What is AirAsia?
AirAsia is Malaysia's largest low-cost airline group and the biggest LCC in Southeast Asia, headquartered in Kuala Lumpur under parent Capital A Berhad. The group operates AirAsia (Malaysia), AirAsia Indonesia, AirAsia Philippines, AirAsia Thailand, and AirAsia X (medium-haul). AirAsia serves 130+ destinations across ASEAN, North Asia (Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan), South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal), the Middle East, and Australia. US travellers primarily use AirAsia for intra-Asia connections after arriving on a long-haul carrier into KUL, SIN, BKK, HKT, DPS, MNL, or CGK. Book via airasia.com or the AirAsia MOVE app and activate ShopBack via the ShopBack AirAsia merchant page to earn cashback on eligible bookings at the current published rate.
How does AirAsia BIG Loyalty work?
AirAsia's loyalty programme, BIG Loyalty (rebranded to AirAsia Rewards under the AirAsia MOVE ecosystem), lets members earn AirAsia Points on eligible flights, hotels, food delivery, and select shopping partners across the AirAsia MOVE app. Points redeem against future AirAsia flights, add-ons (baggage, seat, meal), hotel stays through AirAsia MOVE, and select non-flight products. Elite tiers include Red (base), Gold, and Platinum, with Gold and Platinum unlocking priority check-in and boarding, extra baggage allowance, and complimentary changes on eligible fares. Points expire after 36 months of no earning activity. Cross-check current tier thresholds on airasia.com.
AirAsia sale calendar 2026-2027?
AirAsia runs the industry-famous Free Seats Sale twice a year (typically March and August to September), releasing base fares from RM0 or USD equivalent (taxes and fees still apply) for travel 6-11 months out. Additional windows include Black Friday (November 27, 2026), Cyber Monday (November 30, 2026), a year-end sale in December to January, and periodic 12.12, 11.11, and 10.10 promotions across Southeast Asia. AirAsia MOVE (SuperApp) members receive early sale access typically 24-72 hours before public release. Watch the AirAsia MOVE app notifications. Cross-check exact windows on airasia.com.
What is AirAsia's baggage and seat-select policy?
AirAsia is a full ULCC: base fare includes carry-on only (7kg total across bag and personal item, strictly enforced at boarding). Checked baggage (20kg, 25kg, 30kg, 40kg tiers) is a paid add-on and is significantly cheaper if bought at booking versus at the airport (up to 3x the price at check-in counter). Seat select, in-flight meals, priority boarding, and Xpress bag drop are all separately priced. AirAsia BIG Gold and Platinum tier receive a baseline 20kg allowance and priority boarding included. Buy add-ons at booking to avoid airport premium pricing. Cross-check bag pricing per route on airasia.com.
AirAsia vs Scoot for intra-Asia flights?
AirAsia and Scoot are the two dominant ULCCs across Southeast Asia. AirAsia has the largest ASEAN network with especially deep coverage from KUL and Bangkok DMK. Scoot (Singapore Airlines Group LCC) is stronger for SIN-origin routes and adds Boeing 787 medium-haul reach to Athens, Berlin, Perth, and Melbourne. AirAsia typically wins on intra-ASEAN price and route count; Scoot typically wins on SIN gateway convenience and select medium-haul routes to Europe and Australia. Both charge for bags, seats, and meals. Cross-check both plus Cebu Pacific and Batik Air on Google Flights or Skyscanner. Both are cashback-eligible via ShopBack where merchant pages are live.
AirAsia for US travellers connecting via LAX, SFO, or JFK?
AirAsia does not fly nonstop from any US airport. US travellers reach the AirAsia network by flying long-haul on Singapore Airlines (SIN), Qatar Airways (DOH-KUL or BKK), Cathay Pacific (HKG-BKK or KUL), Japan Airlines or ANA (NRT-KUL or BKK), or via Middle East hubs (Emirates DXB, Etihad AUH). From LAX and SFO, Singapore Airlines nonstop to SIN plus a Scoot or AirAsia onward is common. From JFK, one-stop via DOH, DXB, or HKG works. Buy AirAsia as a separate segment (not through-ticketed with the long-haul carrier); leave a 3-4 hour connection buffer for baggage recheck at the Asia hub.
What is AirAsia's cancellation and change policy?
AirAsia's Value Pack, Premium Flex, and Premium Flatbed fares each have different change and cancel rules. Value Pack (base LCC fare) is non-refundable but changeable for a fee plus fare difference up to 48 hours before departure. Premium Flex allows unlimited free changes up to 48 hours before departure. Premium Flatbed on AirAsia X medium-haul routes includes priority services and change flexibility. Credit account refunds (SNAP travel credit) are available on cancellation within specific windows; cash refunds require specific fare rules. Cross-check per-route fare rules on airasia.com before booking. Travel insurance sold at booking covers some cancellation reasons; premium plans cover cancel-for-any-reason.
What is the AirAsia MOVE SuperApp?
AirAsia MOVE (rebranded from airasia SuperApp in 2024) is the group's consumer app bundling flight booking, hotel booking, food delivery, ride-hailing, e-commerce, and financial services across Southeast Asia. For US travellers, the MOVE app is optional but useful for managing bookings, checking in, storing mobile boarding passes, receiving delay notifications, and buying add-ons post-booking. AirAsia Rewards Points earned across MOVE services can be redeemed against future flights. The web checkout on airasia.com works equally well for US travellers who prefer not to install the app. ShopBack cashback tracks on web bookings from the ShopBack AirAsia merchant page.
How do I earn ShopBack cashback on AirAsia?
Empty any pending AirAsia booking cart, then click through fresh from the ShopBack AirAsia merchant page to airasia.com. Log in to your AirAsia Rewards / BIG account to earn AirAsia Points on the booking, complete the checkout in the same browser session, and confirm the itinerary email. Avoid pasting unofficial third-party promo codes at checkout since they can break cashback tracking. Turn off ad-blockers during checkout. Cashback tracks on the paid fare plus eligible add-ons for eligible bookings. Rates and eligible booking types vary; see the current published rate on the ShopBack AirAsia merchant page.
Do cancellations at AirAsia affect my ShopBack cashback?
Yes. Any cancelled or refunded portion of your AirAsia booking is voided from the ShopBack cashback total, since AirAsia only pays commission on flown tickets. If you cancel a ticket within the refund or SNAP credit window or the flight is not flown, the pending cashback will not confirm on the refunded amount.
