For most US families visiting San Diego in 2026, Mission Bay is the easiest place to stay. Mission Bay Park covers 4,235 acres, about 54% of it water, with SeaWorld San Diego inside and calm bay beaches for small children. Pick Coronado for a quieter beach town, La Jolla for tide pools, or Downtown and Old Town for the zoo without a car. Then compare the total price, including the city's 11.75% to 13.75% hotel tax, on Booking.com, Vrbo and Hotels.com.
ShopBack US is a cashback site for shoppers and travellers in the United States. The last step before you book flights or hotels is to open ShopBack, so you pay less on the same booking. You can sign up for ShopBack in a couple of minutes and start your San Diego booking from the store page.
How we picked. We compared San Diego's main family bases on what families ask about most: beach access, distance to the big attractions, room space and total cost. Tax figures come from the City of San Diego Treasurer, fee rules from the Federal Trade Commission, event dates from Comic-Con International, and park facts from public records on Mission Bay Park, Balboa Park and LEGOLAND California. Figures are as published at the time of writing.
The verdict
Choose your San Diego base by what your kids will do most days, then choose the booking site by how much space you need.
| Area | Best for | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mission Bay and Mission Beach | Beach days, SeaWorld, bike rides, first-time visitors | Bay beaches have gentle water; Mission Beach has the boardwalk and Belmont Park |
| Coronado | Calm, walkable beach town, stay-put holidays | A separate city across the bay, with its own hotel tax |
| La Jolla | Tide pools, sea lions at La Jolla Cove, older kids | Usually pricier; parking can be tight in the village |
| Downtown and Little Italy | No car, short trips, the USS Midway Museum | Busiest during conventions and Comic-Con week |
| Old Town and Mission Valley | Central location, easy freeway and trolley access | Often good value for larger rooms; not on the beach |
| Carlsbad (north county) | LEGOLAND California | Two on-site LEGOLAND hotels, in north San Diego County |
Then make the booking cost less: compare the same dates on Booking.com, Vrbo and Hotels.com with the total price shown, use any member rate you qualify for, and go through ShopBack before you pay.

Where should I stay in San Diego with a family?
The best area to stay in San Diego with a family is usually Mission Bay, with Coronado and La Jolla close behind for beach-first trips, and Downtown or Old Town for car-free sightseeing. Your best pick depends on which attractions matter and whether you want a hotel or a whole home.
Mission Bay and Mission Beach. Mission Bay Park is often described as the largest man-made aquatic park in the United States, covering 4,235 acres, of which about 46% is land and 54% is water. That mix is why it works so well for families: you get sheltered bay beaches for toddlers, grassy parks for picnics, paths for bikes and scooters, and SeaWorld San Diego inside the park. Mission Beach, on the ocean side, adds the boardwalk and Belmont Park's rides. Hotels around the bay range from resort-style properties with pools to simpler motels, and Vrbo has many rental homes and condos nearby.
Coronado. Coronado is a separate city on a peninsula across San Diego Bay. Families like its wide, flat beach, its walkable main street and its slower pace. The Hotel del Coronado, which opened in 1888, is the best-known stay there. Coronado suits trips where you plan to spend most days at the beach rather than driving to attractions.
La Jolla. La Jolla is known for its coastline, tide pools and the sea lions and seals around La Jolla Cove. It suits families with older children who will enjoy snorkelling, kayaking and coastal walks. Stays here usually cost more than in Mission Bay, and parking in the village can be tight.
Downtown and Little Italy. Downtown puts you near the waterfront, the USS Midway Museum, Seaport Village and Little Italy's food. It is a good fit for families without a car or on a short trip, and the trolley connects Downtown to Old Town. Downtown hotels are busiest during big conventions, so check the city's event calendar before you book.
Old Town and Mission Valley. These central areas sit close to the freeways that link the beaches, Balboa Park and SeaWorld. Many families use them as a practical base with larger rooms and easier parking, then drive to a different area each day.
Carlsbad for LEGOLAND. LEGOLAND California is in Carlsbad, in north San Diego County. The resort runs two on-site hotels, the LEGOLAND Hotel and the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel, and lists partner hotels nearby. If LEGOLAND is a full day or two of your trip, a night or two in Carlsbad saves the drive.
Hotels in San Diego: what you actually pay
The biggest charge added to a San Diego room rate is the city's hotel tax. According to the City of San Diego Treasurer, stays in the City of San Diego carry a Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) based on tax zone, effective May 1, 2025:
| Charge (City of San Diego) | Rate | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Transient Occupancy Tax, Tax Zone 1 | 11.75% of rent | Hotels, motels and short-term rentals |
| Transient Occupancy Tax, Tax Zone 2 | 12.75% of rent | Hotels, motels and short-term rentals |
| Transient Occupancy Tax, Tax Zone 3 | 13.75% of rent | Hotels, motels and short-term rentals |
| Tourism Marketing District assessment | 2.00% of rent | Lodging businesses with 70 or more rooms; may be passed on to guests |
Before May 1, 2025, the TOT was 10.50%. The City says the tax applies to short-term rental homes and condos as well as hotels, including stays booked through travel websites. Coronado and Carlsbad are separate cities, so their rates differ.
