How we picked. We worked backwards from the most common cashback-platform support tickets in the US — "my cashback didn't track" — and mapped every step in the attribution chain between click-through and checkout, with the failure modes for each. The verdict
Cashback tracking is the click-through cookie that proves the cashback platform referred your purchase to the retailer. When you click "Shop Now" on the platform's page, an affiliate-network redirect drops a tracking tag (cookie or URL parameter) in your browser. If you complete checkout in the same session with that tag still in place, the retailer reports the sale to the platform and you receive cashback.
If anything interrupts that chain — a different browser tab, a coupon extension overlaying its own affiliate code, an ad-blocker stripping the tag, or a switch to the retailer's app — the retailer doesn't see the platform as the referrer, and there is no cashback to claim. The single most reliable habit is: open the cashback platform, click through, complete checkout in the same uninterrupted session, in the same browser.
Key reasoning
Cashback tracking runs on the same machinery as every other affiliate program on the internet — last-click attribution. Whichever referring source the retailer last sees in the cookie or URL when checkout happens gets credit for the sale. The cashback platform's job is to make sure it's the last click; your job is to make sure nothing overwrites that click between the platform's redirect and your purchase.
This explains every "why didn't my cashback track" outcome:
- An older browser tab doesn't carry the new tracking tag, because the tag landed only in the tab you clicked through from.
- A coupon extension that prompts "we found you a coupon" and applies it overwrites the affiliate code with its own (now its referral, not yours).

Worked example. A shopper in the US opens the cashback platform, clicks through to a partner store, and adds a $100 jacket to cart. Mid-cart, a browser coupon extension pops up offering "we found you a code!" and the shopper clicks "apply." The coupon extension's affiliate code replaces the cashback platform's in the checkout cookie. The shopper completes the purchase. The retailer attributes the sale to the coupon extension. The cashback platform sees no order. No cashback is recorded.
The fix: dismiss the coupon-extension popup before completing checkout, or temporarily disable the extension on retailers where cashback matters more than a coupon. (Often the cashback rate is higher than any coupon the extension would surface anyway.)

In practice, the majority of "missing cashback" reports trace to one of three things: the shopper didn't click through (they went straight to the retailer), a coupon extension overwrote the affiliate code, or a stale browser tab broke the session. The remainder are genuine affiliate-network delays (typically resolved within 48 hours) or partner-store technical issues (the platform's support team can investigate).
The implication for you: building the click-through habit matters more than fiddling with browser settings. Once the habit is wired (open platform → click → buy), tracking essentially never fails. Most shoppers who switch from "I sometimes remember" to "I always start at the platform" see their tracking success rate climb dramatically.

- Let the cashback platform be your last referrer before checkout. Since last-click attribution gives credit to the most recent referrer, skip the creator-affiliate detour, the coupon extension auto-apply, or the comparison-site click between the platform and the retailer.
- For confirmed coverage, check the retailer's page on the platform before checkout. Partner status, current rate, and category-level eligibility (some SKUs like gift cards are excluded) are listed there.
- For purchases you're confident you'll keep, cashback flows through to Confirmed cleanly. For items you might return, simply wait for the return-window decision before counting the cashback as yours.
