Chase United Explorer vs Delta Amex vs Alaska Airlines Visa US 2026

Updated: September 2026.

Picking a US airline co-brand card in 2026 is less about the welcome bonus and more about the hub. The card that pays back the fee is the one flying out of your home airport, and the tie-breaker is how the checked-bag policy plus companion benefits map to how you actually travel. This guide walks the three mid-fee airline co-brand cards American flyers keep on the shortlist (Chase United Explorer, Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express, and Alaska Airlines Visa Signature) so you can pick the one that fits, not the one with the loudest brochure.

The US Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported that "US airlines carried 862 million systemwide passengers in calendar year 2024" (BTS Air Traffic release, 2025), which frames the addressable base for every airline co-brand card in the US market. Delta explicitly stated in its June 2026 relaunch announcement that "eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express Card Members will receive their first checked bag free on domestic Delta flights, with the benefit extended to travel companions on the same reservation" (Delta News Hub, June 2026), the single biggest 2026 airline-card policy change. IATA reported that "international scheduled passenger traffic recovered to 108 percent of the corresponding 2019 baseline in the first half of 2026" (IATA Air Passenger Market Analysis, August 2026), which keeps international-partner award seats scarce and makes hub-based earn more strategic than sale-hunting.

The verdict

For most US flyers in 2026 picking a mid-fee airline co-brand card, all three earn their keep if you match the card to your hub. The choice is about fit, not fee.

Chase United Explorer at $150 per year after a $0 intro year (Chase) is the pick for flyers based near a United hub (Newark, Chicago O'Hare, Denver, Houston, San Francisco, Washington Dulles). The card gives a free first checked bag for the primary cardholder plus one companion on the same reservation when the ticket is bought with the card, priority boarding, two United Club one-time passes each year, and 25% back on inflight food, beverages, and Wi-Fi on United-operated flights. For flyers who take 4 to 8 United round trips a year, the bag waiver plus the Club-pass value plus the priority-boarding time savings usually clear the $150 fee before the halfway point of the year.

Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express at $150 per year after a $0 intro year (American Express) had the biggest 2026 upgrade of the three. Beginning June 4, 2026, Delta expanded the SkyMiles Gold Amex checked-bag benefit to up to two free checked bags per cardmember on domestic Delta flights, one free bag on international, plus coverage for up to 8 travel companions per reservation (Delta News Hub). The relaunch reset the value proposition on this card for family travelers, because a single family-of-four Delta round trip with two bags each can cover the full $150 fee once over on bag-fee savings alone.

Alaska Airlines Visa Signature at $95 per year is the value pick for West Coast and Hawaiian-route flyers. The card's signature benefit is the annual $99 Companion Fare (Alaska Airlines), which lets a companion fly on the same itinerary as the primary cardholder in Main Cabin for $99 plus taxes and carrier-imposed fees (fees typically land around $23 to $50 on a domestic round trip).

On a $500 Seattle-to-New York round trip, the Companion Fare alone covers the $95 annual fee more than four times over. The card also waives the first checked bag for the primary cardholder plus up to 6 guests on the same reservation on Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines flights, which materially outpaces the companion cap on most co-brand cards.

None of the three is a fit for the household that flies whichever airline is cheapest that week. If you fly the sale, use a general travel card with transferable points and skip the airline co-brand entirely. The Federal Reserve's August 2026 G.19 release noted that "the average interest rate on credit card accounts assessed interest was 22.80 percent in the second quarter of 2026" (Federal Reserve G.19 Consumer Credit, August 2026), a screen every airline-card applicant should apply before chasing sign-up bonuses. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's 2025 Credit Card Market Report noted that "co-branded airline and hotel cards continue to grow among frequent-traveler segments who use the ancillary benefits (bag waivers, priority boarding, lounge access) more than the point earn itself" (CFPB Credit Card Market Report, 2025), which is exactly the hub-fit lens this guide argues.

