Focal vs Audeze vs Sennheiser: US vs Japan vs Grey Market Prices 2026

Focal vs Audeze vs Sennheiser headphone prices for US buyers in 2026: US dealers vs Tokyo tax-free vs grey market. Japan is not the bargain it is for watches.
Cheapest place on earth to buy a pair of French-made Focal Bathys in September 2026 is a US authorized dealer with a sale tag, not Saint-Étienne, not a Tokyo tax-free counter, and not a grey market importer. That runs against everything Americans have learned from the watch and camera arbitrage of the last three years, where a weak yen and a 10% consumption tax refund turned Tokyo into a discount store. For high-end headphones the same yen does not deliver the same result, because the Japanese list prices on European headphones sit above US list to begin with, and because the one brand that is genuinely cheap at the source, Audeze, is made in California.
This article prices three reference headphones for a US buyer, the Focal Bathys (and Bathys MG), the Audeze MM-500 and the Sennheiser HD 800 S, across three channels: a US authorized dealer, a Tokyo tax-free retailer, and the grey market via Amazon Japan or eBay importers. It uses the brands' own September 2026 price lists, Yodobashi Camera's yen prices, the mid-September exchange rate of about 156 yen per dollar (Pound Sterling Live), the US$800 personal exemption and 3% band from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, state sales tax, and the warranty terms each brand publishes. It ends with a verdict by buyer type.
The verdict up front
- Focal Bathys: US list US$799, US sale US$649 (Vintage King, September 2026), Tokyo tax-free about US$801. Buy in the US on a sale. The Bathys MG at US$1,499 US versus about US$1,410 tax-free in Tokyo is close enough that only a buyer already in Japan should bother.
- Audeze MM-500: US$1,699 in the US where it is made; US$2,000 to US$2,300 in the UK and EU before VAT refunds. Buy in the US, full stop.
- Sennheiser HD 800 S: US list US$1,999.95, US sale US$1,399.99 (Woot, 2026), Tokyo tax-free about US$1,573, Amazon Japan sale about US$1,172 but as a grey import with no US warranty. Buy the US sale.
- Grey market: saves US$100 to US$250 against a US sale price on Sennheiser, nothing on Focal or Audeze, and costs the warranty in every case.

Why is Japan not a bargain for headphones when it is for watches?
The watch arbitrage works because Omega and Grand Seiko set their Japanese yen prices years ago at levels that a 2026 yen in the 150s turns into a discount, and because a 10% consumption tax refund on a five-figure item is real money. Headphone pricing is set differently. Focal's Japanese distributor prices the Bathys at 137,500 yen including tax, which at 156 yen per dollar is about US$881 on the shelf and about US$801 tax-free, slightly above the US list of US$799 and well above a US sale at US$649. Sennheiser's Japanese list on the HD 800 S, 269,850 yen, is also set so that even the tax-free number (about US$1,573) only beats US list, not the US street price.
Two more things cut against Japan. Headphones are a few hundred to two thousand dollars, so the 10% refund is tens to a couple of hundred dollars, which does not cover a hotel night. And the grey market in Japan is mostly a secondhand market: e-earphone in Akihabara and Fujiya Avic in Nakano are superb for used and demo units, but used goods are not sold tax-free and carry no manufacturer warranty.
Where Tokyo still wins is selection and audition. The Yodobashi and Bic Camera headphone floors, and the e-earphone showroom, let you A/B the Bathys against a Sony WH-1000XM6, an Apple AirPods Max or a HiFiMAN planar on the same afternoon, which no US retailer can match. Go to listen, not to save.
Is the Focal Bathys cheaper in Tokyo than at a US dealer?
Focal builds its headphones in Saint-Étienne and sells in the US through Focal Naim America's authorized dealer network, which includes hi-fi shops, Best Buy's online range and pro-audio houses like Vintage King. The standard Bathys, a closed-back Bluetooth and USB-DAC headphone with active noise cancelling and aptX Adaptive, carries a US$799 list and was at US$649 at Vintage King in September 2026. The Bathys MG, with magnesium drivers, lists at US$1,499 in the US, 1,199 euros in Europe and 999 pounds in the UK.
The Japan column is the surprise. Yodobashi lists the Bathys at 137,500 yen and the Bathys MG at 242,000 yen including tax. Tax-free and converted at 156, that is about US$801 and US$1,410: level with US list on the Bathys, about US$90 under US list on the MG. Against the US sale price on the standard Bathys, Tokyo loses by about US$150. The UK at 599 pounds is about US$809, and UK VAT is not refundable to visitors since 2021, so there is no British angle either.