What this means for a family budget. On $250 a night of rent in Tax Zone 3, TOT alone adds about $34.38 a night. At a larger hotel that passes on the 2% assessment, add another $5. Over four nights that is roughly $157 in taxes and assessments on $1,000 of rent, before any resort or parking fees.
Fees matter as much as tax. Resort-style hotels may charge a daily resort fee, and vacation rentals often add a cleaning fee. The Federal Trade Commission announced its Junk Fees Rule on December 17, 2024, targeting hidden fees for hotels and vacation rentals and requiring businesses that show a price to show the total price including mandatory fees. Use that total price, not the nightly rate, when you compare a Mission Bay hotel with a Coronado one or a Vrbo home.
Hotels in San Diego 2026: dates to plan around
San Diego's family hotel demand usually peaks in summer, when school is out and the beaches are at their busiest. The single biggest event for Downtown hotels is Comic-Con. According to Comic-Con International, the next show runs Thursday July 22 to Sunday July 25, 2027, with Preview Night on Wednesday July 21. If your family trip falls that week, expect Downtown and nearby areas to fill early, and consider Mission Bay, Old Town or Carlsbad instead.
A few other planning points:
- June Gloom. Late spring and early summer often bring a grey marine layer to the coast in the mornings, which locals call June Gloom. It usually burns off, but it is worth knowing if beach time is the whole point.
- Weekends. Beach areas fill with weekend visitors from around Southern California, so Sunday to Thursday stays usually price lower.
- School holidays. Spring break, summer and the winter holidays bring the most families, which can push prices up at family-friendly resorts.
Cheapest month for hotels in San Diego
The cheapest times for San Diego hotels are usually late fall, the quieter winter weeks between the holidays and early spring, outside school breaks and big events. Summer and convention weeks tend to be the most expensive because demand is highest.
The most reliable way to find your cheapest dates is to check prices for a few date ranges on Booking.com, Vrbo and Hotels.com with flexible dates. A simple method:
- Pick two or three possible weeks, including one outside summer.
- Check the same area and room type for each week, Sunday to Thursday.
- Compare the total price including taxes and fees.
- Book the week that gives you the best total, then go through ShopBack before you pay.
Shifting a four-night stay from a summer weekend to a midweek in early spring can change the total more than any single code, and the mild weather means the beach is still an option on many days.
Hotels in San Diego: best deals for US families in 2026
The best San Diego hotel deals for families in 2026 usually come from the right area, the right nights and the right booking method together. A practical order:
- Pick your base. Mission Bay for beach and SeaWorld, Coronado or La Jolla for a beach town, Downtown or Old Town for car-free sightseeing, Carlsbad for LEGOLAND.
- Pick the room type. A suite or a Vrbo home with a kitchen can save on meals for a family of four or more.
- Pick the nights. Shift to Sunday to Thursday where you can, and avoid Comic-Con week Downtown.
- Compare the total price. Include tax, resort fees, cleaning fees and parking.
- Use member rates. Booking.com Genius and the One Key programme shared by Vrbo, Hotels.com and Expedia can lower the price on participating stays.
- Open ShopBack before you book. Your effective price is what you pay minus the cash ShopBack returns.
Look for parking costs too. Many beach-area and Downtown hotels charge for parking, and a free-parking hotel in Mission Valley can work out cheaper overall if you plan to drive every day.
Booking.com vs Vrbo for San Diego: price comparison
Neither Booking.com nor Vrbo is cheaper every time for a San Diego family stay, because they mostly sell different kinds of places. Vrbo focuses on vacation rentals such as houses and condos, while Booking.com lists hotels as well as apartments and homes. Prices change daily, so compare the same area, dates and number of bedrooms with the total price shown.
| What to compare | Booking.com | Vrbo |
|---|---|---|
| Main type of stay | Hotels, plus apartments and homes | Vacation rental homes and condos |
| Member programme | Genius, free to join | One Key, shared with Hotels.com and Expedia |
| Fees to check | Resort fees and taxes | Cleaning fees, service fees and taxes |
| Best for | Short stays, pools, daily housekeeping | Longer stays, kitchens, separate bedrooms |
What each company's own programme offers, at the time of writing:
- Booking.com Genius is free. Booking.com says members get discounts starting at 10% off select stays, with higher levels unlocking larger discounts on participating properties. Look for the Genius label on San Diego listings.
- One Key is the free loyalty programme shared by Vrbo, Hotels.com and Expedia. Expedia Group launched it in the United States in 2023. Members earn OneKeyCash on eligible bookings and can use it across the three sites.
