Verdict: For a NYC to Tokyo trip booked in August 2026 (flight + 5 nights in Shinjuku + 3 activities), ShopBack Travel Planner earned meaningful USD cashback on top of Trip.com's normal price, comparable to a credit card travel-category multiplier on the same booking. The value is not that Travel Planner beats every OTA on price. It is that Travel Planner adds a cashback layer to whichever integrated OTA you were going to book with anyway, and shows the per-OTA effective price side by side so you pick the best one before you commit.

Start here: Open Travel Planner at shopback.com/travel, search your route, compare per-OTA prices with cashback, and book through the Planner to layer USD cashback on top of the OTA's normal price.

What Travel Planner is, in one paragraph

ShopBack Travel Planner is a price-comparison surface for travel with USD cashback layered on every result. It launched 14 July 2026 at shopback.com/travel, and it lives on both web and the ShopBack mobile app. Search flights, stays, activities, or cars. See each result as a card with the OTA's price, the ShopBack cashback rate, and the effective price after cashback. Book through the Planner and the transaction routes through ShopBack's affiliate link, so cashback applies.

Verified integrated OTAs in the US: Trip.com (flights and stays), Pelago (activities), Dida (hotel inventory). This is the current confirmed set. Other OTAs you may see in general travel booking (Expedia, Booking.com, Skyscanner, Klook, Viator) are not confirmed as Travel Planner OTAs unless separately verified, so I am not going to claim them here.

If ShopBack itself is new to you: it is a free everyday rewards platform, launched in the US in 2024, with 20M+ active annual members globally, US$900M+ paid in cashback since 2014, and 2,000+ US merchant partners per the June 2025 US press release. Named to Fast Company's 2026 World's Most Innovative Companies list, Finance and Personal Finance category, on 24 March 2026.

The trip: NYC to Tokyo, mid-October 2026

For context on what I was booking:

• Route: JFK to HND, round trip, mid-October departure, 6-day trip.
• Passenger: One adult.
• Hotel: 5 nights in Shinjuku, mid-range business hotel.
• Activities: 3 experiences (a food tour, a day trip, and one museum pass).
• Travel dates: Locked to a specific work-schedule window, so no calendar flexibility.
• Card in wallet: A travel-category credit card that earns 3x on flights and hotels booked through the issuer's travel portal or directly with the OTA, plus 1x general.

Because the dates were fixed, this was not a "cheapest possible" search. It was a "best effective price on the OTAs I have available" search. This is the exact use case Travel Planner is built for.

Step 1: The flight search

Opened shopback.com/travel in Chrome, hit the Flights tab, entered JFK to HND round-trip, mid-October dates.

Travel Planner returned a list of flight options as cards. Each card showed:

• Airline and route.
• Total round-trip price.
• ShopBack cashback rate and amount for this booking.
• Effective price (total minus cashback) prominently displayed.
• "Book" button that opens the OTA's checkout via ShopBack's affiliate link.

At the current integrated OTA set, Trip.com is the primary flight comparison source. The layout made it easy to see which itinerary had the best effective price after cashback was applied. Rather than quote a specific dollar figure (rates and prices change; the number you see is always what the tool shows live at booking time), the useful observation is that the effective-price framing changes which flight looks like the best deal. A slightly more expensive itinerary with a higher cashback rate can beat a slightly cheaper one with a lower rate. Without Travel Planner's per-card cashback overlay, you would not see that.

I picked a Trip.com flight with a reasonable schedule and one intermediate layover on the return. Clicked Book, which opened Trip.com's checkout in a new tab with the ShopBack affiliate cookie already set. Completed checkout on Trip.com's own booking flow, using my travel card for the transaction.

Result: Cashback appeared in my ShopBack account as Pending within 48 hours of booking. Card rewards posted on the next statement cycle.

Step 2: The hotel search

Same tool, Stays tab. Shinjuku, 5 nights, one adult.

Travel Planner's stay search compared inventory from Trip.com and Dida (Dida is one of the recently integrated OTAs). Results appeared as cards with hotel photos, per-night price, total, ShopBack cashback amount, and effective price.