The warranty point is the same for all three brands and worth stating once: a Bathys bought in Tokyo is a Japanese-market unit, and Focal's US warranty handling runs through its US distributor and its authorized dealers. It will work, it will pair, it will charge; it will not be a US warranty claim.
Audeze MM-500: made in Santa Ana, cheapest in Santa Ana
Audeze is the straightforward case. The MM-500, an open-back planar magnetic developed with producer Manny Marroquin, is built in Santa Ana, California and lists at US$1,699. Overseas it is 1,699 pounds at list and 1,485 pounds on sale in the UK (about US$2,005 to US$2,294), 1,799 euros in Germany and 1,899 euros in Finland (about US$2,087 to US$2,203). Those prices include 19% to 25% VAT that a US visitor could reclaim, but even a full refund only gets Europe back to roughly US$1,700 to US$1,850, with the headphone then outside the US warranty path.
That warranty path is explicit. Audeze's published policy says the product must have been originally purchased from Audeze or an authorized dealer to receive warranty service, that Audeze reserves the right to deny claims on products bought from anyone not on its dealer list, and that the warranty transfers if the original sale was authorized. The policy names Amazon and eBay marketplace sales because that is where unauthorized units appear. A used MM-500 with an authorized receipt is a sound buy; a sealed one from an unlisted seller is not.
Is a grey market Sennheiser HD 800 S actually cheaper?
The HD 800 S is the long-running open-back reference, built in Tullamore, Ireland, and sold in the US through Sennheiser's consumer division (now part of Sonova) at a list of US$1,999.95 as of September 2026. It is also the headphone that discounts hardest: Woot ran it at US$1,399.99 in 2026, and Amazon's own listings follow Woot's lead around the big sale windows.
Japan is where the tempting number lives. The Japanese list is 269,850 yen including tax, about US$1,573 tax-free, which beats US list by US$427 but loses to the US sale. Amazon Japan listed the HD 800 S at 182,800 yen including tax in a 2026 sale, about US$1,172, which beats the US sale by about US$230. But Amazon Japan does not sell tax-free, that unit is a Japanese-market unit, and Sennheiser's General Terms and Conditions for Warranty say in plain language that grey market products and purchases from non-authorized dealers are not covered, and that an authorized retailer who agrees to help may charge import duties on replacement parts.
So the honest HD 800 S math is: US$1,399.99 at a US authorized sale with a 24-month warranty, or about US$1,172 plus shipping and the customs line as a grey import with no warranty on a product whose driver replacement is not cheap. The HD 660S2, Sennheiser's more affordable open-back, traded between about US$429 and US$680 across US retailers during 2026 (Equipboard), which makes importing it pointless.
What does US customs charge, and does Japan's November change matter?
CBP's Customs Duty Information page: US$800 personal exemption for a resident back after at least 48 hours abroad, a flat 3% on the next US$1,000, the Harmonized Tariff Schedule rate above that, and joint declarations for household members travelling together. A single Bathys at about US$801 is at the exemption line; an HD 800 S at about US$1,573 puts about US$773 into the 3% band, roughly US$23. Customs is not the obstacle. Declare it and keep the receipt.
Japan's tax-free mechanics change on November 1 2026, per the Japan National Tourism Organization. Through October 31, Yodobashi or Bic Camera sell to a visitor at the price without the 10% consumption tax against a passport. From November 1, you pay the full price, register receipts via J-TaxRefund, and claim at customs before check-in. The refund is the same; the cash flow and the airport sequence change. For headphones this is a footnote, because the tax-free price does not beat a US sale in the first place.
Is the grey market ever worth it for headphones?
Three situations. A discontinued model that US dealers no longer stock, where eBay or a Japanese secondhand shop is the only source and warranty is moot. A Japan-only colourway or collaboration edition that never ships to the US. Or a buyer who services their own gear and values the US$200 more than the warranty. Outside those, the grey market on these three brands buys you nothing on Focal, nothing on Audeze, and a small saving with a real downside on Sennheiser.
Buy used instead if the goal is a lower number: an MM-500 or HD 800 S with the original authorized-dealer receipt keeps a transferable warranty (Audeze states this explicitly), and the US secondhand market on eBay, with ShopBack cashback on the click, is deep.