Why hub matters more than welcome bonus

Every airline co-brand comparison ends up in the same place: the card whose airline hubs at your home airport wins, and no welcome bonus is big enough to overcome the wrong hub for the long-term hold.

Hub effect on redemption. Airlines protect saver-award seat inventory most aggressively out of their strongest hubs and least out of thin markets. A United hub flyer in Denver or Chicago has three to five times the saver-award access to Europe or Asia that a Denver flyer using American AAdvantage or Delta SkyMiles would have on the same routes. That maps directly to how much the card's earned miles actually redeem for, which is what miles are for.

Hub effect on schedule flexibility. When a flight is canceled or delayed at a hub, the airline has more mainline metal and more crew stationed at the same station to rebook you the same day. Non-hub airports usually get one or two flights per airline per day; when that flight cancels, you go the next day. Cards that route your loyalty into an airline that does not hub your city put you on the wrong side of that math every time weather or an ATC event hits.

Hub effect on bag-waiver value. The bag waiver value scales with how often you check bags on that specific airline. A Delta card in Atlanta covers 30 or 40 flights a year for a road-warrior. A Delta card in Anchorage covers 4 flights a year. Same card, same benefit, one-tenth the annual value.

Bottom line: pick the card for the airline whose hub is closest to your home airport, then run the fee math on top of that. Reversing the order (chasing the biggest welcome bonus first) locks you into miles you cannot easily redeem and a bag waiver you rarely use.

Chase United Explorer: the United hub default

Chase United Explorer is the default US mid-fee co-brand card for anyone based near a United hub.

The core math. The card costs $0 in year one, then $150 per year (Chase). Earn rates are 2 miles per dollar on United purchases, dining, and hotel stays booked directly with the hotel, plus 1 mile per dollar on everything else. The welcome bonus tier ran between 50,000 and 70,000 bonus miles across various 2026 windows plus a 10,000-mile bonus for adding an authorized user, all after roughly $3,000 in spend within the first three months. Verify the current published offer at creditcards.chase.com before applying, since United and Chase run limited-time elevated offers through the year.

Perk stack that clears the fee. Free first checked bag for the primary cardholder plus one companion on the same reservation, when the ticket is bought with the card and the primary's MileagePlus number is on the reservation. On a domestic United round trip where checked bags run $40 each way per person, a couple flying together clears $160 in bag-fee savings on a single trip, which alone exceeds the $150 fee.

Priority boarding on United-operated flights delivers Group 2 boarding, which gets carry-on space almost every time. Two United Club one-time passes per year are worth roughly $59 each per Club day pass pricing, or $118 in retail lounge value. A Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit of up to $120 every four years covers most of the enrollment cost for households renewing on schedule.

Family fit. Two adults plus two kids on the same reservation get four free first checked bags per direction, per trip. On two family United trips per year at $40 per bag per direction, that is $640 in bag-fee waivers on top of the priority-boarding time savings and the Club passes.

Where United Explorer wins. United hub flyers, MileagePlus loyalists chasing Premier status via the card's Premier-qualifying-points (PQP) contribution mechanism, and travelers who fly Star Alliance partners often enough to redeem United miles on Lufthansa, Air Canada, or ANA metal.

Where United Explorer is not the pick. Non-hub Southern and Southeastern markets (Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis, Charlotte) where United has thin frequency; travelers who prefer Delta's operational consistency; households that never check bags because they carry-on for weekend trips.

How ShopBack fits. Book flights via ShopBack partners like United at shopback.com/united to stack cashback on top of the card's welcome bonus on the same sign-up trip. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner at shopback.com/travel before booking the hotel side of any United trip to route the full itinerary through cashback-eligible partners.

Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express: the June 2026 relaunch story

Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex had the biggest mid-fee airline card refresh of the year, and it changed the calculus meaningfully for family travelers.

