Does Target Price Match or Adjust Prices After You Buy in 2026?
Target price matches its own prices: if Target.com, a Target store or a Target Circle deal shows a lower price on the identical item, Target will match it at checkout or adjust it within 14 days after you buy. Here are the rules, the exclusions and the other official ways to pay less at Target.
Target price matches its own prices. According to Target's Price Match Guarantee at the time of writing, if you buy a qualifying item and then find the identical item for less at Target.com, in a Target store or with a Target Circle deal, Target will match it at checkout or adjust the price within 14 days after you buy, as long as you have the original receipt or packing slip. The policy covers Target prices only, so for US shoppers in 2026 the lowest Target total usually comes from Target's own deals, a price check after you buy, and going through ShopBack before you check out.
New to ShopBack? ShopBack US is a free cashback platform: you go through ShopBack before you buy at stores like Target, and part of what you spend comes back to you as cash. It takes a couple of minutes to sign up, and the live rate is shown on each store's ShopBack page.
Building a Target cart? Go through ShopBack before you check out at Target so you pay less on the same order.
The verdict
Does Target price match? It does, against Target's own prices, at checkout or within 14 days after you buy. The quick version of the rules, all from Target's Price Match Guarantee at the time of writing:
| Question | Target's answer |
|---|---|
| What prices count | Target.com, Target stores and Target Circle deals |
| Time limit | At purchase or within 14 days after |
| Proof | The live price on your phone (Target.com, Target app or digital ad); screenshots and pictures are not accepted |
| Receipt | Original receipt (physical or digital) or packing slip for adjustments after purchase |
| Same item | Identical brand, size, weight, color, quantity and model number |
| Other Target stores | In-store prices from a different Target store are excluded |
| Alaska and Hawaii | Matching to Target.com or app prices is not available |
Does Target price match or adjust prices after you buy?
Target will adjust the price of a qualifying item within 14 days after purchase if Target's own price drops, according to its Price Match Guarantee. Target says it will match when you "buy a qualifying item at Target and then find the identical item for less at Target.com, in Target stores or with a Target Circle deal."
For a store purchase: go to Guest Services or ask at checkout, bring proof of the current lower Target price (shown live on your phone, since Target does not accept screenshots or pictures), and bring the original receipt if you already bought the item.
For a Target.com or Target app order: chat with Target online or call Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869, with your order number, the item details and the current lower price ready.
A few rules decide whether an adjustment goes through:
- Identical item only. Brand, size, weight, color, quantity and model number must all match.
- The lower price must be live. Target says the price must be listed and valid at the time of the match, and it may decline a request it cannot verify.
- Target Circle deals count. Target says proof of a Circle deal needs you to sign in, sign up or enter your mobile number at checkout.
- Store app price must match your store. When you use the Target app as proof, it must show the price for the store you are in.
Does Target price match other stores in 2026?
Target's current Price Match Guarantee only describes matching Target's own prices: Target.com, Target stores and Target Circle deals. It does not list other retailers as an eligible source. In practice, that means you compare other stores' prices yourself and buy where the total is lowest, and you use Target's policy to protect a Target purchase if Target's own price drops within 14 days.
Target does cross-match between its own channels: it matches Target.com prices on in-store purchases and in-store prices on Target.com purchases. What it excludes is an in-store price from a different Target store.
What Target won't price match
According to Target, these are excluded from price matching:
- Clearance, closeout and liquidation sales.
- Damaged, used, open-package, refurbished, pre-owned, or rent and lease-to-own items.
- Discounts on a whole store or site purchase, and deals that need a minimum purchase.
- Non-branded items and pricing caused by typographical errors.
- Credit card offers, gift card offers, service offers, bundled offers, sales tax promotions, free items, rebates or mail-in offers.
- Contract mobile phones and plans, optical, product services such as warranties or assembly, clinic and pharmacy purchases, and pre-order items.
Target also says Target Circle Bonuses (the personal offers you tap to add), gift card offers, Registry completion coupons and Target coupons cannot be combined with a price match. Manufacturer coupons are applied after a price match, for in-store purchases only.
Groceries have their own rule. Target says produce must be the identical item, brand, size, weight and quantity, sold in the same unit of measure (per pound vs per item), and stores that are not SuperTargets cannot match per-pound items.
Target Plus items (sold on Target.com by partner sellers) can be matched within 14 days, but only to a lower price from the same Target Plus partner on Target.com or a Target Circle deal. Target items and Target Plus items cannot be matched against each other.
Target official deals: the cheapest ways to save at Target
Target's own programs are the official deals, and they are the first place to look for a lower price. In order of how often they help most shoppers:
- Target Circle (free). Joining is free, and members get Target Circle deals that apply automatically when you identify yourself at checkout. Circle deals also count as a price you can match within 14 days.
- Price checks after you buy. Within 14 days, check the item on Target.com or the Target app. If Target's price has dropped, ask for an adjustment.
- Target Circle Card. According to Target at the time of writing, the Circle Card gives 5% off at checkout every day, in store and online, free 2-day shipping on hundreds of thousands of items at Target.com, an extra 30 days to return items, and no annual or monthly fees. It comes as a debit card linked to your checking account or as a credit card that needs approval.