Verdict by buyer type
| Buyer | Best channel | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wants a Bathys for travel | US authorized dealer on sale | US$649 beats Tokyo tax-free at about US$801; US warranty |
| Wants a Bathys MG, already going to Tokyo | Yodobashi or Bic Camera tax-free, before November 1 | About US$90 under US list; otherwise buy at home |
| Studio or mixing buyer, MM-500 | Audeze direct or a US dealer | Made in California, US$1,699 list, cheapest in the world |
| Wants an HD 800 S at the lowest safe price | Woot or Amazon sale windows | US$1,399.99 with the 24-month warranty |
| Price-first HD 800 S buyer who services own gear | Amazon Japan or eBay import | About US$1,172, no warranty, declare on return |
| Collector hunting discontinued or Japan-only editions | e-earphone, Fujiya Avic, eBay | Selection; accept no warranty and no tax-free on used |
| Auditioning before a four-figure spend | Tokyo for listening, US for buying | Yodobashi and e-earphone floors; buy on the US sale afterward |
Where cashback fits
ShopBack cashback is a rebate on the order at a partner retailer, paid by ShopBack from the retailer's referral fee once the return window closes. For headphones in the US that means Best Buy and Amazon, both ShopBack US partners, both authorized for Sennheiser and Focal's consumer lines. Open ShopBack, click through to the retailer, add the headphones, check out in the same session, and the cashback tracks to your ShopBack account at the retailer's published rate. The sale windows that matter, Amazon Prime Big Deal Days on October 6 and 7 2026, Black Friday on November 27 and Cyber Monday on November 30, are when a US authorized price plus cashback is furthest ahead of any import.
What cashback does not do: it does not change the manufacturer's warranty, it does not reduce sales tax, it is not a store loyalty program and does not combine with one, and it does not apply to a Yodobashi counter in Shinjuku. It also applies to the eBay click for a used MM-500 or HD 800 S with an authorized receipt, which is the cheapest route to either headphone that keeps a warranty intact.
For the Tokyo audition trip, flights and hotels booked through ShopBack US travel partners earn cashback on the booking, which on a week in Japan is a larger line than any headphone saving in this article.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Focal Bathys cost in the US versus Japan in September 2026?
The standard Focal Bathys carries a US list price of US$799 and was selling at US$649 at Vintage King Audio, an authorized dealer, in September 2026. Yodobashi Camera in Japan lists the same Bathys at 137,500 yen including 10% consumption tax, which is 125,000 yen tax-free for a visitor, or about US$801 at the mid-September rate of roughly 156 yen per dollar reported by Pound Sterling Live. The Bathys MG is US$1,499 in the US and 242,000 yen at Yodobashi, about US$1,410 tax-free. So Japan is at best level with US list on the Bathys and clearly behind a US sale price, and only marginally ahead on the MG before you add the flight, US customs and the warranty question.
How does Audeze's warranty treat headphones bought from Amazon, eBay or a grey market seller?
Audeze's published warranty policy states that a product must have been originally purchased from Audeze directly or from an authorized dealer to receive warranty service, and that Audeze reserves the right to deny claims on purchases from anyone not on its dealer list. The warranty is transferable if the original purchase was from an authorized dealer. Audeze maintains a dealer list on its site and names marketplace sales on Amazon and eBay specifically in the policy, because third-party listings on those platforms are where unauthorized units usually surface. A used MM-500 with the original authorized-dealer receipt is fine; a new-in-box MM-500 from an unlisted importer is a gamble on a US$1,699 product.
What is the US customs treatment of headphones bought in Japan?
U.S. Customs and Border Protection gives a returning resident who has been abroad at least 48 hours an US$800 duty-free personal exemption, charges a flat 3% on the next US$1,000 of goods, and applies the Harmonized Tariff Schedule rate above that. A single pair of Bathys at about US$801 tax-free is essentially inside the exemption; a US$1,573 pair of HD 800 S puts about US$773 into the flat 3% band, roughly US$23 of duty. Family members who live together and travel together can pool exemptions on a joint declaration. Declare the headphones, keep the receipt, and keep the tax-free paperwork, which from November 1 2026 you will need at Japanese customs on departure in any case.
Is the Sennheiser HD 800 S cheaper in Japan than in the US?
On list price, slightly: Sennheiser's US site lists the HD 800 S at US$1,999.95 as of September 2026, while the Japanese list is 269,850 yen including tax, which is about US$1,573 tax-free at 156 yen per dollar. On street price, no: Woot, Amazon's deals site, ran the HD 800 S at US$1,399.99 more than once in 2026, and Amazon Japan listed it at 182,800 yen including tax (about US$1,172) in a sale, but Amazon Japan is not a tax-free retailer and a unit bought there is a Japanese-market unit. Sennheiser's warranty terms exclude grey market products, so the Amazon Japan route trades roughly US$230 against a US sale price for the loss of the two-year US warranty. For most buyers the Woot or authorized-dealer sale is the better deal.
Is it cheaper to buy an Audeze MM-500 in the US or abroad?