The core math. The card costs $0 in year one, then $150 per year (American Express). Earn rates are 2 miles per dollar on Delta purchases, on US supermarkets, and on restaurants worldwide (plus takeout and delivery in the US), and 1 mile per dollar on everything else. The 2026 welcome bonus tier landed roughly 70,000 to 90,000 bonus miles after $2,000 to $3,000 in eligible purchases within the first six months, depending on the offer window. Verify the current published welcome offer at americanexpress.com before applying.

The June 2026 checked-bag relaunch. Beginning June 4, 2026, Delta expanded the SkyMiles Gold Amex checked-bag benefit substantially. Cardholders now get up to two free checked bags per cardmember on domestic Delta flights (one free checked bag on international Delta flights), plus the waiver extends to up to 8 travel companions listed on the cardmember's reservation, for a total of 9 passengers per booking (Delta News Hub). Delta's own page confirms the waiver applies even when the flight is not paid on the Amex, as long as the cardholder's SkyMiles number is on the reservation (Delta).

That combination (two bags per person plus 9 passengers per reservation) is genuinely category-leading. On a family reunion booking with 6 travelers checking 2 bags each on a domestic Delta round trip at $40 per bag each way, the SkyMiles Gold Amex waives $960 in bag fees on a single trip. No other mid-fee card in the category matches that ceiling.

Perk stack. Zone 5 (Main Cabin 1) priority boarding, 15% off award pricing when booking Delta award tickets through delta.com and the Fly Delta app, foreign transaction fee waiver, and a $200 Delta stay credit at select Delta stays properties (verify current terms at americanexpress.com).

Family fit. The two-bag family expansion turned this card from a solo-flyer perk into a family-reunion card. A family of four making two Delta round trips per year with two bags each conservatively banks $640 to $960 in bag-fee waivers per year, which repays the $150 fee more than four times over on the bag benefit alone.

Where Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex wins. Delta hub flyers (Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis, Salt Lake, JFK, LAX, Seattle); family and group travelers who benefit from the 9-passenger reservation cap; Amex Membership Rewards ecosystem holders who value Delta transfer utility.

Where it is not the pick. Solo flyers who never check bags; travelers based in United or American hub markets where Delta frequency is thin; households that resent the shift to revenue-based SkyMiles award pricing (dynamic pricing at redemption time can be volatile compared to United's chart-anchored partner awards).

How ShopBack fits. Book flights via ShopBack partners like Delta at shopback.com/delta before applying to stack cashback on the sign-up trip. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner at shopback.com/travel before booking the hotel side to route the whole trip through cashback-eligible partners.

Alaska Airlines Visa Signature: the $95 value pick

Alaska Airlines Visa Signature (issued by Bank of America) is the value pick in the category on strict fee-to-benefit math.

The core math. The card costs $95 per year (Alaska Airlines). Earn rates in 2026 land at 3 miles per dollar on eligible Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines purchases, 2 miles per dollar on gas, EV charging, cable, local transit, and streaming, and 1 mile per dollar on everything else. The 2026 welcome offer tier ran around 60,000 to 70,000 bonus points plus a Companion Fare certificate after roughly $2,500 in purchases in the first 90 days. Verify current terms at bankofamerica.com or via Alaska's Atmos Rewards page before applying.

The Companion Fare, on its own. The annual $99 Companion Fare (Alaska Airlines FAQ) is the card's headline benefit and the reason most West Coast households hold it long-term. The certificate lets one companion fly with the primary cardholder on the same itinerary in Main Cabin for $99 plus taxes and carrier-imposed fees (fees typically land at roughly $23 to $50 on a domestic round trip).

The certificate is issued automatically on the card anniversary after the cardholder spends $6,000 or more in purchases in the prior anniversary year. On a $400 Seattle-to-Los Angeles round trip, the Companion Fare saves roughly $300; on a $600 Seattle-to-New York round trip, it saves roughly $500. A single use per year covers the $95 fee three to five times over.

Perk stack. Free first checked bag for the primary cardholder plus up to 6 guests on the same reservation on Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines flights (widest guest cap on bag waivers in the category), 20% back on eligible Alaska in-flight purchases, no foreign transaction fees, and preferred boarding on Alaska and Hawaiian.

