Where Should I Stay in Yellowstone or Grand Canyon, and When to Book?
In Yellowstone, stay at Old Faithful, Canyon or Lake for the main sights, or in gateway towns such as West Yellowstone and Gardiner, and book as early as you can: the National Park Service says park lodging fills quickly and campsites open exactly six months ahead. At the Grand Canyon, Tusayan, 7 miles from the South Rim, is the closest value base.

Where should I stay in Yellowstone, and how far ahead do I need to book?
Stay as close as you can to what you want to see, and book the day you know your dates. Yellowstone covers nearly 3,500 square miles, according to the National Park Service, and about 50 miles of road separates Old Faithful from the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, with a 45 mph speed limit. Where you sleep decides how much of each day you spend driving.
The NPS says Yellowstone lodging "fills quickly, so reservations should be made as early as possible". For campgrounds, it says reservations open on a rolling basis, so you can book a site exactly six months before the night you want. Yellowstone National Park Lodges, which runs every lodge in the park, refunds the full deposit if you cancel with 30 days' notice, so booking early and adjusting later usually costs little.
A simple rule: book in-park lodging as soon as your dates are set, set a reminder for six months before a campground night, and keep a refundable gateway town hotel as a backup.
Yellowstone lodging: the nine places to stay inside the park
According to the National Park Service, Yellowstone has nine lodging options inside the park, all run by Yellowstone National Park Lodges. The NPS groups them by area and gives each a relative price range, from $ (lower) to $$$ (higher):
| Lodge | Area | NPS price range | Typical season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old Faithful Inn | Old Faithful | $$$ | May to mid-October |
| Old Faithful Lodge Cabins | Old Faithful | $ | Early May to early October |
| Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Cabins | Old Faithful | $$ | Year-round, short closure in March and April |
| Canyon Lodge and Cabins | Canyon Village | $$$ | Mid-May to late October |
| Lake Yellowstone Hotel and Cabins | Lake Village | $$$ | Mid-May to early October |
| Lake Lodge Cabins | Lake Village | $ | Early June to early October |
| Grant Village Lodge | Grant Village | $$ | Late May to early October |
| Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and Cabins | Mammoth Hot Springs | $$ | Year-round, short closure in March and April |
| Roosevelt Lodge Cabins | Tower-Roosevelt | $ | Early June to early September |
Which area suits which trip, based on the NPS descriptions:
- Old Faithful puts you in the Upper Geyser Basin, home to the world's largest concentration of geysers. Old Faithful Inn is a National Historic Landmark.
- Canyon Village has more than 500 rooms and cabins near the Lower and Upper Falls.
- Lake Village sits on Yellowstone Lake. The Lake Yellowstone Hotel is the oldest operating hotel in the park.
- Grant Village is on the lake's southern shore and is the nearest village to Grand Teton National Park.
- Mammoth Hot Springs is near the North Entrance and Gardiner, Montana, and its hotel also opens in winter.
- Roosevelt is the quiet northeast option, close to the Lamar Valley for wildlife.
Plan for simple rooms. The NPS notes that park rooms have no air conditioning or TVs, and several have no WiFi.
Yellowstone lodging 2026: campgrounds and their booking window
For 2026, camping is the lowest-cost way to sleep inside Yellowstone, and every site must be booked ahead except some winter sites at Mammoth. The NPS says the park has 11 campgrounds with more than 2,000 sites, and that most are reserved far in advance.
Five campgrounds (Bridge Bay, Canyon, Fishing Bridge RV Park, Grant Village and Madison) are booked through Yellowstone National Park Lodges, and the rest through Recreation.gov. The NPS lists 2026 nightly fees from $20 at the smaller Recreation.gov campgrounds to $45 at Canyon and Grant Village, before taxes, and Fishing Bridge RV Park, the only site with full hookups, at $94. Yellowstone National Park Lodges also offers 50% off standard rates at Bridge Bay, Canyon, Grant and Madison campgrounds to Interagency Access Pass and Senior Pass holders, not including Fishing Bridge.
Yellowstone lodging: best deals for US travelers in 2026
The best Yellowstone deals usually come from flexible dates, the lower-priced cabin areas, or a gateway town, booked through ShopBack. A few ways to bring the cost down:
- Pick a $ area. The NPS lists Lake Lodge Cabins, Old Faithful Lodge Cabins and Roosevelt Lodge Cabins in its lowest price range.
- Share a room. Yellowstone National Park Lodges prices rooms for up to two adults and lets children 11 and under stay free; each extra adult is $25 plus tax a night, according to its policies.
- Split your stay. Spend a night or two inside the park near Old Faithful, then move to a gateway town for the north or west of the park.
- Use a gateway town. West Yellowstone sits by the West Entrance, about 30 minutes from Madison Junction by NPS drive time estimates, and Gardiner sits by the North Entrance, about 15 minutes from Mammoth.
- Book through ShopBack. Save on your trip by booking flights, hotels and activities through ShopBack.
If you are flying, the NPS lists year-round commercial service at Cody and Jackson, Wyoming, Bozeman and Billings, Montana, and Idaho Falls, Idaho, with seasonal flights into West Yellowstone from early May to mid-October.
Expedia vs Hotels.com: Yellowstone lodging price comparison for 2026
In-park Yellowstone lodges are booked directly with Yellowstone National Park Lodges, so Expedia and Hotels.com matter most for gateway town hotels. For those, compare the same hotel on the same dates on both sites, using the final total with taxes and fees.
What to compare:
- The total, not the nightly rate. Resort fees and taxes can change which site is cheaper.
- Cancellation terms. A refundable rate is worth a little more for a summer trip booked many months out.
- Room type. Gateway towns have motels, lodges and cabins, so make sure both listings are the same room.
- Rentals for groups. For a family or two couples, a cabin or house on Vrbo near West Yellowstone or Gardiner can be worth pricing against two hotel rooms.
Other travel sites on ShopBack US include Booking.com, Priceline, Trip.com and Agoda.