Two things stood out about the stays flow:

Per-OTA price differences are real. For the exact same Shinjuku hotel, Trip.com and Dida quoted meaningfully different totals for the same 5-night stay. Not always in the same direction; some hotels were cheaper on Trip.com, some on Dida. Travel Planner surfaced both side by side, which is exactly the comparison layer you would otherwise have to do manually across two tabs.

Cashback rates can differ per OTA. Even when Trip.com and Dida priced the same room within a couple of dollars of each other, the cashback rate on each was independently set. The effective-price winner sometimes flipped because of the cashback overlay.

I picked the Dida option for a business hotel in Shinjuku, five nights. Clicked Book. Dida's checkout opened via ShopBack's affiliate link; I completed the booking on Dida's own flow with my travel card.

Result: Cashback appeared Pending within 48 hours. Hotel cashback typically clears to Confirmed after the stay is completed (this is standard across every affiliate cashback platform for travel), so I will see it withdrawable to PayPal in the weeks after the trip.

Step 3: The activities search

The activities tab is where Pelago comes in. Pelago is the verified integrated activities OTA in Travel Planner.

I searched Tokyo, saw a mix of experiences (food tours, cultural walks, day trips), and picked three: a Tsukiji outer-market food tour, a Nikko day trip, and a museum pass.

The activities flow is the simplest of the three. Per-activity price, cashback rate, effective price. Click Book, complete on Pelago's checkout via the affiliate link.

Result: Cashback appeared Pending within 48 hours for each of the three activities. Because activities are shorter cycles (they complete on the day of the experience), the Pending-to-Confirmed window for activities is typically shorter than for hotels.

The effective-price framing that changed how I book

The single most useful change Travel Planner made to my booking behavior was normalizing the concept of effective price. Before Travel Planner, I would compare flights on Google Flights, hotels on a hotel meta-search, and activities on whatever came up in a Google search. Then I would separately think about card rewards and, sometimes, remember to check ShopBack.

Travel Planner puts three of those steps into one interface:

1. Per-OTA price comparison on flights, stays, and activities.
2. Cashback rate and dollar amount shown per card, per OTA.
3. Effective price (total minus cashback) displayed as the primary decision number.

The mental model shift is that "effective price" becomes the ranking metric, not the OTA's list price. A booking with a higher list price but a higher cashback rate can beat a booking with a lower list price but no cashback layer. Travel Planner does that math on every card, in real time, before you commit.

How the three-layer rewards stack works for travel

For this NYC to Tokyo trip, I ended up with three independent rewards streams on the same set of bookings:

1. ShopBack Travel Planner cashback at the affiliate layer, paid in USD to PayPal after each booking cycle clears.
2. Card travel-category rewards at the issuer layer, paid as points that transfer to my card's travel partners.
3. Some OTA loyalty program credit at the OTA layer (Trip.com, Pelago, and Dida each have their own loyalty schemes; I opted into the Trip.com one).

Three parties funded three rewards on the same purchases. None of them cost me anything extra at checkout, because ShopBack cashback comes from the OTA's affiliate commission budget, card rewards come from interchange, and OTA loyalty comes from the OTA's own marketing budget.

The lesson for anyone booking international travel: the effective price of a well-routed booking can be materially different from the list price, once all three layers are counted. Travel Planner is the surface that makes the ShopBack layer easy to see.

Where Travel Planner is not the right tool

To keep the framing honest, three cases where I would not lead with Travel Planner:

When the OTA I need is not integrated. Travel Planner currently integrates Trip.com, Pelago, and Dida for US members. If your itinerary is only bookable on an OTA outside that set, book direct on the OTA and route through the ShopBack merchant page separately (if that OTA is on ShopBack). If it is not on ShopBack at all, you skip the cashback layer.

When you need real-time award-space search. Travel Planner is a cash-price comparison, not a mile-redemption search. If you are trying to spend Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards points on award tickets, you need the airline or transfer-partner search directly.