- Target Circle 360. Target's paid membership is regularly $99 a year or $10.99 a month, and $49 a year or $4.99 a month for Circle Card holders, according to Target. It includes same-day delivery from Target and other local stores with no markups, monthly freebies and free shipping on eligible items.
- Go through ShopBack before you check out. For stores like Target, going through ShopBack is an essential step before you check out, so you pay less on the same order.
Target Circle rewards: which official option is cheapest?
For most occasional shoppers, free Target Circle is the cheapest official option, because it costs nothing and unlocks Circle deals. The Circle Card makes sense if you shop at Target regularly and want 5% off at checkout without an annual fee. Target Circle 360 is a delivery membership: it pays for itself mainly if you use same-day delivery often enough to beat the $99 a year regular price (or $49 a year as a Circle Card holder).
Target cashback and credit card rewards in 2026
The Target Circle Card's 5% comes off at the register when you pay with it, while paying with a general rewards card instead earns that card's own points or cash back. According to Target, the Target Mastercard version of the Circle Card also earns 2% on dining and gas and 1% on other purchases outside Target.
Using a card with ShopBack. Usually, the card you pay with and going through ShopBack are separate steps, so paying with a rewards card or the Target Circle Card does not normally stop a ShopBack order from tracking. Payment-method rules can differ, so check the merchant's terms on the Target ShopBack page before you check out.
Target cashback through a cashback site
Target is on ShopBack US, so you can get cash back on eligible Target orders by going through ShopBack before you check out. Going through ShopBack gets you a cash rebate on the same order, at the same store. Cashback lowers what you actually pay for an order. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles.
Here is an illustrative example. On a $150 Target order at an illustrative 5%, $7.50 comes back, so the effective price is $142.50. Rates and eligible categories change, so check the live rate and terms on the Target page on ShopBack US on the day you shop.
How to do it:
- Sign in to ShopBack US and open the Target page.
- Tap through to target.com (or use the ShopBack app).
- Add your items and check out in the same session.
- If Target's price drops within 14 days, you can still ask Target for a price adjustment under its own policy.
Other big-box stores to compare
Target sits in the same category as Walmart, Best Buy and Kohl's, so it is worth checking the total at one or two of them on bigger purchases; whichever you pick, open its ShopBack page first.
Frequently asked questions
Does Target price match or adjust prices after you buy?
Target matches its own prices. According to Target's Price Match Guarantee at the time of writing, if you buy a qualifying item and then find the identical item for less at Target.com, in a Target store or with a Target Circle deal, Target will match the price at the time of purchase or within 14 days after purchase. For an adjustment after you buy, you need the original receipt or packing slip.
Does Target price match other stores like Walmart?
Target's current Price Match Guarantee describes matching Target's own prices only: Target.com, Target stores and Target Circle deals. It does not list other retailers as eligible sources, so plan on comparing other stores' prices yourself rather than asking Target to match them.
How long do I have to ask Target for a price adjustment?
You have 14 days. Target says price matches can be requested at the time of purchase or within 14 days after purchase, and original receipts, physical or digital, or packing slips are required for adjustments in that window.
How do I request a Target price match?
In store, ask at checkout or Guest Services and show the current lower price on your phone, from Target.com, the Target app or the digital ad; Target says screenshots or pictures are not accepted. For Target.com or app orders, chat with Target online or call Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869 with your order number ready.
What items does Target not price match?
Target lists exclusions including clearance, closeout and liquidation items, damaged, used, open-package or refurbished items, deals that need a minimum purchase, discounts on the whole purchase, gift card offers, credit card offers, free items, rebates, pre-orders, pharmacy and optical, and pricing errors. Target Circle Bonuses, Registry completion coupons and Target coupons cannot be combined with a price match.
Does Target price match between Target stores?
Target excludes in-store price matches from other Target stores. It does match Target.com prices on in-store purchases and in-store prices on Target.com purchases, and when you use the Target app as proof, the app must be showing the price for your current store.
What is the cheapest way to shop at Target?
Use Target's own tools first: join Target Circle for free to unlock Circle deals, check prices again within 14 days for a price adjustment, and if you shop at Target often, compare the Target Circle Card, which Target says takes 5% off at checkout in store and online. Then go through ShopBack US before you check out so part of what you pay comes back as cash.
How much does Target Circle 360 cost?
According to Target at the time of writing, Target Circle 360 is regularly $99 a year or $10.99 a month, and Target Circle Card holders pay $49 a year or $4.99 a month. Membership includes same-day delivery from Target and other local stores with no markups, monthly freebies and free shipping on eligible items.
Can I use a credit card and ShopBack on the same Target order?
Usually: the card you pay with and the ShopBack visit are separate steps, so paying with a rewards card or the Target Circle Card does not normally stop a ShopBack order from tracking. Payment-method rules can differ, so check the merchant's terms on the Target ShopBack page before you check out.
Can I get cashback at Target?
You can, through ShopBack US. Go through ShopBack before you check out at Target: open the Target page on ShopBack, tap through to target.com and place the order in the same session. On a $150 order at an illustrative 5%, $7.50 comes back, so the effective price is $142.50; check the live rate on the Target ShopBack page.
