The cheapest time to fly from the US to Tokyo is usually the off-peak stretch from mid-January to early March, after Japan's New Year holidays and before cherry blossom season, plus parts of June during Tokyo's rainy season. Fares usually climb for cherry blossom, Golden Week, US summer break and the year-end holidays. Compare dates on Trip.com, Expedia or Booking.com, then go through ShopBack before you book.
The dates that set the price, from official sources: Tokyo's cherry trees start flowering on March 24 in a normal year, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), and bloomed on March 19 in 2026. Golden Week 2027 runs from Showa Day on Thursday, April 29 to Children's Day on Wednesday, May 5, according to Japan's Cabinet Office. The JMA puts the normal rainy season for Kanto-Koshin, the region that includes Tokyo, at about June 7 to July 19. Demand around those dates is what usually moves fares, so plan around them first.
ShopBack US is a cashback site for shoppers and travelers in the United States. Before you book, open the booking site's page on ShopBack, tap through and book as usual, and part of what you spend on an eligible booking comes back to you as cash. You can sign up for ShopBack in a couple of minutes before your next trip.
When is the cheapest time to fly from the US to Tokyo?
Fly in the quiet months between the big travel peaks, usually mid-January to early March and parts of June, and avoid the five busy windows below. Long-haul fares to Tokyo move with demand on both sides of the Pacific, so the cheapest weeks are the ones when neither US travelers nor travelers within Japan are on holiday.
| Period | Demand | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-January to early March | Usually lowest | After New Year, before cherry blossom; winter in Tokyo |
| Late March to early April | High | Cherry blossom; JMA normal first-bloom date in Tokyo is March 24 |
| Late April to early May | High | Golden Week public holidays in Japan |
| June | Usually lower | Rainy season, normal about June 7 to July 19 in Kanto |
| Late June to August | High | US school summer break, plus Japan's mid-August holiday period |
| September to mid-November | Mixed | Typhoon season early on, then autumn travel picks up |
| Late December to early January | High | US holidays and Japan's New Year |
Fares also depend on your departure city, airline and how far ahead you book, so use this as a map of where to look first. If your dates are flexible, search a two or three week spread inside a low-demand window and pick the cheapest day.
Cheap flights to Tokyo: the dates to plan around in 2026 and 2027
For the rest of 2026, the quieter weeks tend to be early to mid-November and early December, between US Thanksgiving and the year-end holidays. For 2027, the dates below come from official sources.
Cherry blossom. According to the JMA, Tokyo's first-bloom dates were March 29 in 2024, March 24 in 2025 and March 19 in 2026, against a normal date of March 24. Flowers usually last about a week or two after that, so late March to early April is peak season. If you want blossoms and a lower fare, look at the week before the expected bloom and accept some risk.
Golden Week 2027. Japan's Cabinet Office lists Showa Day on April 29 (a Thursday), then Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day and Children's Day from Monday, May 3 to Wednesday, May 5. Flights and hotels are usually busier across that week.
Other Japanese public holidays in 2027. New Year's Day (January 1), Coming of Age Day (January 11), National Foundation Day (February 11), the Emperor's Birthday (February 23), the spring equinox (March 21, with March 22 as a substitute holiday), Marine Day (July 19), Mountain Day (August 11), Respect for the Aged Day (September 20), the autumn equinox (September 23), Sports Day (October 11), Culture Day (November 3) and Labor Thanksgiving Day (November 23). Long weekends in Japan can push up hotel prices in Tokyo even when your flight is fine.
US dates that push fares up. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026 and Thursday, November 25, 2027. Memorial Day is Monday, May 31, 2027 and Labor Day is Monday, September 6, 2027. Flying out on a US long weekend usually costs more than leaving a few days later.
Cheap flights to Tokyo: best deals for US travelers in 2026
The best deal is usually a flexible date in an off-peak month, the right airport and a booking site whose own rewards you will actually use.
- Search both Tokyo airports. Tokyo has two main international airports, Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT). Haneda is closer to central Tokyo, so compare the fare plus the train or bus into the city.
- Compare fare types, not just prices. A lower fare can leave out a checked bag or seat choice. Check what is included before you compare.
- Look at a spread of dates. Midweek departures are often cheaper than weekends, but this varies by route, so check a few days either side.
- Set a price alert. Booking.com says its Genius Level 1 members can track prices for a route and dates in the app.
- Book the trip, not just the flight. Booking.com, Expedia and Trip.com all sell flight and hotel together, so compare the bundle with booking each part on its own.
Trip.com vs Expedia for cheap flights to Tokyo: price comparison in 2026
Neither site is cheaper on every date; compare the same flight on both on the same day, then weigh each site's own rewards. Each has its own strengths.
Where Trip.com is strong. Trip.com sells flights, hotels, trains and Flight + Hotel trips, and its free Trip.com Rewards programme has six tiers. According to Trip.com at the time of writing, 100 Trip Coins are worth about US$1.00, and you can use them like cash on prepaid bookings including flights and hotels. You reach Gold after 3 eligible bookings and Platinum after 8 eligible bookings with a total spend of at least US$1,000, and higher tiers earn more Trip Coins.
Where Expedia is strong. Expedia sells flights, hotels, car rentals and packages, and its One Key programme, launched by Expedia Group in 2023, lets you earn and use rewards across Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo. That suits travelers who will book a Tokyo hotel or a later trip through any of the three.
