Costco Executive vs Sam's Club Plus vs BJ's Perks Rewards US 2026

Every warehouse club nudges you toward its pricier membership tier at the register, but the upgrade only pays off above a specific spending threshold, and that number is different at Costco, Sam's, and BJ's. The next 30 days (October 5 to November 4, 2026) are when the question gets expensive: the Thanksgiving (November 26) bulk run, Black Friday (November 27) electronics and the holiday pantry stock-up all land in one billing cycle, so this is the month to settle which club you shop and whether the upgrade tier pays before that spend hits. This guide works out where each tier actually breaks even, so you can tell whether the extra fee comes back to you or quietly disappears. Compare Costco, Sam's Club and Amazon on the bulk items you buy most before you commit to a club, and route the Costco or Sam's Club order through ShopBack. Amazon is not a ShopBack US merchant at the moment, so compare its price but do not expect cashback there.

The verdict

For US shoppers in 2026, the three big warehouse-club upgrade tiers solve different problems and the right pick depends on what you actually buy. Costco Executive at $130 per year (Costco) is the strongest pure rewards tier at 2% cash back on most Costco purchases, capped at $1,250 a year (Costco), and is the right pick if Costco is your primary grocery, gas, and tire store. Sam's Club Plus at $110 per year (Sam's Club) has the cleanest perk stack for families: 2% Sam's Cash (capped at $750 (Sam's Club)), free shipping on most online orders, early shopping hours, and 5 cents per gallon off gas. BJ's Club+ at $110 per year (BJ's) is the East Coast pick because BJ's accepts manufacturer coupons (Costco and Sam's do not), has tighter package sizes that suit smaller households, and pairs nicely with the BJ's One+ Mastercard for stackable rewards.

The break-even math is simple: at Costco you need roughly $3,250 of qualifying annual spend to recoup the Executive upgrade through the 2% certificate; at Sam's you need roughly $3,000 to recoup Plus through the cash back component, with the free shipping and gas perks as gravy. BJ's is fee-comparable to Sam's but the savings flow more from coupon stacking than tier rewards.

2026 fee snapshot (verified July 2026): Costco Gold Star $65 / Executive $130 (Costco); Sam's Club Club $50 / Plus $110 (Sam's Club); BJ's Club Card $60 / Club+ $110 (BJ's). Sam's Club raised Plus from $100 to $110 in H1 2026. Costco's last fee increase (from $60/$120 to $65/$130) took effect September 2024 and remains current. BJ's pricing has held steady since 2024.

Which club to buy from this quarter: Costco vs Sam's Club vs BJ's vs Amazon

The honest answer depends on what the Q4 basket looks like, because the tier math above only matters once you have picked the club you will actually shop. A pantry stock-up, a Black Friday TV and a two-person household's weekly run each have a different right seller, and the Amazon alternative is worth a check on anything that ships in a box.

Pick	Best for	When it is cheapest	Cashback path
Costco	Heavy weekly spend, gas, tires, Kirkland staples and the Thanksgiving bulk run	Monthly coupon-book cycles and the Black Friday week (Nov 23 to 27) warehouse savings on TVs and appliances	Activate ShopBack, then shop Costco
Sam's Club	Online-heavy households that want free shipping, Scan and Go and early hours	Monthly Instant Savings and the Black Friday to Cyber Monday window (Nov 27 to 30) for online orders	Activate ShopBack, then shop Sam's Club
BJ's	East Coast and Midwest couples who clip manufacturer coupons and want smaller pack sizes	Coupon-stacking weeks and the pre-Thanksgiving grocery promotions	Activate ShopBack, then shop BJ's (not a ShopBack partner in the US; the in-club price is the price)
Amazon	Subscribe and Save pantry refills and bulk paper goods without a membership	Prime Big Deal Days (Oct 6 to 7) and Cyber Monday (Nov 30) on comparable bulk SKUs	Not on ShopBack US right now, compare the price only

Compare Costco, Sam's Club and Amazon on the items you buy most, then shop whichever wins the per-unit check, activating ShopBack first for Costco or Sam's Club since Amazon is not on ShopBack US right now, and treat BJ's as the coupon-driven alternative where it is in your footprint.

What you're really paying for

Warehouse clubs sell two things at once: a low-margin retail experience and an annual membership. The membership fee is where most of the chain's profit comes from, which is why all three clubs aggressively upsell the upgrade tier at sign-up. The upgrade tier is worth it for some households and a small money loss for others.