Family fit. The Companion Fare is best used on the longest single round trip the household takes each year (typically a summer vacation or a family visit across the country). Chain the certificate onto whichever adult flies most next year to compound the value.

Where Alaska Airlines Visa wins. West Coast flyers (Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Anchorage); Hawaii travelers post the Alaska-Hawaiian combined loyalty program (Atmos Rewards); households doing one long domestic round trip per year that lands squarely on Alaska routing; value-conscious flyers unwilling to pay $150 for a mid-fee airline card.

Where it is not the pick. East Coast and Midwest flyers where Alaska frequency is thinner and hubs are further; households that fly Delta or United more than Alaska by any margin; travelers who care about lounge access at the mid-fee tier (Alaska Visa Signature does not include Alaska Lounge day passes at this tier).

How ShopBack fits. Book flights via ShopBack partners like Alaska Airlines at shopback.com/alaska-airlines before applying to stack cashback on the sign-up trip. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner at shopback.com/travel when planning a West Coast getaway to route the hotel and activities side through cashback-eligible partners on the same trip.

The pattern for hub-fit: United leads on lounge value and Star Alliance redemption reach, Delta leads on family and group bag coverage after the June 2026 relaunch, and Alaska leads on absolute value math because the annual Companion Fare pays for itself many times over on a single West Coast trip.

Break-even math, mid-fee airline edition

The break-even for a mid-fee airline card is not "spend to earn back the annual fee." It is "does the perk stack (bag waivers plus priority boarding plus companion benefits) exceed the fee on the trips you already take."

Chase United Explorer break-even. On $150 fee, the card breaks even on the bag waiver alone at roughly 4 domestic United round trips per year for a solo flyer checking one bag ($40 each way times 4 trips times 2 directions equals $320), or 2 trips for a couple ($40 each way times 2 people times 2 trips times 2 directions equals $320). Priority boarding is worth an additional roughly $15 to $25 per flight in avoided gate-check risk and time saved, and the two United Club passes are worth roughly $118 in retail value. Add the up-to-$120 Global Entry credit every four years and the card overpays for United flyers taking 3-plus round trips per year.

Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex break-even. On $150 fee, the card breaks even for a family of four on the June 2026 two-bag waiver on a single Delta round trip ($40 per bag times 4 people times 2 bags equals $320 per direction, or $640 per round trip). Solo Delta flyers need roughly 2 round trips per year to break even on bags alone. Add the 2x earn rate at US supermarkets, which meaningfully compounds for households running $10,000-plus of annual grocery spend on the card (that alone earns 20,000 SkyMiles annually, roughly worth $200 at typical redemption values).

Alaska Airlines Visa break-even. On $95 fee, the Companion Fare alone covers the fee on any single round trip where the paid-fare price exceeds $95 plus $50 in taxes. That is essentially every domestic Alaska round trip longer than the SFO-to-SEA shuttle. Bag waivers and preferred boarding are pure upside on top. Alaska Visa Signature is the easiest of the three to justify on paper, because a single trip pays for the year.

Two-vehicle household caveat on airline cards. Unlike warehouse-club or gas-linked cards, airline cards do not scale with driving volume. They scale with flying volume plus companion count. Households that fly two people twice a year (four one-way tickets total) find any of these three pays for itself on the first trip once bag fees enter the math.

How ShopBack layers on the sign-up. Applying for the United Explorer, Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex, or Alaska Airlines Visa through a cashback route can add a one-time sign-up rebate on top of the issuer's own welcome bonus. Compare cashback on shopback.com/finance before applying to see the current card offer window. The one-time payback here is typically the largest single-year travel-card cashback opportunity, on top of the miles the welcome bonus itself delivers.

Six flyer archetypes, mapped to a card

Match your household to the closest archetype below.

