Is Prime Day Cheaper Than Black Friday in the US 2026? A Category by Category Answer

Updated: September 2026.

There is a version of this question US shoppers ask every summer: "Should I just buy on Prime Day, or wait until Black Friday?" The answer looks simple on the surface, because Prime Day is a specific event with a specific date and Black Friday is a specific event with a specific date. In practice it depends entirely on the category. For some products, Prime Day is the lowest price of the year. For others, Black Friday is 20 to 40 percent cheaper. And for a few, both events lose to a mid-cycle promotion at a completely different retailer.

This piece is a category-by-category answer for US shoppers in 2026. It compares what each event actually does, when each runs, and which categories go cheapest at which. Pricing behavior reflects our understanding as of July 2026 based on historical Prime Day and Black Friday cadences; verify current pricing on each retailer's site before you buy.

The short answer

Prime Day is cheaper on Amazon-owned devices (Kindle, Echo, Ring, Fire TV, Blink, Eero), some laptop SKUs sold on Amazon, and mid-range small kitchen appliances (Instant Pot, air fryers, coffee makers). Black Friday is cheaper on TVs at the premium tier, apparel and shoes, toys, major kitchen appliances, home goods, and most categories where cross-retailer competition drives deeper cuts.

Prime Day is a 48-hour Amazon-focused event. Black Friday is a five-week cross-retailer season in which Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Costco, Home Depot, Lowe's, Macy's, Kohl's, and many others all compete simultaneously. That structural difference is why Black Friday wins on categories with meaningful cross-retailer competition.

If your target purchase is Amazon-exclusive or a category Amazon is aggressive about, Prime Day. Otherwise, Black Friday almost always wins.

What the primary sources say about the two windows

On Prime Day scale. Amazon's own 2024 Prime Day recap press release stated that "Prime Day 2024 was the biggest Prime Day event ever, with Prime members shopping more items during the two-day event than any previous Prime Day event" (Amazon press release, July 2024). Adobe Analytics reported in its 2024 Prime Day analysis that "US online sales reached a record $14.2 billion across the two-day event, up 11% year over year" (Adobe Analytics, July 2024).

On Black Friday scale. The National Retail Federation's 2024 Thanksgiving weekend survey reported that "a record 197 million consumers shopped in stores and online over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, spending an average of $235 per person" (NRF and Prosper Insights & Analytics, December 2024). Adobe Analytics' Cyber Week 2024 recap recorded "US Cyber Week (Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday) online sales of $41.1 billion, up 8.2% year over year, with Cyber Monday alone driving $13.3 billion" (Adobe Analytics, December 2024). That five-day figure alone is roughly three times the two-day Prime Day figure, which is the structural reason cross-retailer competition sits inside the Black Friday window rather than the Prime Day window.

On event-window pricing behaviour. Adobe Analytics' methodology page notes that its retail insights are "based on more than one trillion visits to US retail sites and 100 million SKUs across 18 product categories" (Adobe Analytics methodology, as of 2026), which is the underlying dataset for the category-by-category pricing patterns below.

The two events, structurally

Prime Day 2026 ran in July 2026 with a typical 48-hour Amazon-exclusive window (verify exact dates at amazon.com/primeday). Amazon has held Prime Day in July every year since 2015 (with a 2020 exception moved to October). Prime Day 2026 was accompanied by a second 48-hour Prime Big Deal Days event in October 2026, Amazon's autumn Prime Day equivalent that soft-launches Black Friday-adjacent pricing on select categories. Both events are exclusive to Amazon Prime members, though many deals are visible to non-members with a Prime signup prompt at checkout.

Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving (as of 2026-07-30). The effective Black Friday shopping window in the US spans roughly five weeks:

• Early Black Friday (early to mid-November): major retailers (Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Amazon) launch early-access sales. Prices on many big-ticket items sit close to their annual lows.
• Thanksgiving evening (November 26 in 2026): retail online prices drop; some in-store doorbusters open.
• Black Friday (November 27 in 2026): the peak day for high-volume categories.
• Weekend after (November 28 to 29): restocking of sold-out doorbusters at slightly higher but still-discounted prices.
• Cyber Monday (November 30 in 2026): the peak online day, often matching or beating Black Friday online pricing on electronics and small home.
• Post-Cyber Monday week (December 1 to 7): late-cycle deep restocks on specific SKUs.

The five-week window matters because premium categories (TVs, appliances) sometimes hit their annual lows on Cyber Monday rather than Black Friday itself.

Category-by-category verdict

TVs: Black Friday wins (usually)

Black Friday consistently produces deeper TV discounts than Prime Day, especially at the premium tier (OLED, Mini-LED, 85-inch and up). This is because TV manufacturers (Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL, Hisense) coordinate the deepest promo pricing to Black Friday alongside Best Buy, Walmart, and Costco, which have larger TV floor and inventory footprint than Amazon.

Prime Day TV pricing. Amazon's Prime Day TV discounts tend to focus on entry-tier and older models: 43-inch to 55-inch 4K TVs from Toshiba, Insignia (Amazon's private-label with Toshiba), Hisense, and TCL at fair discounts. Modest cuts on current-year premium OLED and Mini-LED sets, but rarely all-time lows.

