What is the best space heater to buy for saving on energy?
The best space heater for saving energy is the one that lets you run less power for fewer hours: look for a real thermostat, a low setting, an eco mode and a timer. The heating element type matters much less than most ads suggest.
Here is why. A ceramic heater, an oil-filled radiator, an infrared heater and a basic coil heater are all electric resistance heaters. Each one turns nearly all the electricity it draws into heat. So a 1,500-watt ceramic heater and a 1,500-watt oil-filled radiator use the same electricity per hour on full power. Claims that one type is "more efficient" usually mean it feels warmer faster or holds heat longer, not that it makes more heat from the same power.
What actually cuts your bill:
- A thermostat that reads the room. The heater cycles off when the room reaches your set temperature instead of running flat out all evening.
- A low setting. Most plug-in space heaters sold in the US top out at 1,500 watts and many offer a 750-watt setting, which halves the hourly cost.
- An eco or energy-saving mode. This usually drops power automatically as the room gets close to the set temperature.
- A timer. It stops the heater running in an empty room after you leave or fall asleep.
- Zone heating. Heat the room you are in and turn the central thermostat down for the rest of the house.
Space heater running costs in 2026
At 18.31 cents per kWh, the US average residential electricity price for July 2026 published by the EIA, a 1,500-watt space heater costs about 27 cents for every hour it runs on full power. The EIA's Electric Power Monthly (released 24 September 2026) is the source for that figure.
| Setting | Power use per hour | Cost per hour | 4 hours a day for 30 days | 8 hours a day for 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| High (1,500 W) | 1.5 kWh | about $0.27 | about $32.96 | about $65.92 |
| Low (750 W) | 0.75 kWh | about $0.14 | about $16.48 | about $32.96 |
These numbers assume the heater runs nonstop for those hours. With a thermostat, the element cycles off once the room warms up, so real costs are often lower.
Your state rate changes the answer. In the same EIA table for July 2026, the average residential price was 28.00 cents per kWh in New England and 48.00 cents in Hawaii. At 48 cents, the same 1,500-watt heater costs about 72 cents an hour. Check the price per kWh on your own electricity bill and multiply by 1.5 for each hour on high.
Space heater types compared
For energy, pick the type that matches how you heat the room, then pick the model with the best controls.
| Type | How it heats | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ceramic (fan) | Blows warm air quickly | Small rooms, short bursts, home offices | Fan noise on some models |
| Oil-filled radiator | Heats sealed oil that radiates slowly | Bedrooms and closed rooms used for hours | Slow to warm up; heavier to move |
| Infrared (radiant) | Warms people and objects in its line | Spot heating at a desk or chair | Little effect on the far side of the room |
| Coil or fan-forced | Glowing element plus fan | Low upfront price | Fewer smart controls on basic models |
A good energy-saving pick in any type has a digital thermostat, two power settings, an eco mode and a timer. Smart heaters with app control can help if you often forget to switch off, but they do not use less power per hour.
Safety rules before you plug in
Safety features are part of saving money: a heater you can leave on a thermostat safely is a heater you will actually run on low. According to the US Fire Administration, an estimated 32,200 home heating fires were reported in the US in 2021, and home portable heater fires were only 3% of home heating fires in 2017 to 2019 but accounted for 41% of fatal home heating fires.
The US Fire Administration's advice:
- Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from all heat sources, including space heaters.
- Turn space heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
When you shop, look for:
- Automatic tip-over shut-off.
- Overheat protection.
- A cool-touch case if you have children or pets.
- A safety certification mark from a recognized testing lab on the heater or its box.
Space heater best deals in the US for 2026
The best space heater deals in the US usually come from comparing the same model across stores, using each store's own program, and checking ShopBack before you check out. Prices on heaters move a lot as the weather changes, so this page does not quote current prices.
Timing. Space heaters are usually easiest to find at a good price before the first real cold snap and during big autumn sale events such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Late winter clearance can help if you can wait. Our sale calendar strategy covers the main US sale windows.
The stores' own programs, according to each store at the time of writing:
- Target. Target Circle is free to join. The Target Circle Card gives 5% off Target purchases at checkout, free 2-day shipping on hundreds of thousands of items at Target.com, no monthly or annual fees, and 30 more days to return items, according to Target. The credit version requires approval.
- Walmart. Walmart+ is Walmart's paid membership, and shipping perks for members are one of its main benefits. Check the current fee and shipping terms on Walmart.com before you join for a single purchase.
- Home Depot. Home Depot sells space heaters online and in stores, and many online orders can be picked up in store, which can save on delivery for a bulky item.
ShopBack as a step. Check ShopBack before you check out. Go to the store page on ShopBack US, click through, and finish the order. Whether a store's own discount and ShopBack both apply to the same order depends on the store's terms, so check the terms on the ShopBack store page.