Flyer archetype	Best card	Why
Newark or Chicago family, 4 to 8 United trips per year	Chase United Explorer	Bag waiver plus Club passes plus PQP contribution toward Premier status
Atlanta family of four, 2 to 4 Delta trips per year	Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex	June 2026 two-bag family relaunch pays for the fee on the first trip
Seattle couple, one summer round trip cross-country	Alaska Airlines Visa Signature	Companion Fare saves $300 to $500 on a single trip
Group booker organizing 6-plus travelers per trip	Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex	9-passenger bag-waiver cap is best in category after June 2026
West Coast to Hawaii traveler on Alaska or Hawaiian metal	Alaska Airlines Visa Signature	Combined Atmos Rewards program plus 6-guest bag waiver plus Companion Fare
Mixed carrier flyer (whoever is cheapest that week)	None of these; use a general travel card	Airline co-brand cards do not pay back when loyalty is split across carriers

The single biggest mistake mid-fee airline card applicants make is applying for two cards in the same category in the same year. Two mid-fee airline cards at $150 each cost $300 in fees, split the household's loyalty across two programs, and dilute progress toward elite status at both. Pick one card, hold it for 12 months on statement-tracked flying data, then decide whether the second airline generates enough incremental trips to justify a second fee.

---

Household spend audit: 90 days of flight data before you apply

Before committing to a mid-fee airline co-brand card, run a 90-day flight audit on the household.

1. Pull the last 12 months of flight bookings from Gmail, credit card statements, or Google Flights history.
2. Segment by carrier: how many United, Delta, Alaska, American, and Southwest bookings did the household take?
3. Sum bag fees paid across all bookings (typically $40 to $60 per bag per direction on non-elite fares).
4. Tally companion count on each booking (is this usually a solo trip, a two-adult trip, or a family trip?).
5. Estimate priority-boarding value at roughly $15 to $25 per flight in avoided gate-checked carry-on risk plus time saved.
6. Compare the sum of bag fees, priority boarding value, and any lounge use to the card's annual fee.
7. If the projected annual perk value exceeds the fee by 50% or more, the card pays back reliably. If it clears the fee by a narrow margin, apply for the welcome bonus and hold for one year before deciding on renewal.

The audit is more useful than any online calculator because it uses your household's actual flying pattern instead of a brochure claim about flying frequency. It also catches the common mistake of overweighting the welcome bonus (which is one-time) versus the perk stack (which is annual).

Where ShopBack fits into the audit. During the audit window, route any planned flight or hotel bookings through ShopBack partners to build a baseline cashback trail on flights via shopback.com/united, shopback.com/delta, or shopback.com/alaska-airlines. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before every booking to keep hotel spend on cashback-eligible rails while the audit runs. Once the audit concludes and the household applies for the co-brand card, the ShopBack cashback layer continues on top of the airline's own miles and the card's welcome bonus.

Priority boarding and lounge access: how much are they really worth?

Priority boarding and lounge access are the two perks travelers most consistently underweight when comparing mid-fee airline cards.

Priority boarding. Chase United Explorer includes Group 2 priority boarding on United-operated flights; Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex includes Zone 5 (Main Cabin 1) boarding on Delta; Alaska Airlines Visa includes preferred boarding on Alaska and Hawaiian. Across all three, priority boarding on US domestic mainline routes reliably gets carry-on space in overhead bins because the group boards before general Main Cabin.

On the roughly 15 to 20% of US domestic flights that end with gate-checked carry-ons for late boarders (based on airline gate-check reporting), priority boarding avoids a 20 to 40 minute wait at baggage claim on landing, plus the risk of a damaged carry-on. Value that at roughly $15 to $25 per flight and it compounds to $100 to $300 per year for the mid-fee flyer.

Lounge access. Only Chase United Explorer includes lounge access at the mid-fee tier, and only as two United Club one-time passes per year. Retail United Club day passes run around $59 each, which puts the retail value of the two passes at $118 annually. Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex and Alaska Airlines Visa Signature do not include lounge access at their annual fees; both airlines reserve lounge access for their higher-fee reserve-tier co-brand cards.