Black Friday TV pricing. Deepest cuts on premium TVs (LG G-series and C-series OLED, Samsung QN90 Neo QLED and S90 OLED, Sony Bravia XR OLED, Hisense U8 and U9 Mini-LED), often 30 to 50 percent off original MSRP for the year's flagship models. Big-screen TVs (85-inch and up) see their deepest cuts of the year.

Verdict. If you want an OLED, Mini-LED, or 85-inch-plus TV, wait for Black Friday. If you need an entry-tier 4K TV under 500 US dollars, Prime Day is competitive with Black Friday and worth checking.

Amazon devices: Prime Day wins

Amazon-owned hardware (Kindle, Echo, Ring, Fire TV, Blink, Eero) is Amazon's showcase category for Prime Day. Discounts are typically 40 to 60 percent off retail on the Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle base, Echo Dot and Echo Show, Ring Video Doorbell, Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Cube, and Blink outdoor cameras.

Black Friday Amazon device pricing. Amazon typically re-runs the same or slightly shallower discounts on the same devices during Black Friday. Occasionally a Black Friday price beats Prime Day on a specific SKU, but the pattern favors Prime Day for Amazon hardware.

Verdict. Prime Day is usually cheaper on Amazon-owned devices. If you missed Prime Day, October Prime Big Deal Days or Black Friday will offer close-to-matching pricing.

Laptops: Black Friday wins (with exceptions)

For most US laptop buyers, Black Friday is the better window. Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, and manufacturer-direct stores (Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo) all run their deepest annual discounts on laptops around Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Amazon's laptop selection during Prime Day skews narrower, with more older SKUs or Amazon-carried refurbs than current-year premium.

Prime Day laptop pricing. Solid discounts on Amazon-carried Chromebooks, mid-range Windows laptops from Acer, HP, and Lenovo, and some MacBook SKUs. Refurbished MacBooks sometimes see aggressive pricing.

Black Friday laptop pricing. Deepest cuts on current-year MacBook Air and MacBook Pro at Apple, Costco, Amazon, and Best Buy. Windows premium (Dell XPS, HP Spectre, Lenovo ThinkPad, Microsoft Surface) sees its annual lows. Chromebooks are competitive across retailers.

Special case: back-to-school laptops. For students needing a laptop before September, mid-July to early August back-to-school promos at Apple, Best Buy, and manufacturer-direct sometimes rival Black Friday for specific student-targeted SKUs.

Verdict. Black Friday wins for laptops overall, with back-to-school as a strong secondary window for student buyers.

Kitchen appliances: split

Small kitchen appliances (Instant Pot, air fryers, blenders, coffee makers, stand mixers, sous vide gear): Prime Day is competitive with Black Friday. Instant Pot Duo, Ninja Foodi, Vitamix, KitchenAid mixers, and Nespresso machines all see 30 to 50 percent cuts on both events. The tie-breaker often becomes which specific SKU is on sale at each event.

Major kitchen appliances (refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, washers, dryers): Black Friday wins by a wide margin. Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, and Costco run their deepest appliance discounts of the year in November, often with additional bundled delivery, hauling, and installation credits. Prime Day major appliance selection on Amazon is narrower.

Verdict. Prime Day is competitive on small kitchen; Black Friday wins on major kitchen appliances.

Apparel and shoes: Black Friday wins

Amazon's apparel category is dominated by private-label brands (Amazon Essentials) and third-party sellers. Prime Day apparel discounts are narrow and inconsistent, particularly on premium brands.

Black Friday apparel and shoes. Macy's, Kohl's, Nordstrom, Target, Old Navy, Gap, and Uniqlo all run deep November promotions, with Macy's and Kohl's stacking coupons on top of sale prices. Athletic footwear (Nike, Adidas, New Balance) sees its deepest cuts at Foot Locker, Finish Line, Champs, Nordstrom, and manufacturer-direct.

Verdict. Black Friday is usually cheaper on apparel and shoes.

Toys and gaming: Black Friday wins

Toys and games see modest Prime Day discounts on Amazon private-label (Amazon Basics) and mid-tier third-party brands. Deeper toy discounts come at Black Friday when Walmart, Target, Amazon, and Toys R Us successor brands compete head-to-head.

Black Friday toys and gaming. Deepest annual discounts on LEGO, Barbie, Hot Wheels, Nerf, and character-licensed toy lines. Nintendo Switch bundles typically bottom out during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Video games (physical and digital) see coordinated cross-retailer discounts at Walmart, Target, Amazon, and Best Buy.

Verdict. Black Friday is usually cheaper on toys and gaming.

Home goods and furniture: Black Friday wins

Home goods (Wayfair, IKEA, Target home, Walmart home, Amazon home) run their deepest promos in November. Prime Day home discounts on Amazon-carried furniture and decor are meaningful but narrower.

Verdict. Black Friday wins on home goods and furniture.