Costco Executive is the most generous reward rate on paper but caps out. Costco's own Executive Rewards page states plainly that "Executive Members earn an annual 2% Reward on qualified purchases, and the reward is capped at and will not exceed $1,250 for any 12-month period" (Costco Executive 2% Reward FAQs, 2026). Reaching the $1,250 cap requires $62,500 of qualifying annual Costco spend, which is above nearly every household basket. The 2% Executive Reward applies to most warehouse and Costco.com spend, excluding categories like gas, tobacco, alcohol in some states, Costco gift cards, and membership fees. The reward arrives as a certificate redeemable in-warehouse, not cash. The $1,250 cap means that households spending above $62,500 a year at Costco (rare, but real for restaurant owners and large families) stop earning at the cap (Costco).

Sam's Club Plus rewards a similar 2% (called Sam's Cash) on most purchases, capped at $750 (Sam's Club). Note that Sam's Club announced a further fee increase on April 1, 2026: CNBC reported that "effective May 1, 2026, Sam's Club membership prices will change" with Plus rising from $110 to $120 annually and Club from $50 to $60 (CNBC, April 2026). Households renewing after May 1, 2026 should verify their current billed rate at samsclub.com. The Sam's Cash cap kicks in at $37,500 of annual spend, which still covers nearly every household. Plus adds free shipping on most Sam's online orders, free curbside pickup, and early shopping hours that genuinely matter to people who hate weekend crowds. Sam's Scan and Go, available to all tiers, is the single best in-warehouse mobile checkout experience in the category.

BJ's Club+ at the upgraded tier earns 2% back on most in-club purchases plus a multiplier with the BJ's One+ Mastercard (BJ's). BJ's accepts manufacturer paper coupons stacked on top of in-club instant savings, which neither Costco nor Sam's allows. That coupon stacking, plus the BJ's-only feature of selling some items in smaller packs than Costco or Sam's, makes BJ's the best fit for two-person households on the East Coast.

The deeper truth: warehouse clubs are loyalty programs disguised as supermarkets. The upgrade tier is worth it if you are already buying $50 to $100 per week at the club. Below that, the base tier is the right call.

The three tiers side by side

Dimension	Costco Executive	Sam's Club Plus	BJ's Club+
Annual fee (2026)	$130	$110	$110
Base tier fee	$65 (Gold Star)	$50 (Club)	$60 (Club Card)

Early shopping hours	Yes (9 to 10 a.m. on weekdays)	Yes (8 to 10 a.m. on weekdays)	Yes
Coupons accepted	No manufacturer coupons	No manufacturer coupons	Yes, stackable with in-club savings

Route online warehouse orders through ShopBack: Costco · Sam's Club · Walmart · Target

Find your household profile

Map your weekly behaviour to the right club, then decide whether to upgrade.

Household profile	Best base club	Upgrade worth it?	Why
Family of 4, $200/week at warehouse	Costco	Yes (Executive)	$10,400 annual spend earns $208 reward, net $143 after upgrade fee
Couple, $80/week, no kids	Sam's Club	Borderline	$4,160 spend earns $83 cash back, net $23 after $60 Plus upgrade delta
Single, occasional shopper	Costco Gold Star	No	Spend under $3,250 doesn't break even on Executive
East Coast family, coupon clipper	BJ's	Yes	Coupon stacking saves $200 to $500/yr on top of rewards
Restaurant operator	Costco Business + Executive	Yes	Capped reward still meaningful; faster checkout
Apartment dweller, small fridge	BJ's	Yes	Smaller pack sizes reduce waste
Suburban gas commuter	Costco	Yes if gas savings cover fee alone	30+ gallons/week at 20 cents off = $312/yr
Online-heavy shopper	Sam's Club Plus	Yes	Free shipping + Scan and Go offset upgrade in under 6 months
Senior on fixed income	Costco Gold Star	No	The Executive cap rarely matters at low spend
Two-warehouse household	Costco + Sam's	Yes on Costco only	The second membership rarely pays back

The single biggest mistake is signing up for two clubs at the same time. Pick one, commit to it for 12 months, then decide whether the second adds value. Most US households break the second membership within 18 months.

Three households, run through the math

In practice, here is how the math plays out for three real US households.

Household A: Phoenix family of 5, $220 per week at Costco including groceries, gas, and pharmacy. Annual spend roughly $11,400. The Executive reward at 2% returns $228, less the $65 upgrade cost, for a net $163 in pocket. Add the gas savings of roughly $300 per year over the local average and the Citi Costco Visa rewards (which earn an additional 4% on Costco gas at the pump up to a $7,000 annual limit). Total annual benefit: roughly $600 over a base tier with no gas savings.

