Puerto Rico vs Costa Rica vs Dominican Republic: US Family Trip 2026

For a US family of four planning a 2026 Caribbean holiday, three destinations rise to the top of most shortlists: Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, and Dominican Republic. Each offers a beach-plus-nature blend that fits family travel, and each is bookable through the major US OTAs. But the trip shape, the price model, the passport friction, and the kid-activity fit diverge sharply. Here is the three-way verdict for 2026.

The verdict

TL;DR for US families of four choosing a 2026 Caribbean-region beach-plus-nature holiday:

Puerto Rico is the verdict when the priority is passport-free travel, short flights from the Eastern US, and USD-only spending. San Juan, Rincon, and El Yunque combine into a low-friction first Caribbean trip. Best for families with a mix of young and older kids, and families making their first trip beyond the mainland.

Costa Rica is the verdict when the priority is rainforest, volcano, and wildlife immersion with older kids age 7 and up. Arenal, Manuel Antonio, and Guanacaste combine into a two- or three-base itinerary that rewards active older kids and delivers memorable nature over pure beach lounging.

Dominican Republic is the verdict when the priority is fixed-price all-inclusive resort economics for families with young kids under 7. Punta Cana and Puerto Plata concentrate the Caribbean's deepest all-inclusive family-brand inventory, and the bundled meal-and-drinks model removes daily decision fatigue for parents of small children.

The three destinations, briefly

Puerto Rico is a US territory in the northeastern Caribbean, roughly 1,000 miles southeast of Miami. San Juan is the arrival airport and the cultural anchor: Old San Juan cobbled streets, El Morro fortress, Condado and Isla Verde beach corridors. Ninety minutes east of San Juan sits El Yunque National Forest (the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System). Two and a half hours west of San Juan sits Rincon, a family-friendly surf and sunset town. Culebra island (a 90-minute ferry or 30-minute puddle-jump flight) has one of the top-rated beaches in the Caribbean at Flamenco. USD is the currency, mobile carriers work as domestic, and REAL ID is enough for adults.

Costa Rica is a Central American country between Nicaragua and Panama with two coasts (Pacific to the west, Caribbean to the east). Family itineraries almost universally focus on the Pacific side: Guanacaste province (Liberia airport, LIR) with resort beaches and dry-forest wildlife; Arenal (a 2.5 hour drive from San Jose or a 3 hour transfer from Liberia) with active-volcano cone views, hot springs, and hanging bridge canopies; Manuel Antonio (a 3 hour drive from San Jose) with a national park where sloths and monkeys are visible from marked trails within 90 minutes of a family visit. Costa Rica charges a mandatory 13% VAT on most tourist services and a small arrival tax typically bundled into airfare.

Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola (Haiti holds the western third), the second-largest Caribbean nation by area and population. Family travel concentrates in two zones: Punta Cana on the east coast (Bavaro, Cap Cana, Uvero Alto) served by PUJ airport, and Puerto Plata on the north coast (POP airport, Playa Dorada, Cabarete). Both zones are dominated by all-inclusive resorts operated by chains including Iberostar, Barcelo, RIU, Melia, and Hyatt Zilara. A free e-ticket immigration form is now mandatory (replaces the old paid tourist card), filed online within 72 hours of arrival.

Flight cost and duration from the US

Sample: economy round-trip per adult, indicative shoulder-season 2026 (April to May and September to early November), booked 60 to 90 days ahead.

From US East Coast (JFK, EWR, MIA, ATL)

Destination	Flight time (nonstop where available)	Round-trip economy per adult	Family of four economy total
Puerto Rico (SJU)	3 to 4 hours	USD 200 to 450	USD 800 to 1,800
Costa Rica (SJO or LIR)	4 to 6 hours	USD 300 to 600	USD 1,200 to 2,400
Dominican Republic (PUJ or POP)	3 to 5 hours	USD 250 to 500	USD 1,000 to 2,000

From US West Coast (LAX, SFO, SEA)

Destination	Flight time with typical connection	Round-trip economy per adult	Family of four economy total
Puerto Rico (SJU)	8 to 11 hours (one stop)	USD 350 to 650	USD 1,400 to 2,600
Costa Rica (SJO or LIR)	6 to 9 hours (often nonstop LAX to SJO)	USD 350 to 700	USD 1,400 to 2,800
Dominican Republic (PUJ)	9 to 12 hours (one stop)	USD 400 to 750	USD 1,600 to 3,000

Pattern. From the East Coast, Puerto Rico is the cheapest and shortest, followed by Dominican Republic, then Costa Rica. From the West Coast, Costa Rica narrows the gap because of nonstop LAX to San Jose service, while Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic both require a connection. For a family of four flying from LAX or SFO, the flight-cost delta between the three destinations shrinks to roughly USD 200 to 400 total, which is often smaller than the on-ground price difference across a full week. Cheap flights and hotels for Costa Rica: how to book them from the US

The cheapest way to book flights and hotels for Costa Rica from the US is usually to pick your travel months first, fly into the airport closest to your first base, and compare the same dates on two or three booking sites such as Expedia, Priceline and Booking.com before you pay. As an indicative guide, East Coast round-trips to Costa Rica run about USD 300 to 600 per adult in shoulder months, and family-friendly hotels run roughly USD 250 to 500 a night. Then go through ShopBack before you check out, so the trip costs you less and you still book on the site you chose.