A simple rule for families: for two or three nights with small children, a hotel with a pool near Mission Bay is often simpler. For five nights or more, or two families travelling together, a Vrbo home with a kitchen and laundry can bring the per-person cost down. Whichever you choose, go through ShopBack to that site before you book.
Booking.com, Vrbo and Hotels.com for San Diego hotels
All three list a wide range of San Diego stays, from bayfront resorts to Old Town hotels and beach houses. Booking.com is known for its range of properties and Genius discounts. Vrbo is the place to look for whole homes near Mission Beach, Pacific Beach and Coronado. Hotels.com focuses on hotels and shares One Key with Vrbo and Expedia, so rewards from one can be used on the others.
How ShopBack fits, step by step:
- Pick your area, dates and the room or home you want.
- Open Booking.com, Vrbo or Hotels.com from ShopBack US.
- Search and book as usual, with any member rate you qualify for.
- Your cashback shows in your ShopBack account once the booking is tracked, and it is confirmed after your stay according to the store's terms.
Cashback lowers what you actually pay for a booking. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles. Your effective price is what you pay minus the cash ShopBack returns. As an illustration only: on a $1,200 four-night family booking at an illustrative 5%, $60 comes back, so the effective price is $1,140. The real rate changes, so check the live rate on each ShopBack store page before you book.
Read the store terms on each page as well. They explain which bookings are eligible and what happens if you cancel or change a stay.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in San Diego with kids?
Mission Bay is usually the easiest base for families. Mission Bay Park covers 4,235 acres, about 54% of it water, and is described as the largest man-made aquatic park in the United States. SeaWorld San Diego sits inside the park, and calm bay beaches suit younger children. Coronado and La Jolla suit families who want a quieter beach town, and Downtown or Old Town suit families without a car.
Is Coronado or Mission Bay better for families?
Both work well, for different trips. Mission Bay puts you close to SeaWorld, bay beaches, bike paths and the Mission Beach boardwalk. Coronado is a separate small city across the bay with a wide, flat beach and a slower pace, and it suits families who want to stay put. Coronado is further from SeaWorld than Mission Bay, so factor in driving time if SeaWorld is on your list.
How much is hotel tax in San Diego?
In the City of San Diego, hotel and short-term rental stays carry a Transient Occupancy Tax of 11.75%, 12.75% or 13.75% of the rent depending on the tax zone, effective May 1, 2025, according to the City Treasurer. Hotels with 70 or more rooms also pay a 2% Tourism Marketing District assessment, which they may pass on to guests. Coronado and Carlsbad are separate cities with their own rates.
What is the cheapest month for hotels in San Diego?
Prices are usually lower outside summer school holidays and away from big events. Summer is San Diego's busiest family season, and Comic-Con week in July fills Downtown hotels; the next Comic-Con runs July 22 to 25, 2027, with Preview Night on July 21. For a lower price, look at late fall, winter weeks outside the holidays and early spring, and book Sunday to Thursday where you can.
Is Booking.com or Vrbo better for a family stay in San Diego?
It depends on what you need. Vrbo lists vacation rentals, so it suits families who want a kitchen, separate bedrooms and a washer. Booking.com lists hotels as well as apartments and homes, and suits shorter stays or families who want daily housekeeping and a pool. Compare the total price for the same dates, including cleaning fees and taxes, then go through ShopBack US to the site you pick.
Are Vrbo and Hotels.com part of the same rewards programme?
Yes. Vrbo, Hotels.com and Expedia share the One Key loyalty programme, which Expedia Group launched in the United States in 2023. Members earn OneKeyCash on eligible bookings and can use it across the three sites. Check the One Key terms on each site for the current earn rules.
Where should I stay in San Diego for the zoo and LEGOLAND?
For the San Diego Zoo, stay Downtown, in Little Italy or in Old Town, a short drive from Balboa Park, where the zoo covers about 100 acres. For LEGOLAND California, stay in Carlsbad in north San Diego County, where the resort runs two on-site hotels, the LEGOLAND Hotel and the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel. Many families split the trip between the two areas.
Do San Diego hotel prices include all fees?
Not always at first glance, so compare the total. The Federal Trade Commission's Junk Fees Rule, announced on December 17, 2024, targets hidden fees for hotels and vacation rentals and requires businesses that show a price to show the total including mandatory fees. Taxes can still be added at checkout, so compare the final amount before you pay.
How do I get cash back on a San Diego hotel or Vrbo booking?
The last step before you book is to open ShopBack. Open Booking.com, Vrbo or Hotels.com from ShopBack US, book as usual, and part of the eligible spend comes back as cash. On a $1,200 four-night family booking at an illustrative 5%, $60 comes back, so the effective price is $1,140. Check the live rate on the ShopBack store page.
Is it better to stay Downtown San Diego with kids?
Downtown works well for families without a car and for short city breaks. You are close to the waterfront, the USS Midway Museum, Little Italy and the trolley to Old Town, and Balboa Park is a short ride away. Families who want to spend most days on the sand usually prefer Mission Bay, Coronado or La Jolla.