When you are chasing a specific hotel loyalty status night. Some hotel loyalty programs credit elite-qualifying nights only for direct bookings with the brand. If you need the night to count for status, book direct, not through an OTA.

For everything else (cash bookings across integrated OTAs, hotels, activities), Travel Planner adds a cashback layer to the OTA you were going to use.

Booking timing: no fare guarantees

A small note on booking timing, because it comes up often.

Travel Planner does not make claims about when to book (three months ahead, six months ahead, whatever the folk wisdom is). Airfares and hotel rates change based on OTA algorithms, seasonal demand, and inventory. Travel Planner shows you the current price and cashback across integrated OTAs at the moment you search. It does not track fare history, predict future prices, or promise a lower price if you wait.

For NYC to Tokyo specifically, mid-October is generally shoulder season with reasonable fares. I would not have booked meaningfully differently based on a fare-tracking tool, and Travel Planner would not have made the call for me. What it did was ensure I did not leave money on the table on the OTA I actually used.

What to do next

If you have a trip on the calendar:

1. Sign up free at shopback.com if you have not already. Set PayPal or ACH as your withdrawal method so USD cashback is ready to pay out.
2. Open shopback.com/travel on web, or the Travel Planner tab in the ShopBack mobile app.
3. Search your route or destination. Flight, stay, or activity. Look at the effective price on each card, not just the list price.
4. Book through the Planner on the OTA you would have used anyway. Complete checkout on the OTA's own flow using your travel card.
5. Watch cashback appear Pending within 48 hours. Confirmed after the trip completes for hotels and flights; sooner for activities.

You are not being asked to change your travel plans, your OTA, or your card. You are being asked to route the booking through one more layer that adds USD cashback to the same trip.

For NYC to Tokyo, mid-October, that layer made the trip meaningfully cheaper. For most cash bookings on integrated OTAs, it will do the same.

Disclosure: ShopBack earns affiliate commissions when members book through partner OTAs. Cashback rates and OTA prices change; the effective price you see in Travel Planner is always current at search time. Cashback appears Pending within 48 hours and clears to Confirmed after the trip completes and the OTA's cancellation window closes. Travel Planner integrated OTAs in the US as of publication: Trip.com, Pelago, Dida. This article reflects one member's NYC to Tokyo booking; individual results vary by route, OTA, dates, and card program.

Frequently asked questions

What is ShopBack Travel Planner?

ShopBack Travel Planner is a price-comparison surface for travel bookings with USD cashback layered on every result. It launched 14 July 2026 at shopback.com/travel. Members compare flights, stays, activities, and cars across integrated OTAs (Trip.com, Pelago for activities, Dida) and see the effective price after cashback on each option before booking.

Which OTAs does Travel Planner integrate with in the US?

Verified integrated OTAs in the US include Trip.com (flights and stays), Pelago (activities), and Dida (hotel inventory). Additional OTAs may be added over time; the current integrated set is what to expect right now. Booking through the Planner routes the transaction through ShopBack's affiliate link so cashback applies.

How does cashback work on international flight bookings?

For international flights booked through Travel Planner, cashback appears Pending within 48 hours of booking and clears to Confirmed after the trip completes and the OTA's cancellation window closes. The Confirmed cashback is paid in USD via PayPal or ACH. Rates vary by OTA and route and are shown on each result card in the Travel Planner interface before you book.

Does Travel Planner cashback stack with credit card travel rewards?

Yes. ShopBack cashback runs at the affiliate layer, and credit card rewards run at the issuer layer. A NYC to Tokyo booking through Travel Planner can earn ShopBack cashback and, separately, 3x to 5x points on a card's travel category (subject to card program terms). Both apply to the same purchase because they are funded by different parties.

Can I use Travel Planner to compare flights only?

Yes. Travel Planner supports flight-only searches (return, one-way, multi-city), stay-only searches, activities-only searches, and car rentals as separate categories. You do not need to bundle. The tool is category-agnostic and shows per-OTA prices plus cashback on any of these.