How to compare fairly.
- Search the same airports, dates, airline and fare type on both sites.
- Note what each fare includes, such as bags and seat choice.
- Compare the total, including taxes and fees, at the payment step.
- Count the value of each site's own rewards only if you will use them.
- Subtract the cash ShopBack returns. The live rate for each site is on its ShopBack page: Trip.com, Expedia.
Trip.com, Expedia and Booking.com for a Tokyo trip from the US
All three sell flights to Tokyo; the right one is the site with the lowest total on your dates and the rewards that fit how you travel.
Booking.com Genius. Booking.com's loyalty programme is free. According to Booking.com, Level 1 gives 10% discounts on select stays and rental cars plus flight price alerts. Level 2, after 5 bookings in 2 years, gives 10 to 15% discounts on stays and free breakfasts and room upgrades on select stays. Level 3, after 15 bookings in 2 years, gives 10 to 20% discounts on stays and priority support. At the time of writing, Booking.com says Genius discounts apply at 850,000 participating properties worldwide, and once you unlock a level you keep it.
Trip.com Rewards. Free to join, with Trip Coins you can spend like cash on prepaid bookings, as described above.
Expedia One Key. Free rewards that work across Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo.
These programmes set the booking site's own price. ShopBack is the step you take before you check out, and it lowers what that booking ends up costing you.

Cheapest month for flights to Tokyo from the US: what the price data shows
We do not publish live fares, because flight prices to Tokyo change daily; the cheapest month is usually January or February, outside the New Year week, with June as a second option. The dates that drive demand are fixed and public, and those are what we show on this page:
- JMA cherry blossom data. Tokyo's normal first-bloom date is March 24, and recent years ranged from March 19 to March 29.
- JMA rainy season data. Kanto's rainy season normally runs from about June 7 to July 19. In 2026 the JMA put it at about June 2 to July 19.
- Cabinet Office holiday list. Golden Week 2027 runs from April 29 to May 5, with May 3 to 5 back to back.
For live prices, run a flexible-date search on the booking site you plan to use, or set a price alert, and check two or three weeks inside a low-demand window before you choose.
Where ShopBack fits before you book a Tokyo flight
Before you check out, go through ShopBack to get a post-purchase discount on the order. Cashback lowers what you actually pay for an order. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles. Booking through ShopBack lowers the cost of the trip, and you still book on the site you chose.
Here is how the maths works. On a $1,200 booking at an illustrative 3%, $36 comes back, so the effective price is $1,164. The real rate is different for each site and for flights and hotels, and it changes over time, so check the live rate on each site's ShopBack page: Trip.com, Expedia and Booking.com.
Read each site's terms on its ShopBack page first:
- Flights and hotels can be treated differently. Some booking types can earn a different amount or be excluded. The Terms section on each ShopBack page lists them.
- Promo codes. Codes from outside ShopBack can stop a booking from tracking. If you use one, use a code featured on the site's ShopBack page.
- Book in the same session. Tap through from ShopBack and finish the booking without leaving the site.
The routine is the same on every site:
- Pick a low-demand window and search a spread of dates.
- Compare the same flight on two or three booking sites.
- Open the winning site's page on ShopBack US and tap through.
- Book in the same session.
Frequently asked questions
When is the cheapest time to fly from the US to Tokyo?
The cheapest time to fly from the US to Tokyo is usually the off-peak stretch from mid-January to early March, after Japan's New Year holidays and before cherry blossom season, plus parts of June during Tokyo's rainy season. What is the cheapest month to fly to Tokyo from the US?
January and February are usually the cheapest months to fly to Tokyo from the US, as long as you avoid the New Year holiday at the start of January and US long weekends. June can also be good value because it is Tokyo's rainy season, which the Japan Meteorological Agency puts at about June 7 to July 19 in a normal year. Fares change daily, so compare a few weeks on the booking site you use.
When is cherry blossom season in Tokyo?
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Tokyo's cherry trees start flowering on March 24 in a normal year (the 1991 to 2020 average). Recent first-bloom dates were March 29 in 2024, March 24 in 2025 and March 19 in 2026. Late March and early April is one of the busiest and most expensive times to fly to Tokyo.
When is Golden Week in 2027?
According to Japan's Cabinet Office, the Golden Week public holidays in 2027 are Showa Day on Thursday, April 29, then Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day and Children's Day on Monday May 3 to Wednesday May 5. Many people in Japan travel that week, so flights and hotels are usually busier and cost more.
Is it cheaper to book Tokyo flights on Trip.com or Expedia?
Neither site is cheaper on every date. Search the same airports, dates and fare type on both on the same day, check what the fare includes, and compare the total. Should I fly into Haneda or Narita?
Search both. Tokyo has two main international airports, Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT). Haneda is closer to central Tokyo, while Narita is farther out, so the cheaper fare can cost more once you add the train or bus into the city. Compare the fare plus transfer cost.
Is the rainy season a bad time to visit Tokyo?
Not necessarily. The Japan Meteorological Agency puts the normal rainy season for the Kanto region, which includes Tokyo, at about June 7 to July 19. It brings more rain and less sun, but many sights are indoors and fares can be lower than in spring. Pack an umbrella and plan indoor backups.