Why it matters for the mid-fee comparison. If lounge access is a material need (long connections, family with young children needing a quiet space, business travelers on early morning flights), United Explorer is the only card in this three-way comparison that delivers it. If lounge access is nice-to-have but not need-to-have, either Delta or Alaska is often the better fit on absolute value.

---

When to skip a mid-fee airline card entirely

Not every household should hold an airline co-brand card. Skip a mid-fee airline card if any of the following applies:

• You fly the sale. If your household books whichever airline is cheapest that week, no airline co-brand card pays back reliably. Use a general travel card (transferable-points ecosystem such as Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, or Capital One Miles) instead.
• You take fewer than 2 round trips per year. The bag waiver plus priority boarding plus companion benefits are annual perks that scale with trip volume. Fewer than 2 trips per year, and the card struggles to earn back the fee.
• You never check bags. Priority boarding still gets you overhead bin space, but the biggest annual value on all three cards is the bag waiver. Carry-on-only travelers extract less than half the perk value.
• Your household already has a premium card in the same ecosystem. United Club Infinite Card includes United Club membership plus a broader bag waiver; Delta Reserve includes SkyClub access plus a Companion Certificate. If either of those is in the wallet, the mid-fee tier is duplicative.
• You want lounge access at a $150 fee. Only United Explorer includes limited Club passes at this fee tier. If lounge access is a hard requirement, skip Delta Gold and Alaska Visa Signature at this fee and step up to the reserve tier or a Priority Pass card.

Frequently asked questions

Which airline co-brand card is best for US flyers in 2026?

For most US flyers in 2026, the best mid-fee airline co-brand card depends on the home-airport hub. Chase United Explorer at $150 per year wins for United hub flyers (Newark, Chicago, Denver, Houston, San Francisco, Washington Dulles) because the bag waiver plus two United Club passes plus priority boarding pair well with United's route network. Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex at $150 per year wins for Delta loyalists after the June 2026 relaunch expanded the bag benefit to up to 2 free checked bags plus up to 8 companions per reservation (Delta News Hub). Alaska Airlines Visa at $95 per year wins on absolute value because the annual $99 Companion Fare can cover the fee on a single West Coast round trip.

What is the annual fee on Chase United Explorer in 2026?

The Chase United Explorer Card carries a $0 introductory fee for the first year, then $150 starting on the first day of the month after the cardholder anniversary (Chase). Verify current pricing at creditcards.chase.com before applying.

How many free checked bags does Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex include after the 2026 update?

Beginning June 4, 2026, Delta expanded the SkyMiles Gold Amex checked-bag benefit to up to 2 free checked bags per cardmember on domestic Delta flights (1 free bag on international Delta flights), with the benefit extending to up to 8 travel companions on the same reservation, for a total of 9 passengers per booking (Delta News Hub). The primary cardholder's SkyMiles number must be on the reservation.

Where does ShopBack fit for travelers picking an airline co-brand card?

Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner at shopback.com/travel before booking the flight, so the trip routes through cashback-eligible partners on hotels and activities in parallel with airline miles on the flight. Book flights via ShopBack partners like Alaska Airlines, Delta, or United to earn cashback on the sign-up trip, which can add material rebate on top of the card's welcome bonus.

Explain how the Alaska Airlines Visa Companion Fare works.

The Alaska Airlines Visa Companion Fare lets one companion fly on the same itinerary as the primary cardholder in Main Cabin for $99 plus taxes and carrier-imposed fees (typically $23 to $50 on a domestic round trip). The certificate is issued automatically on the card anniversary after the cardholder spends $6,000 or more in purchases in the prior anniversary year (Alaska Airlines FAQ). On a $500 Seattle-to-New York round trip, the Companion Fare covers the $95 annual fee more than four times over.

Is priority boarding worth it on a mid-fee airline card?

