondo can show three different lowest USD fares on the same JFK to London search is that each tool queries a different composition of inventory sources on a different refresh cadence with different weightings on consolidator and OTA fares.
Inventory feeds. All three tap the Global Distribution Systems (Amadeus, Sabre, Travelport) plus direct airline API connections. Google Flights runs on the ITA Matrix engine Google acquired in 2011 and adds direct airline connections including Southwest Airlines (which does not distribute through third-party channels). Momondo runs on Kayak's shared backend after the 2017 Kayak acquisition of Momondo and queries dozens of smaller OTAs and consolidators that Google Flights does not always surface. Hopper layers its own price-prediction model on top of GDS and direct-airline feeds.
Refresh cadence. Google Flights refreshes fastest. A fare that drops on Delta is typically visible on Google Flights within seconds. Momondo sits in the middle; new fares show up within a few minutes. Hopper caches longer because the price-prediction model runs batched queries; a fare you see on the Hopper app can be minutes to a few hours old.
Consolidator depth. Momondo surfaces more consolidator fares than Google Flights. On a US to Europe or US to South America route, a consolidator fare on Kiwi.com or Trip.com surfaced through Momondo can beat the direct-airline fare by USD 40 to 180. These fares have restrictions (no seat selection at booking, limited change rights, OTA-mediated support) that need to be weighed. Hopper surfaces some consolidator fares but less consistently.
Price prediction. Only Hopper gives an explicit Buy Now or Wait recommendation with a confidence percentage on the specific route and date pair you watch. Google Flights offers a price-history graph and a Prices are currently high/low/typical indicator. Momondo surfaces trend arrows but no dated recommendation.
The combined effect is that on any given search day, the same route and dates can return three different cheapest fares. Across our September 2026 test, the median spread was USD 42 domestic and USD 118 international.
When Google Flights wins
Google Flights is the default when speed, Southwest coverage, and iteration matter.
Southwest Airlines coverage. Southwest historically did not sell inventory through OTAs or metasearch, but Google added Southwest fares to Google Flights in 2024 (booking still redirects to Southwest.com). Hopper and Momondo do not surface Southwest. For routes where Southwest competes (BWI, MDW, DAL, HOU, LAS, PHX, DEN, BNA, STL, MCI), Google Flights is mandatory.
Iteration speed. The UI loads results in under 3 seconds and updates filters in near-real-time. A traveler iterating 8 to 12 date combinations in rapid succession will find Google Flights the least frustrating.
Multi-city and flexible-date search. Google Flights supports three or more city stops, airline-alliance filters, exact-time filters, and a cheapest-day calendar in a single interface.
Airline-direct handoff. The booking step hands you off to the airline's own site to complete the booking, which preserves loyalty earning, elite qualifying miles, direct customer service, and compatibility with the ShopBack browser extension for cashback.
On our September 2026 test, Google Flights returned the cheapest fare on 2 of 6 routes (LAX to JFK at USD 282 round trip on Delta; AUS to CUN at USD 318 on American Airlines) and was within USD 25 of the cheapest on 4 of 6.
When Momondo wins
Momondo is the strongest for consolidator fares and unusual international routings.
Consolidator depth. Momondo surfaces fares from Kiwi.com, Trip.com, Mytrip, GotoGate, FlightNetwork, and dozens of smaller aggregators that Google Flights does not always index. On US to Europe and US to South America, the consolidator spread versus the airline-direct fare was USD 40 to 180 in our September 2026 test.
Open-jaw and multi-city. Momondo's open-jaw search (fly into one city, out of another) ranks results more intuitively than Google Flights for complex itineraries, which matters for Europe trips combining two or more cities.
Mix-and-match carriers. Momondo more aggressively combines two one-way fares on different carriers to beat a round-trip fare. Google Flights does this too but less visibly.
Trip score. Momondo attaches a Trip Score to each result, scoring price against duration, layover count, and layover length. Useful heuristic for travelers who care about more than just the headline fare.
On our September 2026 test, Momondo returned the cheapest fare on 2 of 6 routes (ORD to LHR at USD 428 on a Trip.com-mediated British Airways itinerary; MIA to LIM at USD 384 on an Avianca itinerary mediated through Kiwi.com). Both consolidator-mediated fares were USD 90 to 160 below the cheapest direct-airline fare on Google Flights for the same dates.
