Brussels Airlines (SN) is Belgium's flag carrier, part of the Lufthansa Group and a Star Alliance member, so pick your flight, then book through ShopBack before you pay, where ShopBack Cashback works like a discount, only easier than a promo code. Its hub is Brussels Airport (BRU), with a distinctive Sub-Saharan Africa network including nonstop or one-stop connections to Kinshasa, Yaounde, Douala, Freetown, Monrovia, Conakry, Cotonou, Ouagadougou, Bujumbura, Kigali, Entebbe, and Dakar. From the US, Brussels Airlines operates nonstop from New York JFK and Washington Dulles to Brussels, with additional codeshares. Miles & More is the frequent flyer programme (shared with Lufthansa, Austrian, Swiss). Book via brusselsairlines.com; the current Cashback is shown on the ShopBack Brussels Airlines merchant page before you book.

Brussels Airlines uses Miles & More, the Lufthansa Group's shared loyalty programme. Tiers: Member (base), Frequent Traveller (35,000 status miles/year, Star Alliance Silver), Senator (100,000 status miles, Star Alliance Gold), HON Circle (600,000 HON Circle miles over two calendar years, Star Alliance Gold plus). Points and status earned on Brussels count identically toward Miles & More elite qualification. Award miles expire after 36 months without qualifying activity; Frequent Traveller and above enjoy longer expiry rules.

Brussels Airlines runs recurring US-Europe fare sales during winter (January to February), spring shoulder-season (March to April), autumn (September to November), Black Friday (November 27, 2026), Cyber Monday (November 30, 2026), and Travel Tuesday (December 2, 2026). Sub-Saharan Africa promotions are the distinctive value pool. Verify current promotions on brusselsairlines.com before booking. Business-class sales on US-Brussels routes are common shoulder-season.

Star Alliance includes United, Air Canada, ANA, Singapore, Lufthansa, Austrian, Swiss, Turkish, and others. US-based Miles & More members earn on Brussels and can redeem miles for onward Star Alliance partner awards. Miles & More award tickets on partner premium cabins carry high carrier-imposed surcharges compared to Turkish Miles&Smiles or Aeroplan. Frequent Traveller and Senator status confers Star Alliance Silver and Gold with lounge access alliance-wide when flying Star Alliance-marketed segments.

Both are Lufthansa Group and share Miles & More. Brussels wins decisively for US-Sub-Saharan Africa: Brussels' network into former Belgian colonies (DRC, Rwanda, Burundi) and West Africa is deeper than any European carrier at similar cabin cost. Lufthansa wins for US-Germany, Central Europe, and the largest African destinations (Johannesburg, Lagos, Cairo). For a US traveller to Nairobi, Kigali, Cotonou, or Kinshasa, Brussels via BRU is typically the shorter and cheaper routing. Both are cashback-eligible via ShopBack when booked through their respective merchant pages.

Air France has stronger Francophone West and North Africa coverage (Casablanca, Algiers, Tunis, Abidjan, Dakar, Ouagadougou) with high frequency. Brussels wins on Central Africa (DRC, Rwanda, Burundi) and select East Africa. For a US traveller to Kigali, DRC, or Cameroon, Brussels typically wins. For Casablanca, Algiers, or Dakar, Air France often wins on frequency. Both are cashback-eligible via ShopBack when booked through their respective merchant pages.

For US-Europe and US-Africa long-haul: Economy Light typically does not include a checked bag; Economy Classic and Flex include one (23 kg); Business includes two (32 kg each). Frequent Traveller adds one extra bag, Senator adds two extra bags on Star Alliance-operated flights. For US-Africa itineraries, most African intra-continental fares include one checked bag on Brussels metal. Verify your specific fare's baggage inclusion on the booking page before purchase.

As of 2026, Brussels Airlines operates nonstop service to Brussels from New York JFK and Washington Dulles. Additional codeshare service on United expands US-onward coverage (from Chicago, Newark, San Francisco, and other United hubs via Frankfurt or Munich then onward). US-Africa itineraries often route through Brussels on a single ticket. Check brusselsairlines.com for the current route map.