For flyers who consistently travel with a carry-on, priority boarding is the most consistently used perk on a mid-fee airline card. Chase United Explorer includes Group 2 boarding on United, Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex includes Zone 5 (Main Cabin 1) boarding on Delta, and Alaska Airlines Visa includes preferred boarding on Alaska and Hawaiian. Value averages roughly $15 to $25 per flight in avoided gate-check risk and time saved.

Should a household hold more than one mid-fee airline co-brand card?

Usually no. Two mid-fee airline cards at $150 each cost $300 per year in fees, split the household's loyalty across two programs, and dilute progress toward elite status at both. Pick the airline whose hub is closest to your home airport, hold that card for the bag and boarding perks, and use a general travel card for spend outside the airline ecosystem.

Can I earn cashback on airline card sign-ups through ShopBack?

Activate cashback via ShopBack before checkout at eligible online partners: start at shopback.com/finance to see the current cashback offer window on financial products. Cashback on card sign-ups posts to the ShopBack account separately from the issuer's own welcome bonus, so a shopper can stack Chase, Amex, or Bank of America welcome bonus miles with a one-time ShopBack rebate on the same application.

Do these airline cards charge foreign transaction fees in 2026?

No. Chase United Explorer, Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex, and Alaska Airlines Visa all waive foreign transaction fees on international purchases. Note that Amex international acceptance is thinner than Visa or Mastercard in most of Asia, parts of Latin America, and small merchants in Europe, which often makes a Visa co-brand the better single-card backup for international itineraries.

Would any of these three cards pair well with the ShopBack Travel Planner?

Yes. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner at shopback.com/travel before booking to route hotel and flight spend through cashback-eligible partners on the same trip. Any of the three cards pairs well because the ShopBack cashback layer applies on hotels and activities regardless of which airline you fly. Cardholders who book flights via ShopBack partners stack the airline card's earn rate on the flight plus ShopBack cashback on the hotel plus the loyalty program's own miles on the ticket.

How does ShopBack stack with a rewards card on the same purchase?

Use ShopBack to stack cashback on top of the card's category multiplier. Start at ShopBack, click through to the retailer, then pay with the card that earns the best rate for that category. ShopBack cashback posts to your wallet within a few hours and confirms after the retailer's return window closes. Activate ShopBack via the browser extension on desktop Chrome or Edge or the ShopBack in-app browser on iOS and Android.

Key takeaways

• The best mid-fee US airline co-brand card in 2026 depends on which airline hubs your home airport; the wrong hub locks you into miles that redeem poorly and a bag waiver you rarely use.
• Chase United Explorer at $150 per year wins for United hub flyers because the bag waiver for cardholder plus 1 companion, two United Club passes, and priority boarding pair well with United's route network.
• Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex at $150 per year had the biggest 2026 upgrade of the three: from June 4, 2026, the card offers up to 2 free checked bags on domestic Delta flights and covers up to 8 travel companions per reservation.
• Alaska Airlines Visa Signature at $95 per year is the value pick, because the annual $99 Companion Fare can cover the entire fee on a single West Coast round trip.
• All three cards waive foreign transaction fees, but Amex international acceptance is thinner than Visa or Mastercard outside major cities.
• Priority boarding is consistently the most-used perk; lounge access is only meaningfully included on United Explorer (2 Club passes per year).
• Run a 90-day flight audit before applying: match card to actual travel pattern, not brochure claim.
• Pair the airline card with cashback-eligible booking through ShopBack Travel Planner and merchant pages to stack the flight card's earn rate, ShopBack cashback on hotels, and airline miles on the flight itself.
• Applying for the card through a cashback route can add a one-time sign-up rebate on top of the issuer's welcome bonus, which is often the largest single-year travel-card payback in this category.
• Verify current fees, welcome bonuses, checked-bag rules, and companion terms directly at creditcards.chase.com, americanexpress.com, and bankofamerica.com before applying, since offers and policies do change through the year.

💡 Compare hotels and flights via ShopBack Travel Planner Route the whole trip through cashback-eligible partners on top of your airline card's miles.