Where should I stay at the Grand Canyon for the best value?
For most visitors, the best value base is Tusayan, Arizona, 7 miles south of Grand Canyon Village on Highway 64, according to the National Park Service. It is the closest town to the South Rim, and the NPS runs a free Tusayan shuttle to the South Rim Visitor Center in summer (you need a park entrance pass to ride).
The NPS lists these Tusayan hotels: The Squire at Grand Canyon (a Holiday Inn Resort), Grand Canyon Plaza Hotel, The Grand Hotel, Holiday Inn Express and Suites, and Red Feather Lodge.
If Tusayan is full or over budget, the NPS lists more towns farther out, where a wider choice of hotels can mean a lower price in exchange for a longer drive:
| Town | Distance to the South Rim (NPS) |
|---|---|
| Tusayan | 7 miles south |
| Valle | 30 miles south |
| Williams | 60 miles south |
| Flagstaff | 80 miles southeast |
| Cameron | 30 miles east of Desert View |
Grand Canyon lodging 2026: what is open inside the park
Check the NPS lodging page before you book a 2026 or 2027 Grand Canyon trip, because the park halted in-park overnight lodging from August 31, 2026. At the time of writing, the NPS says a flash flood on August 29 damaged the Transcanyon Waterline that supplies the park with water, so all park concessions stopped overnight stays, including Xanterra's El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, Maswik Lodge and Phantom Ranch, and Delaware North's Yavapai Lodge and Trailer Village. Hotels in Tusayan were not affected.
When the South Rim lodges are operating, the NPS says they are open all year and book up well in advance, especially during spring break, summer and fall weekends. Xanterra runs the Historic District lodges (Bright Angel, El Tovar, Kachina, Thunderbird and Maswik), and Delaware North runs Yavapai Lodge near the Visitor Center.
On the North Rim, the historic Grand Canyon Lodge was destroyed by fire in 2025, according to Wikipedia.
How far ahead to book Grand Canyon lodging
Book Grand Canyon lodging as soon as your dates are set, and much earlier for the canyon bottom. According to the NPS:
- South Rim lodges book up well in advance, especially in spring break, summer and fall weekends.
- Phantom Ranch, at the bottom of the canyon, is booked through an online lottery 15 months ahead.
- Desert View Campground takes reservations up to 6 months ahead on Recreation.gov.
Gateway town hotels in Tusayan, Williams and Flagstaff can usually be booked closer in, but summer weekends still fill, so keep a refundable booking.

The best Grand Canyon lodging deals in 2026 come from staying in Tusayan or farther out, comparing two or three booking sites, and booking through ShopBack. ShopBack lowers the effective price of flights, hotels and online orders after you pay.

Expedia vs Hotels.com: Grand Canyon lodging price comparison for 2026
For a Tusayan, Williams or Flagstaff hotel, compare the same room and dates on Expedia, Hotels.com and Booking.com, using the final total, and pick the one with the best price and cancellation terms. Each site has its own strengths: Expedia lets you bundle a flight and hotel, Hotels.com and Booking.com list a wide range of hotels in one search, and Vrbo covers houses and cabins for groups.

Your card's terms decide what the card earns. Go through ShopBack before you pay as well. Our guide to ShopBack and credit cards in the US has the details.
Mistakes that make a national park stay cost more
- Waiting for a deal on in-park lodging. Yellowstone lodges fill quickly, and booking early with a 30-day refund window costs little.
- Missing the six-month campground window. Yellowstone sites open exactly six months ahead.
- Booking a far town to save money, then losing hours driving. Price your time and fuel too.
- Not checking the Grand Canyon status. In-park lodging was halted from August 31, 2026; check the NPS page first.
- Booking first and opening ShopBack later. A booking usually cannot be added afterwards, so start from ShopBack before you book.
