Is It Safe to Buy From eBay Sellers in 2026? What Protects You
On eBay in the US, the eBay Money Back Guarantee covers items that don't arrive, don't match the listing, or where a seller won't honor its return policy, as long as you pay through eBay checkout. Here are the time limits, exclusions and checks that matter in 2026.
Buying from eBay sellers in the US comes with a written buyer promise, the eBay Money Back Guarantee. According to eBay at the time of writing, it covers you when an item doesn't arrive, doesn't match the listing, or the seller won't honor its stated return policy, and a successful claim refunds the full item cost plus original shipping. You have up to 30 calendar days after the estimated delivery date to report a missing item. The condition that matters most in 2026: you must pay through eBay checkout, because payments made outside eBay are not covered.
New to ShopBack? ShopBack US is a free cashback platform: you go through ShopBack before you buy at stores like eBay, and part of what you spend comes back to you as cash. It takes a couple of minutes to sign up, and the live rate is shown on each store's ShopBack page.
Found the listing? Go through ShopBack before you check out on eBay so the effective price of your order drops.
Is it safe to buy from eBay sellers, and what protects me?
What protects a US buyer on eBay is the eBay Money Back Guarantee, and it applies when you complete and pay for the purchase on eBay.com with an eligible payment method at checkout. eBay is a San Jose, California marketplace founded by Pierre Omidyar in September 1995. According to its Wikipedia entry, it reported 132 million annual active buyers worldwide in 2023 and handled $73 billion in transactions, 48% of them in the United States.
Because eBay is a marketplace, you buy from individual sellers, from people clearing out a closet to large businesses. That is why the useful question is not about eBay as a whole but about your specific order: did you pay through eBay, is the item a covered type, and do you act within the time limits? According to eBay's policy, all four of these conditions must hold for the guarantee to apply:
- You completed and paid for the purchase on eBay.com using an eligible payment method at checkout.
- You meet the policy's requirements, including acting within the time frames.
- The item is not an excluded item.
- You are not seeking a resolution for the same issue through another method at the same time.
Is eBay safe in 2026? The three situations the guarantee covers
According to eBay's Money Back Guarantee policy at the time of writing, the guarantee covers three situations.
- The item doesn't arrive. If it isn't delivered to the address on your order, or isn't made available for pickup, you are entitled to a full refund including original shipping.
- The item doesn't match the listing. eBay gives examples: the seller sent the wrong item, or it arrived broken, damaged or faulty and wasn't clearly described that way. You can return it for a refund even if the seller doesn't offer returns.
- The seller doesn't honor its stated return policy. If the listing promised returns and the seller doesn't follow through, you can ask eBay to step in.
When eBay decides the seller did not meet their requirements, eBay says the buyer receives a refund of the full item cost and original shipping, and may not even have to send the item back.
eBay official refund policy: the time limits
The time limits decide whether a claim can go ahead, so note them when you order. According to eBay at the time of writing:
| Problem | You act | Seller must respond | Ask eBay to step in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Item hasn't arrived | From the estimated delivery date, up to 30 calendar days after it | Within 3 business days | From 3 to 21 business days after your report |
| Item doesn't match the listing | Within 30 calendar days of delivery, or the seller's return window if longer | Within 3 business days | Once the return is accepted or after 3 business days, up to 21 business days if the seller never responds |
A few more details from eBay's policy:
- The seller pays return shipping on a "doesn't match the listing" return.
- Refunds are due within 2 business days of the seller receiving the return. If return tracking shows delivery, eBay may issue the full refund on the seller's behalf.
- Proof of delivery is strict. For a seller to show successful delivery, eBay requires tracking from an integrated carrier, a delivered or attempted delivery status, the date, and a matching zip code. On orders with a total cost of $750 or more, signature confirmation is also required.
- Event tickets have their own rule: the latest date to report non-arrival is 30 calendar days after the latest estimated delivery date or 7 calendar days after the event, whichever is later.
What the eBay Money Back Guarantee does not cover
The biggest gap is any payment made outside eBay. eBay's policy says items paid for where any part of the payment was completed outside eBay, such as bank transfer, cash, money orders or escrow services, are not covered. If a seller messages you and suggests paying another way to "save fees," that order leaves the guarantee behind.
According to eBay at the time of writing, these item types are excluded:
- Real estate, websites and businesses for sale
- Digital content and other intangible goods, including NFTs
- Classified ads
- Services
- Travel tickets or vouchers
- Industrial equipment and heavy machinery (covered instead by eBay Business Equipment Purchase Protection)
- Motor vehicles, including RVs, aircraft and boats (covered instead by eBay Vehicle Protection)
Delivery situations that eBay lists as not covered include an item collected by a third party for you, shipping you arranged yourself, a wrong address you entered at checkout, and third-party freight forwarding or mail redirection. If a package arrives empty or damaged in transit, eBay's advice is to accept the delivery and report that the item doesn't match the listing.
Buying from another country? eBay says the protection that applies is the one for the eBay site where you completed checkout, regardless of where the item was listed.
eBay Authenticity Guarantee for higher-value items
For certain categories, eBay adds an expert check before the item reaches you. eBay's Authenticity Guarantee applies to listings with the Authenticity Guarantee checkmark, in categories including sneakers, handbags, watches, jewelry, streetwear, trading cards and coins. eBay says a team of experienced authenticators examines the item before it ships on to you, and notes that the program is independent from the brands sold on eBay.
If you are buying a branded item where authenticity matters, filtering for the Authenticity Guarantee checkmark is one of the simplest checks you can make.
How to check an eBay seller before you buy
Five quick checks are worth making before any eBay purchase.
- Read the seller's feedback on the listing, including the most recent comments, not just the overall number.