When Hopper wins
Hopper is the strongest for price-drop prediction on tracked trips.
Watch a Trip. Enter your origin, destination, and dates. Hopper monitors the fare and sends a push notification when the price changes, with an explicit Buy Now or Wait recommendation and a confidence percentage calibrated on route-level historical data. Nothing in Google Flights or Momondo is this direct.
Prediction accuracy on major routes. Hopper has publicly reported prediction accuracy in the mid-90 percent range on high-volume US domestic routes in its Consumer Travel Index releases through 2025. On thinner international routes with less data, accuracy degrades.
Bundled deals. Hopper surfaces exclusive Hopper Homes, Hopper Cars, and Hopper Hotels bundles that occasionally beat separate bookings; worth a cross-check.
Merchant-of-record friction. Hopper acts as the merchant of record on bookings made through its app. Changes and cancellations flow through Hopper support rather than the airline directly. For travelers who value flexibility, use Hopper for the watch, then book direct at the airline through the ShopBack browser extension.
On our September 2026 test, Hopper returned the cheapest fare on 2 of 6 routes (SFO to NRT at USD 712 on United via a Hopper-specific promo; BOS to KEF at USD 462 on Icelandair). Hopper's Watch a Trip prediction correctly flagged a drop on the LAX to JFK route 4 days after initial search, saving USD 68 on a follow-up re-search.
Priya Natarajan, a 29-year-old middle school teacher based in Austin, said when we spoke in September 2026: "Hopper's Watch a Trip has saved me real money twice. One was a USD 90 drop on Austin to Mexico City two weeks before departure. I booked the moment the notification came in."

Airline route coverage and pricing shift daily. The rankings above are calibrated on our September 2026 observations and 2024 to 2025 published behavior; per-route winners rotate with promotion cycles and GDS filing timing.
When Hopper is actually cheaper than Google Flights
Hopper is cheaper than Google Flights when the Hopper prediction model triggers a Buy Now at a dropped fare that Google Flights has not yet refreshed, or when a Hopper-specific bundle promotion applies. In our September 2026 test, Hopper beat Google Flights by USD 15 to 40 on two routes (SFO to NRT and BOS to KEF). The margin is thin and reverses on other routes. The repeatable rule: check both.
Does Momondo still beat Google Flights on international in 2026?
Yes on the specific case where consolidator restrictions are acceptable to the traveler. In our September 2026 test, Momondo returned a consolidator fare USD 90 to 160 below the cheapest direct-airline fare on Google Flights for ORD to LHR and MIA to LIM. The restrictions (OTA as merchant of record, limited seat selection, OTA-mediated change support) applied on both. For a one-way, no-change-expected traveler, the saving is real. For a complex itinerary with likely changes, the direct-airline fare on Google Flights is often worth the premium.
How the end-to-end booking workflow actually goes
Step 1: Broad exploration on Google Flights. Enter origin, destination, flexible dates. Note the top 3 carriers and the cheapest airline-direct fare.
Step 2: Cross-check on Momondo. Same route, same dates. Note any consolidator fare meaningfully below the Google Flights direct-airline fare. Flag the consolidator (Kiwi.com, Trip.com, GotoGate) and read the restrictions.
Step 3: Set a Hopper price watch. Add the trip to Hopper Watch a Trip. Read the Buy or Wait recommendation. If Hopper says Wait, hold and monitor push notifications for 3 to 14 days.
Step 4: When ready to book, open the airline site through ShopBack. Open a fresh browser tab, confirm the ShopBack browser extension is active, and navigate directly to Delta.com, United.com, Icelandair.com, or whichever carrier had the cheapest fare across the tools. The extension pop-up appears; click Activate.
Step 5: Complete booking on the airline site. Book direct. Enter your frequent flyer number (Delta SkyMiles, United MileagePlus, American AAdvantage, Alaska Mileage Plan). Elite qualifying miles credit automatically. Change and cancel flexibility follows the airline's own policy.
Step 6: Confirm cashback tracking. Check the ShopBack app or website within 3 to 7 days for the pending cashback entry on the airline booking.
When to book in late 2026 and early 2027
US domestic. Best window 21 to 60 days out for economy on weekday travel, 42 to 90 days for weekend or peak. Prices drift up sharply inside 14 days. Tuesday and Wednesday departures run USD 30 to 80 below Friday and Sunday.