Household B: Atlanta couple, $90 per week at Sam's Club plus weekly online orders for paper goods. Annual spend roughly $5,500 in-club and $1,200 online. Plus tier returns roughly $134 in Sam's Cash on the combined $6,700, less the $60 upgrade cost (Plus $110 minus Club $50), for a net $74. The free shipping saves roughly $150 per year on online orders. Total annual benefit of Plus over Club: roughly $224.

Household C: Boston empty-nester couple at BJ's. Spend $60 per week, heavy coupon use. Annual in-club spend $3,100. The 2% Club+ reward returns $62 (just above the $50 upgrade delta of Club+ over Club Card), but coupon stacking saves an additional $250 to $400 per year. Total annual benefit of Club+ over base tier: roughly $250.

Across all three, stacking warehouse-club credit cards (Citi Costco Visa, Sam's Club Mastercard, BJ's One+ Mastercard) adds 1 to 3% on top of the membership reward. Buying those credit cards through ShopBack pages where sign-up offers appear adds further cashback at account opening, which is the single largest one-time payback in this category.

Compare non-club bulk sources with cashback: Walmart · Target · Chewy · Instacart

When this does NOT apply

• You live more than 20 miles from any warehouse club. Drive time and gas cost erode the savings. A $130 Executive membership saves nothing if you only visit four times a year.
• You buy fresh produce daily. Warehouse pack sizes waste food in small households. A 5-pound clamshell of strawberries goes mouldy in a two-person home.
• You rent and lack pantry space. Bulk paper goods, condiments, and dry goods require storage. Without it, the per-unit savings disappear into a hallway closet you no longer have.
• You travel constantly. Warehouse clubs reward steady weekly spend. If you are gone 12 weeks a year, the membership math weakens.
• You only want a gas membership. Costco's gas alone almost never justifies the $65 base fee, let alone $130 Executive. Local gas apps and credit card gas rewards close the gap.
• You have a Kirkland-resistant pantry. Costco's house brand is the value driver. If you only buy national brands, the savings shrink to single digits compared with a strong supermarket on sale.
• You hate Sundays at the warehouse. All three clubs are zoo-like on weekends. If you can only shop Sundays, build the early-hours perk into your decision (Plus and Club+ both unlock weekday early access).

Stack warehouse-club online orders with cashback: Costco · Sam's Club · Best Buy · Home Depot

2026 fee snapshot

Verified as of July 2026 against each club's own membership page:

Club	Base tier	Upgrade tier	Notes
Costco	Gold Star $65/yr	Executive $130/yr (Costco)	Last increase September 2024; unchanged through 2026
Sam's Club	Club $50/yr	Plus $110/yr (Sam's Club)	Plus rose from $100 to $110 in H1 2026; Club unchanged
BJ's Wholesale	Club Card $60/yr	Club+ $110/yr (BJ's)	Unchanged since 2024

The Costco Executive fee has held since the September 2024 increase and is the most stable of the three. Sam's Club Plus rose $10 through H1 2026, tightening the upgrade break-even by roughly $500 of annual club spend (from about $2,000 pre-hike to about $3,000 post-hike, or $500 additional annual spend to cover the fee delta at 2% Sam's Cash). BJ's remains the East Coast pick and did not touch pricing this year.

If you are already inside a club and the tier upgrade fee still fits your annual spend, the 2026 price bump is not a reason to switch clubs; it is a reason to double-check that your last 12 months of spend still clears the upgrade break-even.

Where cashback fits

Cashback is the step after you have chosen the club, not the reason to choose one. Settle the tier question on your own 12 months of spend first, then for the online part of the basket activate ShopBack before you click through to Costco or Sam's Club so the order tracks. BJ's is not a ShopBack partner in the US, so its savings come from coupon stacking at the register rather than from a rebate.

The purchases around a warehouse-club household are ShopBack merchants too. Pet food in bulk at Chewy, the Black Friday TV compared across Best Buy and Walmart, the Thanksgiving Instacart order at Instacart, and the garage shelving for all those bulk packs at Home Depot all sit on the same account. Pantry refills on Subscribe and Save at Amazon do not, since Amazon is not a ShopBack US merchant at the moment, so compare its price but do not expect cashback there.