- Read the whole listing, especially condition notes, photos of flaws and the item location.
- Check the return policy shown on the listing, and remember the guarantee still applies if the item doesn't match the description.
- Pay only through eBay checkout with an eligible method such as a credit or debit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Venmo.
- Note the estimated delivery date so you know when your 30-day window to report a missing item starts.
eBay reviews on Trustpilot and the BBB: how to read them
Review scores on sites like Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau change over time, so read the latest reviews rather than relying on one headline score. Reviews of a large marketplace mix experiences with many different sellers, and they tend to cluster around a few topics: items that arrived late or not at all, items that didn't match the description, and how long a return took.
The most useful way to read a complaint is to check it against eBay's published terms. Was the payment made through eBay checkout? Was the item an excluded type? Did the buyer report it within 30 days? A complaint about an off-platform payment tells you little about an order paid through eBay.
eBay customer service: getting help with an order
For any refund question, start from the order in your Purchase history. Opening the request from the order keeps the item, seller and delivery details attached. The usual path is:
- Open the order and report that the item hasn't arrived, or start a return if it doesn't match the listing.
- Give the seller their 3 business days to respond.
- If the seller doesn't respond or you can't agree, ask eBay to step in from the same request, within the time limits above.
eBay says it may hold a return request open for up to 35 business days after the return was accepted, so keep your messages and tracking until the refund lands.
How to pay less on an eBay order
For merchants like eBay, going through ShopBack is an essential step before you check out, so you pay less on the same order. Here is a simple order to follow:
- Pick the listing and check the seller, the return policy and the total price.
- Open the eBay page on ShopBack US and tap through to eBay.
- Check out in the same session, paying through eBay checkout so the Money Back Guarantee applies.
- Keep your order confirmation until the item arrives and any return is settled.
ShopBack works like an automatic cash discount on your online order. Cashback lowers what you actually pay for an order. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles.
Here is an illustrative example. On a $200 eBay order at an illustrative 5%, $10 comes back, so the effective price is $190. Rates change, and some purchases such as gift card redemptions or codes not shown on ShopBack can affect what qualifies, so check the live rate and terms on the eBay ShopBack page on the day you buy.
Other marketplaces and stores in the same category
eBay sits alongside other big US online stores and marketplaces such as Walmart, Target and Best Buy, and shoppers often compare the same item across a few; whichever you pick, open its ShopBack page first.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to buy from eBay sellers, and what protects me?
What protects a US buyer on eBay is the eBay Money Back Guarantee. According to eBay at the time of writing, it applies when an item doesn't arrive, doesn't match the listing, or the seller doesn't honor its stated return policy, as long as you completed and paid for the purchase through eBay checkout with an eligible payment method and acted within the time limits. Payments made outside eBay are not covered.
What does the eBay Money Back Guarantee cover?
According to eBay's policy at the time of writing, the eBay Money Back Guarantee covers three situations: the item never arrives, the item doesn't match the listing (for example the wrong item, or it arrives broken, damaged or faulty), and the seller doesn't fulfill the return policy stated in the listing. When eBay decides in the buyer's favor, the buyer gets a refund of the full item cost and original shipping.
What is not covered by the eBay Money Back Guarantee?
eBay's policy excludes any purchase where part of the payment happened outside eBay, such as bank transfer, cash, money orders or escrow services. Excluded items include real estate, websites and businesses for sale, digital content and other intangible goods, classified ads, services, and travel tickets or vouchers. Motor vehicles and industrial equipment fall under separate eBay protection programs.
How long do I have to report an eBay item that never arrived?
According to eBay, you can report an item that hasn't arrived once the estimated delivery date has passed, and no later than 30 calendar days after it. The seller then has 3 business days to respond with tracking, a delivery update or a refund. If that doesn't resolve it, you can ask eBay to step in from 3 business days after your report up to 21 business days after it.
How do eBay returns work when an item doesn't match the listing?
eBay says you can request a return within 30 calendar days of the estimated or actual delivery date, or within the seller's own return window if that is longer, even if the seller doesn't normally accept returns. The seller must respond within 3 business days and pays return shipping. Once tracking shows the return delivered, the refund is due within 2 business days, and eBay may issue it on the seller's behalf.
Which payment methods are covered on eBay?
According to eBay's policy at the time of writing, eligible payment methods at eBay checkout include credit and debit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Venmo, eBay gift cards, vouchers and eBay Bucks, among others. If any part of the payment is made outside eBay, the purchase is not covered.
What is the eBay Authenticity Guarantee?
The eBay Authenticity Guarantee is a check by independent expert authenticators before an eligible item reaches you. eBay says it applies to listings with the Authenticity Guarantee checkmark in categories such as sneakers, handbags, watches, jewelry, streetwear, trading cards and coins.
How do I read eBay reviews on Trustpilot and the BBB?
Review scores on sites like Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau change over time, so read the most recent reviews rather than one headline score. Reviews of a large marketplace usually mix experiences with many different sellers, so the more useful check is the individual seller's feedback on the listing and whether the purchase fits eBay's Money Back Guarantee terms.
How do I contact eBay customer service about a refund?
Start from the order in your Purchase history and open the request there, whether the item hasn't arrived or doesn't match the listing. That keeps the order details attached. If the seller doesn't respond or you can't agree, use the same request to ask eBay to step in within the time limits in eBay's Money Back Guarantee policy.
How does ShopBack lower what I pay on eBay?
Go through ShopBack US before you check out on eBay: open the eBay page on ShopBack, tap through to eBay and buy as usual. ShopBack works like an automatic cash discount on your online order, so cashback comes back as cash and the effective price drops. On a $200 order at an illustrative 5%, $10 comes back and the effective price is $190; check the live rate on the eBay ShopBack page.