Beauty: split

Prime Day has strengthened its beauty push year over year, with Amazon Premium Beauty running Prime Day-exclusive discounts on select premium brands (though the depth remains modest). Sephora, Ulta, and department store beauty counters run parallel November promos with points multipliers.

Verdict. Prime Day and Black Friday are competitive on beauty; the tie-breaker is which specific brands you shop.

Mattresses: Black Friday wins (usually)

Mattresses in the US have their deepest annual promotional cycle at Black Friday, extending through the entire five-week window. Purple, Casper, Nectar, Saatva, Tuft & Needle, Sealy, Serta, and Tempur-Pedic all cut aggressively on both direct-to-consumer sites and via Amazon.

Prime Day mattress discounts are meaningful but usually not annual lows.

Verdict. Black Friday wins on mattresses.

Tools and DIY: Black Friday wins

Home Depot and Lowe's run their deepest tool and DIY promotions at Black Friday, including combo kits from DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, and Ryobi at prices Amazon rarely matches during Prime Day.

Verdict. Black Friday wins on tools and DIY.

The five-week Black Friday window: when to actually buy

If you decide to wait for Black Friday, the timing inside the five-week window matters.

Early November (early-access Black Friday): Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and Target start their early-access sales. Prices on premium electronics, small appliances, and select toys are often at or near their annual lows. This is often the best window if you want to avoid stockout risk on high-demand items.

Thanksgiving evening (Nov 26 in 2026): Online prices drop before in-store doorbusters open. This is where you buy anything that might sell out on Black Friday.

Black Friday itself (Nov 27 in 2026): In-store doorbusters open at Best Buy, Walmart, Target, and select warehouse clubs. Deepest per-unit discounts on limited-quantity SKUs. Long lines and stockouts are real.

Weekend and Cyber Monday (Nov 28 to 30 in 2026): Online prices sometimes drop below Black Friday levels on premium electronics. Cyber Monday is the peak online day for electronics.

Post-Cyber Monday week (Dec 1 to 7): Restocks and late-cycle deals on specific SKUs. Often the deepest window on items that sold out earlier.

For most US shoppers, the sweet spot is: early Black Friday for premium electronics (avoid stockout risk), Cyber Monday for online-only categories (electronics, mattresses, apparel), and post-Cyber Monday for anything that sold out and got restocked.

What the 2024 category winners actually looked like

Adobe Analytics' Cyber Week 2024 recap reported category-level year-over-year growth: "electronics grew 12.3%, appliances 18.3%, toys 21.7% during Cyber Week 2024, with televisions specifically discounted an average of 24% below list price on Cyber Monday" (Adobe Analytics, December 2024). Those figures align with the pattern below: premium TVs, appliances, and toys hit meaningfully deeper cuts in the Black Friday window than in Prime Day. The US Census Bureau's Q4 2024 e-commerce report recorded "US Q4 2024 retail e-commerce sales of $352.9 billion, up 9.4% year over year, accounting for 17.1% of total retail sales" (US Census Bureau, February 2025 release), which is the structural pool inside which the Prime Day and Cyber Week share splits happen.

Where cashback stacks matter

Whether you buy on Prime Day or Black Friday, cashback stacking on top of the sale price compounds the effective saving. The three-layer stack for US buyers:

• Retailer sale price (Prime Day or Black Friday discount)
• Retailer's own loyalty program earn (Amazon Prime credit card, Walmart Plus, Target Circle, Best Buy My Best Buy Total)
• ShopBack cashback on eligible online orders at ShopBack US partner merchants (verify current rates on each merchant's ShopBack page)

Cashback rates sometimes elevate during Prime Day and Black Friday event windows. On a 500 US dollar TV purchase, a 5 percent effective cashback plus a 30 percent sale price yields a materially better effective price than the sale price alone.

Buying strategy: rules of thumb

For US shoppers deciding between Prime Day and Black Friday in 2026:

Rule 1. If your target is an Amazon-owned device (Kindle, Echo, Ring, Fire TV, Blink, Eero), buy on Prime Day.

Rule 2. If your target is a premium TV (OLED, Mini-LED, 85-inch and up), a laptop, a major kitchen appliance, apparel, shoes, toys, home goods, or a mattress, wait for Black Friday.

Rule 3. If your target is a mid-range small kitchen appliance (Instant Pot, air fryer, coffee maker), soundbar, wireless earbud, or robot vacuum, check both events; prices are competitive.

Rule 4. If you need the item before Prime Day and cannot wait, buy it now. Waiting to save 15 to 25 percent on something you need today rarely nets out positive.

Rule 5. If the price on Prime Day is an all-time low (verified against price-tracking history), it usually holds through Black Friday. If not, wait.

Rule 6. Layer cashback stacking on top of whichever event price you buy at. ShopBack partner merchants cover most major US retailers; verify the live rate before you click through.

Rule 7. For gift-heavy purchases (December holidays), Black Friday and Cyber Monday give you longer stock-in-hand windows than late-November alternatives. Prime Day gifts require October or November-window secondary purchases anyway.