One caution: ShopBack cashback is a separate rebate paid by ShopBack on eligible online orders. It does not apply to membership fees, and this article makes no claim about combining it with the Costco Executive Reward certificate, Sam's Cash, BJ's rewards, card multipliers or store credit, which are each governed by the club's or issuer's own terms.

Frequently asked questions

Is Costco Executive membership worth it in 2026?

Yes if you spend more than $3,000 a year at Costco. The Executive tier costs $130 a year versus $65 for the Gold Star base tier (Costco), an upgrade cost of $65. You need $3,250 of qualifying annual spend at 2% to earn that $65 back in the form of the Executive Reward certificate. Below that spend level, stay on Gold Star. Costco's Executive Rewards page confirms directly: "Executive Members earn an annual 2% Reward on qualified purchases, and the reward is capped at and will not exceed $1,250 for any 12-month period" (Costco), which corresponds to $62,500 of qualifying annual spend. Executive Members also receive a $10 monthly credit on SameDay.Costco.com or Costco via Instacart (effective June 30, 2025), worth up to $120 per year if used consistently.

Which warehouse club has the cheapest gas in the US?

Costco is usually the cheapest at the pump in most US metros, typically 15 to 30 cents below the local average. Sam's Club Plus members get an additional 5 cents per gallon off Sam's already-low gas price, which often ties or beats Costco. BJ's Club+ members get 5 cents off per gallon at BJ's Gas (BJ's), but BJ's pump prices start higher than Costco in most East Coast markets.

Can I use one warehouse club membership across two households?

No, not officially. Each membership covers the primary cardholder plus one free household card for someone at the same address. All three clubs now scan membership cards or use facial recognition at the entrance and at checkout. The free household card is the only legitimate way to share, and the second cardholder must live at the same address.

What is the return policy on electronics?

All three clubs cap electronics returns at 90 days from purchase. Outside of electronics, all three have a "satisfaction guaranteed" policy with no time limit on most goods, though abuse of the policy can lead to membership cancellation. Costco's return policy is the most lenient in practice, but the chain has tightened enforcement on serial returners since 2024.

Is Costco Business better than Costco Executive?

Different products. Costco Business is a membership type for business owners (allows resale, includes business hours access). Executive is the upgraded reward tier. You can stack: a Costco Business Executive membership exists and combines both. For a sole proprietor or restaurant, Business Executive is usually the strongest pick.

What are the 2026 US warehouse club membership fees?

As of July 2026, Costco is $65/yr for Gold Star and $130/yr for Executive (Costco); Sam's Club is $50/yr for Club and $110/yr for Plus (Sam's Club); BJ's is $60/yr for Club Card and $110/yr for Club+ (BJ's). Sam's Club raised Plus from $100 to $110 in H1 2026. Costco's last increase (September 2024) took Gold Star from $60 to $65 and Executive from $120 to $130 and remains current. BJ's has held prices since 2024.

Did any US warehouse club raise membership fees in 2026?

Yes, Sam's Club raised Plus from $100 to $110 in H1 2026 (Club unchanged at $50). Costco last raised fees in September 2024 and has held pricing through 2026. BJ's Wholesale did not change fees in 2026. Historically, Costco has raised fees every 5 to 6 years.

Which is cheaper for a new membership in 2026, Sam's Club Plus or BJ's Club+?

Both cost $110 per year at the upgrade tier. Sam's Club Plus offers 2% Sam's Cash on most purchases (capped $750/yr), 5 cents off per gallon on Sam's gas, free shipping on most online orders, and early hours. BJ's Club+ accepts manufacturer coupons (Sam's does not), stocks smaller pack sizes suited to two-person households, and pairs with the BJ's One+ Mastercard for stackable rewards. BJ's is East Coast + Midwest only; Sam's has near-national footprint.

Do warehouse club credit cards pay back the upgrade fee?

Often yes within the first year if the sign-up bonus is hit. The Citi Costco Visa offers a moderate sign-up bonus plus 4% on Costco gas (capped at $7,000) and 3% on travel and restaurants. The Sam's Club Mastercard offers up to 5% on Sam's gas and 3% on dining. The BJ's One+ Mastercard layers an extra 1 to 5% depending on category on top of the Club+ rewards.

How do I earn cashback on warehouse-club online orders through ShopBack?

Activate ShopBack before clicking through to the retailer, then complete checkout in one session. Cashback tracks on eligible order value at Costco and Sam's Club for online orders. Not all warehouse-club categories are eligible; verify the current published rate and eligible categories on each merchant page before you buy.

Which US retailers does ShopBack support for warehouse-style bulk shopping?