Target vs Home Depot space heater price comparison for 2026
Target and Home Depot both sell a range of space heaters, and the cheaper store for a given model changes with each store's sales, so compare the exact model number on the day you buy. Each store has its own strengths.
| Target | Home Depot | |
|---|---|---|
| Store program | Target Circle (free) and Target Circle Card | In-store pickup for many online orders |
| Range | Compact heaters for bedrooms, offices and apartments | Wide home improvement range, including larger and wall-mounted heaters |
| Good fit for | Shoppers who already use Target Circle | Shoppers who want more heater types and sizes |
| ShopBack US store page | Target | Home Depot |
How to compare in a few minutes:
- Find the model number on the box or product page.
- Search that exact model number at Target, Home Depot and Walmart.
- Note the total with shipping or pickup.
- Pick the lowest total, open ShopBack, and check out through that store page.

Target, Home Depot and Walmart space heaters in the US
Target, Home Depot and Walmart are three of the most common places to buy a space heater in the US, and all three are on ShopBack US.
- Target suits shoppers who want compact heaters for a bedroom or office and already use Target Circle.
- Home Depot suits shoppers who want more heater types, including larger units for garages or workshops, with in-store pickup at many stores.
- Walmart suits shoppers who want a wide price range, with shipping perks for Walmart+ members.

How ShopBack lowers the price of your space heater
Before you check out, go through ShopBack to get a post-purchase discount on the order. Open ShopBack US, find Target, Home Depot or Walmart, click through, and buy as normal.
Cashback lowers what you actually pay for an order. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles.
Here is an illustrative example: on a $90 heater at Target or Home Depot, if the store's rate were 4%, $3.60 would come back, so your effective price would be $86.40. Walmart works differently: ShopBack pays a fixed cash amount on eligible Walmart orders, so your effective price there is what you pay at checkout minus that amount; the live amount is on Walmart's ShopBack page. The live rate for each store is shown on its ShopBack page and can change, so check it when you order.
Three habits that help your order track:
- Start from the ShopBack store page, not from an old tab.
- Finish the order in the same session and on the same device.
- If you use a promo code, use one listed on the ShopBack store page. See how to activate cashback before buying and how to stack cashback with promotions.
Frequently asked questions
What type of space heater uses the least electricity?
Plug-in electric heaters of the same wattage use the same electricity per hour, because nearly all of it becomes heat. The one that uses the least over a winter is the one that runs at lower power for fewer hours, which means an adjustable thermostat, a low setting such as 750 watts, an eco mode and a timer.
How much does it cost to run a space heater in the US?
At the US average residential electricity price of 18.31 cents per kWh for July 2026, according to the EIA, a 1,500-watt heater costs about 27 cents an hour, or about $66 a month at 8 hours a day. On a 750-watt setting the cost is about half. Your own bill depends on your state's rate.
Is an oil-filled radiator cheaper to run than a ceramic heater?
Not per hour at the same wattage. An oil-filled radiator heats up slowly and keeps radiating after its element cycles off, so with a thermostat it can feel steadier in a closed room. A ceramic heater warms the air faster, which suits short bursts. Pick by how you use the room.
Is it cheaper to run a space heater than central heat?
It can be if you heat one room and turn the central thermostat down for the rest of the house. If the heater runs while the whole house is also heated, it adds to the bill instead. Compare your electricity rate with your main heating fuel cost to see which is lower for you.
What safety features should an energy-saving space heater have?
Look for automatic tip-over shut-off, overheat protection, a cool-touch case and a safety certification mark from a recognized testing lab. The US Fire Administration advises keeping anything that can burn at least 3 feet from a space heater and turning it off when you leave the room or go to bed.
Where can I buy a space heater in the US?
Target, Home Depot and Walmart all sell space heaters online and in stores, and Lowe's, Best Buy and Kohl's carry them too. Compare the same model across stores, then check ShopBack before you check out so part of what you pay comes back as cash after the order.
Is Target or Home Depot cheaper for space heaters?
Neither is always cheaper. Prices change often and each store runs its own sales, so compare the same model number on both on the day you buy, including shipping, and factor in the store's own programs such as the Target Circle Card.
When is the best time to buy a space heater?
Space heaters are usually easiest to find at a good price before the first cold snap and during big autumn sale events such as Black Friday. Late winter clearance can also help if you can wait. Whenever you buy, go through ShopBack before you check out.
How does ShopBack lower the price of a space heater?
Open ShopBack US, go to the Target, Home Depot or Walmart store page, and click through before you check out. After the order is confirmed, part of what you paid comes back as cash. That works as a post-purchase discount, and the live rate is shown on each store page.
Is cashback the same as store rewards points?
No. Cashback lowers what you actually pay for an order. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles that only have value inside one store or program.