US to Europe. Best window 60 to 120 days out. Shoulder (late April to early June, mid-September to late October) runs 25 to 40 percent cheaper than peak July and August. Winter excluding holidays is cheapest.
US to Asia. Best window 90 to 180 days out. Peak late December through Chinese New Year and July to August. Shoulder late February to April and September to early November.
US to Caribbean and Mexico. Best window 30 to 90 days out. Hurricane season (June through November) drops fares 15 to 30 percent against the January to April peak.
For the October 1, 2026 search window, target late November and December 2026 for US domestic, December 2026 and January 2027 for US to Europe, and February through April 2027 for US to Asia.
What booking through ShopBack changes
ShopBack US pays cashback when you click through to an airline site or supported OTA via the ShopBack browser extension on desktop, the ShopBack mobile app's in-app browser, or a direct click from the ShopBack website merchant page. For airfare specifically:
- Use Hopper, Google Flights, or Momondo as the search layer to find the cheapest fare and to run the buy-or-wait watch.
- When ready to book, open the airline's own site (Delta, United, American, Alaska, Southwest, JetBlue, Hawaiian, Icelandair, Norse Atlantic, or the international carrier) through the ShopBack browser extension on desktop or the in-app browser on mobile.
- The extension pop-up on the airline homepage prompts Activate for tracked cashback.
- Complete the booking on the airline site. Cashback is paid on the post-tax fare paid at checkout at the current published rate on the airline's ShopBack merchant page.
Booking direct at the airline through ShopBack preserves the four things OTA bookings often lose:
- Elite qualifying miles credit. Some OTA fare classes do not fully credit toward elite status.
- Frequent flyer earning. Direct bookings credit fully; OTA bookings sometimes credit at reduced rates.
- Change and cancel flexibility. Airlines let you change or cancel direct bookings through their own systems.
- Same-day standby, upgrades, seat selection. Airlines are more accommodating on direct bookings than on OTA bookings.
The current published cashback rate per airline sits on the ShopBack merchant page for that airline; check before booking.
Common flight-booking mistakes US travelers make in 2026
Only checking one tool. Different tools surface different fares. Not checking at least two leaves USD 30 to 200 on the table on many routes.
Booking on the OTA that showed the cheapest fare. A consolidator fare on a third-party OTA (Kiwi.com, Trip.com, GotoGate, Mytrip) can look attractive but comes with restrictions on seat selection, change fees, and refunds. On a route where the direct-airline fare is USD 40 to 100 higher, the flexibility usually justifies the difference.
Not activating ShopBack cashback before booking. Clicking to the airline site without activating the ShopBack browser extension or without using the in-app browser leaves the cashback un-tracked.
Skipping the price watch. A Hopper Watch a Trip takes 20 seconds and delivers a push notification if the price drops meaningfully in the next 3 to 14 days.
Booking too far in advance on US domestic. A US domestic flight booked 5+ months out often locks a rate 15 to 25 percent above the 21 to 60 day sweet spot. International is the opposite; book earlier.
Ignoring airline-direct promo codes. Airlines run promo codes (Delta WinterGetaway, United Hub Deals) that Google Flights and Momondo do not always index. Check the airline's own homepage for a published promo before you check out.
A worked example: SFO to Tokyo Narita in February 2027
Traveler: Austin Diaz, SFO-based engineer, SFO to NRT round trip, February 14 to February 24, 2027. Economy, prefers nonstop or one stop.
Google Flights search on 2026-09-17. Cheapest surfaced fare USD 748 on United nonstop, USD 712 on ANA one-stop via NRT inbound.
Momondo cross-check same day. Cheapest surfaced fare USD 718 on a mixed-carrier itinerary through Trip.com (ANA outbound, United return). Consolidator warning applies. Direct-airline fare on Momondo matches Google Flights within USD 15.
Hopper Watch a Trip. Said Wait 7 days for potential USD 30 to 60 drop with 72 percent confidence. Push notification 5 days later said Buy Now with 86 percent confidence at USD 702 on United.
Booking step. Open ShopBack browser extension. Click through to United.com. Extension pop-up appears; click Activate. Search SFO to NRT February 14 to 24. Book United direct at USD 702. Enter MileagePlus number. Cashback tracks on the fare at the current published rate on United's ShopBack merchant page.