For direct warehouse-club online orders, Costco and Sam's Club are the primary ShopBack routes. For non-club bulk substitutes, Walmart and Target offer overlapping SKUs on paper goods, pantry staples, and household essentials. Amazon (Subscribe & Save, Business, Warehouse) overlaps too, but Amazon is not a ShopBack US merchant at the moment, so compare its price only.

Where can I find the cheapest bulk household goods with cashback?

No single retailer wins across every household basket. For paper goods and pantry, Costco and Sam's Club usually lead on per-unit price, but Amazon can match on Subscribe & Save-eligible SKUs. Compare the specific items you buy most, then route through ShopBack if Costco or Sam's Club wins the per-unit price check; Amazon is not a ShopBack US merchant at the moment, so compare its price only.

Does ShopBack stack with warehouse-club loyalty rewards?

ShopBack cashback on online orders posts to your ShopBack account separately from any Costco Executive certificate or Sam's Cash you earn on the same transaction. On Costco and Sam's Club online orders, cashback tracks alongside the retailer's own rewards. Program terms change; verify current cashback rates and eligibility on each merchant page.

How much cashback can I earn on a typical warehouse-club online run?

Cashback depends on which retailer you shop and the current published rate. A $500 monthly bulk-goods spend split across Costco and Sam's Club can add meaningful rebate on top of any club reward you already earn. ShopBack does not guarantee a flat rate across warehouse-club categories; check the live rate on each merchant page before you order.

When is the best deal window for stocking up at warehouse clubs?

Warehouse-club coupon books at Costco and Sam's Club refresh roughly monthly and are strongest on household staples. Amazon Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days drive the deepest cuts on comparable bulk SKUs at Amazon, which is not a ShopBack US merchant at the moment, so compare its price only. Black Friday and Cyber Monday drive the widest sitewide discounts across Walmart and Target on bulk pantry and household essentials.

Does ShopBack cashback apply to Costco Executive, Sam's Club Plus, or BJ's Club+ upgrade fees?

Typically no. Warehouse-club membership fees, including Costco Executive ($130), Sam's Club Plus ($110), and BJ's Club+ ($110), generally sit outside the ShopBack cashback mechanic because membership charges usually fall outside qualifying-purchase categories on the merchant page. ShopBack cashback tracks on eligible product orders you place after activating and clicking through Costco or Sam's Club, not on membership signup or renewal charges. Check the current merchant page for any special membership-signup promotions before assuming eligibility.

Should I do the Thanksgiving and holiday bulk run at Costco, Sam's Club or BJ's in 2026?

It depends on the basket and where you live. Costco wins for a large family doing one big pre-Thanksgiving (November 26) run on Kirkland staples, gas and a Black Friday TV, because the Executive Reward certificate and the warehouse savings land on the same spend. Sam's Club wins when you want the paper goods and pantry delivered free and the fresh items picked up on an early-hours weekday. BJ's wins for a two-person East Coast household that clips manufacturer coupons and wants smaller packs. Check ShopBack before you place the online part of the order at Costco or Sam's Club so it tracks.

Key takeaways

• Costco Executive at $130/yr is the strongest reward rate but caps at $1,250 and breaks even at about $3,250 of annual spend
• Sam's Club Plus at $110/yr (raised from $100 in H1 2026) breaks even at about $3,000 and adds free shipping plus early hours that matter for busy households, with Sam's Cash 2% capped at $750
• BJ's Club+ at $110/yr is the East Coast pick because coupon stacking and smaller pack sizes outperform Costco for couples and small families
• Gas savings alone rarely justify the upgrade tier; the upgrade pays for itself through grocery and merchandise spend
• The free household card is the only legitimate way to share a membership; the clubs now check at the door and at checkout
• Pair the warehouse credit card with the membership for an extra 1 to 5% layer; sign up through ShopBack for additional cashback at account opening
• Pick one club for 12 months before adding a second; most second memberships go unused
• Costco's house brand (Kirkland) drives most of the per-unit savings; without it, the value gap closes
• The 90-day electronics return window is universal; outside of electronics, the satisfaction guarantee is honoured but enforced against serial returners
• For very small households, BJ's smaller pack sizes prevent food waste better than Costco's

FAQs

How is ShopBack cashback taxed? In most markets, ShopBack cashback is treated as a rebate or discount rather than income and is not taxable at the consumer level. Rules vary by jurisdiction; if unsure, check with a local tax advisor and consult the ShopBack Help Centre for current guidance.