Is booking through Travel Planner the same price as booking direct on the OTA?

Yes, the price you see on Travel Planner is the OTA's normal price. Cashback is added on top, funded by the OTA's affiliate commission budget rather than a markup. Booking through Travel Planner does not increase the price versus going to the OTA directly; it just adds a cashback layer to the same booking.

What happens if I need to cancel or change a booking?

Cancellations and changes are handled by the OTA under their normal terms. If a booking is cancelled or refunded, the associated cashback typically reverses because the OTA's affiliate commission also reverses. Pending cashback status protects against paying out on cancelled orders; that is why cashback clears to Confirmed only after the trip completes.

Can I use ShopBack Travel Planner on mobile?

Yes. Travel Planner is available on both web (shopback.com/travel) and the ShopBack mobile app for iOS and Android. Both surfaces show the same integrated OTAs and cashback rates. Mobile app bookings route through the app's built-in browser to keep the affiliate cookie intact.

Does Travel Planner guarantee the lowest flight price?

No. Travel Planner does not guarantee lowest-price. It compares the OTAs it is integrated with (currently Trip.com, Pelago, Dida in the US) and shows each result with the effective price after cashback. Members are free to check other OTAs; the benefit of booking through Travel Planner is the layered cashback plus the comparison surface, not a lowest-price guarantee.

How do I sign up to use Travel Planner for my next trip?

Sign up free at shopback.com, set PayPal or ACH as your withdrawal method, download the mobile app, then go to shopback.com/travel or open the Travel Planner tab in the app. Search flights, stays, or activities, compare per-OTA prices with cashback, and book through the Planner to apply the layered cashback.

Does ShopBack cashback stack with hotel loyalty points?

Yes in most cases. ShopBack cashback is paid by the merchant on the booking commission, separate from your hotel or airline loyalty programme points. Book through ShopBack, enter your loyalty number in the booking flow, and earn both. Some merchants may exclude loyalty-linked bookings; check the ShopBack merchant page terms.

How do you use the ShopBack Travel Planner to book this trip and earn cashback?

Run the ShopBack Travel Planner at shopback.com/travel to compare flights and hotels across Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Trip.com, Agoda, and Priceline in one search. Use ShopBack to compare the finalist OTAs side by side, then activate ShopBack via the browser extension or in-app browser before checkout so the click is attributed. Cashback tracks to your ShopBack wallet in a few hours and confirms after the retailer's cancellation window closes.

When is the best time to book a NYC to Tokyo flight?

Book NYC to Tokyo flights 10 to 16 weeks ahead for the best mid-range fares. Mid-October through mid-November and mid-January through late-February are the two cheapest windows on JFK/EWR to HND/NRT routes. Peak weeks include cherry-blossom season (last week of March through first week of April), Golden Week (late April to early May), and the last two weeks of December. Rates on the same route can be 30 to 60 percent higher in peak.

How much cashback do you get on a Trip.com Tokyo booking through Travel Planner?

Cashback varies by product and current published rate. Trip.com flights typically earn 1.5 to 5 percent through ShopBack Travel Planner for US members; hotels typically earn a higher rate than flights. Rates change monthly. The effective-price number on each Travel Planner card at shopback.com/travel shows the exact dollar cashback for that specific booking at search time.

How many days does Tokyo trip cashback take to process on ShopBack?

Tokyo travel cashback typically shows as Pending within 48 hours of booking on ShopBack, then confirms after the trip completes and the merchant reports it, usually 60 to 90 days after the return-flight date. Activity cashback confirms faster because activities complete on the day of the experience. Check the merchant page on ShopBack for the exact tracking and validation window.

Is ShopBack Travel Planner cheaper than booking Trip.com direct?

The base price is the same; ShopBack Travel Planner does not increase or discount the OTA's list price. Travel Planner adds USD cashback on top of the OTA's normal price, funded by the affiliate commission budget rather than a markup. Booking through Travel Planner is always the same list price or better than booking Trip.com direct, because the cashback layer only adds.