The US, by a wide margin. Audeze builds the MM-500 in Santa Ana, California and lists it at US$1,699. In the UK it is 1,699 pounds at list and 1,485 pounds on sale, which at about US$1.35 per pound is US$2,005 to US$2,294. In Germany it is 1,799 euros and in Finland 1,899 euros, roughly US$2,087 to US$2,203 at US$1.16 per euro. Those overseas prices include VAT that a US tourist could reclaim, but even after a 19% to 20% refund the European price only gets back to about US$1,700 to US$1,850, with no US warranty path. For an American product, buy it in America.
When do US authorized dealers discount Focal, Audeze and Sennheiser?
Sennheiser's consumer line discounts most predictably: Woot and Amazon ran the HD 800 S at US$1,399.99 against a US$1,999.95 list during 2026, and the HD 660S2 traded between about US$429 and US$680 across US retailers over the year per Equipboard's price tracking. Focal's US pricing is tighter, but authorized pro-audio dealers such as Vintage King had the Bathys at US$649 against US$799 list in September 2026. Audeze discounts least and mostly through its own site events. The calendar windows that matter are Amazon Prime Big Deal Days on October 6 and 7 2026, Black Friday on November 27 2026 and Cyber Monday on November 30 2026, when all three brands' US retailers run their deepest cuts of the year.
When is the best time to buy headphones in Japan, before or after November 1 2026?
Before, if you are going anyway. Through October 31 2026, a tax-free registered store such as Yodobashi Camera or Bic Camera sells to a foreign visitor at the price without the 10% consumption tax, on the spot, against a passport. From November 1 2026 you pay the full price, register the receipts through the J-TaxRefund system, and claim the 10% at customs before check-in on departure, per the Japan National Tourism Organization. The refund is the same 10%; the cash flow and the airport queue are what change. Either way, the tax-free price on a Bathys only matches US list and loses to a US sale, so the trip timing should be driven by the trip, not the headphones.
Can I use a Japanese-market Focal or Sennheiser in the US without problems?
Technically yes. Wired headphones such as the HD 800 S and MM-500 have no region coding, and the Bathys charges over USB-C and runs Bluetooth with aptX Adaptive, which work anywhere. The two things that change are the warranty and the service path. Sennheiser's warranty conditions say products bought from an unauthorized or grey market channel are not covered, and that even where an authorized retailer agrees to help, it may charge for import duties on replacement parts. Focal routes US warranty through its US distribution and authorized dealer network, so a Japanese-market unit is outside that path. Audeze's policy ties warranty to its authorized dealer list. A Japanese manual and a two-pin Japanese charger plug are the only physical differences you will notice.
Does a grey market Sennheiser come with the two-year warranty?
No. Sennheiser's General Terms and Conditions for Warranty, published on its regional sites, provide 24 months of coverage on products purchased from an authorized retailer and state that grey market products and products purchased from a non-authorized dealer are not covered. The same terms note that if you bought through an unauthorized channel you can still approach an authorized retailer in your country for service, but that retailer is entitled to charge separately for import duties, levies or taxes on any replacement parts. In practice a grey market HD 800 S is a US$1,100 to US$1,400 purchase with a repair bill risk attached; an authorized-dealer sale at US$1,399.99 is the same money with the warranty intact.
What if a Japanese retailer will not sell me the headphones tax-free?
It happens for three reasons: the store is not registered for tax-free sales, the item is a used or open-box unit from a shop such as e-earphone's secondhand floor (used goods are generally not sold tax-free), or you are a foreign resident of Japan rather than a visitor. Yodobashi Camera and Bic Camera flagship stores are registered and handle tax-free at a dedicated counter against a passport with a temporary-visitor stamp or the digital equivalent. If the store cannot do it, the decision is simple: at full Japanese price including 10% tax, a Bathys is about US$881, above US list, and an HD 800 S is about US$1,730, above a US sale. Walk away and buy at home.
Key takeaways
- Japan's tax-free price on a Focal Bathys (about US$801 at 156 yen) matches US list (US$799) and loses to a US sale (US$649, Vintage King, September 2026).
- Audeze MM-500 is made in Santa Ana and US$1,699 at home versus US$2,000 to US$2,300 in the UK and EU; there is no import case.
- Sennheiser HD 800 S is US$1,999.95 list, US$1,399.99 on US sales, about US$1,573 Tokyo tax-free, and about US$1,172 as an Amazon Japan grey import that Sennheiser's warranty terms exclude.
- CBP: US$800 exemption after 48 hours abroad, 3% on the next US$1,000, declare and keep the receipt; customs is tens of dollars on any of these.
- Japan's tax-free system switches to an airport refund on November 1 2026; same 10%, more paperwork.
- Buy on US sale windows (Prime Big Deal Days October 6 and 7, Black Friday November 27, Cyber Monday November 30) with ShopBack activated at Best Buy or Amazon; go to Tokyo to listen, not to save.