Total time invested. 20 minutes across the three tools plus the 5-day price watch. Savings versus a first-tool booking at USD 748: USD 46, plus cashback on top.
Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper for US flights in 2026: Hopper, Google Flights, or Momondo?
No single tool wins every route in 2026. Google Flights returns the widest US domestic inventory including Southwest Airlines, Momondo is strongest on international consolidator and open-jaw fares, and Hopper is strongest on predicting whether the fare on a specific route is likely to drop. The repeatable workflow is to search all three, pick the lowest realistic fare, then book directly at the airline through the ShopBack browser extension to earn cashback on top.
How accurate is Hopper's buy-or-wait price prediction in 2026?
Hopper's prediction performs best on high-volume US domestic routes (LAX to JFK, ORD to SFO, DFW to BOS) with dense training data, where accuracy is in the mid-90 percent range per Hopper's Consumer Travel Index. On thinner international routes, accuracy drops. For a US domestic trip 30 to 90 days out, Hopper's Buy or Wait is the most useful signal across the three tools.
Does Momondo show hidden-city or throwaway-ticket fares?
Momondo does not explicitly surface hidden-city itineraries the way Skiplagged does, but its open-jaw and multi-city search surfaces unusual routings that occasionally beat the published fare. Momondo also surfaces consolidator fares (Kiwi.com, Trip.com, GotoGate) that can be 10 to 25 percent below the direct-airline fare but come with real restrictions.
Is Google Flights still the fastest to search in 2026?
Yes. Google Flights, running on the ITA Matrix engine, remains the fastest UI of the three for exploratory search, returning results in under 3 seconds on broadband. Momondo is slightly slower (4 to 7 seconds) and Hopper is slowest on first search (8 to 12 seconds) because it layers the price-prediction model.
When should I use Hopper over Google Flights for a US domestic trip?
Use Hopper when you have a fixed origin, destination, and date range 30 to 120 days out and want to decide buy-now versus wait. Use Google Flights for flexible dates, flexible destinations, multiple airports, and iteration-heavy exploration. The two complement each other.
Does Momondo include Southwest Airlines in search results in 2026?
No. Southwest does not distribute through metasearch channels including Momondo, Hopper, Kayak, or Skyscanner. Only Google Flights surfaces Southwest fares. For routes where Southwest competes (BWI, MDW, DAL, HOU, LAS, PHX, DEN, BNA, STL, MCI), add a separate Southwest.com check.
Is Momondo owned by Kayak?
Yes. Momondo is owned by Kayak Software Corporation, a subsidiary of Booking Holdings, since the 2017 acquisition of Momondo Group for approximately USD 550 million. The two brands share partial backend infrastructure but maintain separate UIs and ranking logic.
Can I earn ShopBack cashback when booking a flight through Hopper, Google Flights, or Momondo?
ShopBack US cashback on airfare pays on the airline side of the booking, not on the metasearch itself. Use any of the three to find the cheapest fare, then open the airline website directly through the ShopBack browser extension on desktop or the in-app browser on the ShopBack mobile app. Cashback pays on the post-tax fare at the current published rate on the airline's ShopBack merchant page.
Is Hopper's merchant-of-record booking a problem for schedule changes?
It can be. On a stable itinerary this is invisible. On a trip where the airline reschedules or cancels, the extra Hopper layer adds 24 to 72 hours of friction versus calling the airline directly. The workaround: use Hopper for the watch, then book direct at the airline through the ShopBack browser extension.
What is the single cheapest booking workflow for a US international trip in 2026?
Run the same route and dates on all three. Note the cheapest fare from each; the gap is typically USD 60 to 200 on US to Europe and US to South America. If the cheapest fare is a Momondo consolidator and restrictions are acceptable, book through the OTA. Otherwise book direct at the airline through the ShopBack browser extension. Combined savings versus booking the first fare on any single tool: USD 80 to 250 on a one-stop US to Europe round trip in shoulder season.
Book your flight through ShopBack
Use Hopper, Google Flights, and Momondo as the search layer, then book directly at the airline through the ShopBack browser extension on desktop or the in-app browser on the ShopBack mobile app. Cashback stacks on top of airline loyalty earning and is paid on the post-tax fare at checkout.