This section is for anyone pricing Costa Rica on its own, family or not. The rest of the article compares it with Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic.

Flights to Costa Rica: which airport and which airlines

According to the Costa Rica Tourism Board (visitcostarica.com), at the time of writing, the country has two main international airports:

Airport	Where it is	Best for
Juan Santamaria International (SJO)	Alajuela, near San Jose	The main airport. Central Valley, Arenal, Manuel Antonio, the Caribbean coast
Daniel Oduber Quiros International (LIR)	Liberia, Guanacaste	Guanacaste beaches, Monteverde and La Fortuna

The tourism board's airline list includes US carriers Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Sun Country Airlines and United Airlines, with Fly Breeze listed for late 2026. Domestic flights on Sansa Airlines and Green Airways connect more than 10 domestic airports, which can save a long drive between bases.

Two cost details matter when you compare fares. Costa Rica's departure tax of USD 29 per person has been included in most airline tickets since 2016, according to the tourism board, so check the fare breakdown before you assume it is missing. And open-jaw tickets (into LIR, out of SJO) can remove a long backtrack if you plan a beach week plus Arenal or Manuel Antonio, so price them against a simple round-trip.

From	Round-trip economy per adult, indicative (USD)	Notes
East Coast (JFK, EWR, MIA, ATL)	300 to 600	Nonstop service on several routes, 4 to 6 hours
West Coast (LAX, SFO, SEA)	350 to 700	Some nonstop LAX to SJO service, otherwise one stop

These are indicative shoulder-season bands, not live prices.

Cheapest months for flights to Costa Rica in 2026

There is no single cheapest month that holds every year, so treat this as a planning guide rather than a promise. According to the tourism board, the Pacific side (Guanacaste, Manuel Antonio) has a dry season from December to March, with April as a transition month, and a rainy season from May to October, with a drier spell in July and August locally called the veranillo, or little summer. The rainiest months are usually September and October. The Caribbean side runs on a different pattern, with relatively dry spells in February to March and again in September to October.

What that means for price: the dry season, US school holidays, Christmas and Easter are when demand peaks, so fares and hotel rates usually run higher then. The shoulder months used in this article's fare bands (April to May and September to early November) are where you are most likely to find the lower end of the USD 300 to 600 band from the East Coast. If you are flexible, run the same trip for a week in early May and a week in late January on the same booking site and compare the totals.

Hotels in Costa Rica: where to stay and what it costs

Hotel prices in Costa Rica swing more by region and style than by brand. From this article's seven-night family cost model:

Base	Typical family stay	Indicative cost
Arenal and La Fortuna	Family lodge with hot springs	USD 900 to 1,500 for 3 nights
Manuel Antonio	Family boutique hotel	USD 1,000 to 1,800 for 4 nights
Guanacaste (Papagayo, Tamarindo, Playa Conchal)	Beach resort or all-inclusive	Usually higher than the two above

According to the tourism board, Costa Rica's sales tax is 13%, so compare hotel totals with taxes and fees shown, not the headline nightly rate. US dollars and major credit cards are widely accepted, and you can drive with your US license for up to three months, which matters if you are pricing a rental car alongside the hotel.

Expedia vs Priceline vs Booking.com for Costa Rica flights and hotels

People often ask which site is cheapest for Costa Rica. No one site is always cheaper. Expedia and Priceline both sell flights, hotels and flight-plus-hotel packages, and Booking.com is strong on hotel and lodge inventory. The same dates can price differently on each, so:

1. Pick your dates and airports first.
2. Check the flight-plus-hotel package and the separate flight and hotel on two or three sites.
3. Compare the total with taxes, the cancellation terms and the change rules, not just the nightly rate.
4. Book the one that wins on price and terms.

Book through ShopBack before you check out

Booking through ShopBack lowers the cost of the trip, and you still book on the site you chose. Before you check out, go through ShopBack to get a post-purchase discount on the order. Cashback lowers what you actually pay for an order. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles.

Rates change and differ by booking type, so check the live rate on the Booking.com ShopBack page or the Expedia ShopBack page before you book.

Passport, ID, and border friction

Puerto Rico. As a US territory, Puerto Rico requires no passport for US citizens. Adults 18 and older must show a REAL ID compliant drivers license, state ID, US passport book or card, military ID, Global Entry card, or other TSA-approved document at the departure gate. Kids under 18 do not need ID for domestic flights. There is no customs form and no immigration line on arrival at SJU. The single biggest logistical simplification of the three destinations.

Costa Rica. US citizens need a valid US passport with at least one blank page, and Costa Rica typically requires six months of validity remaining beyond the departure date. US citizens receive a 180-day visa-free stamp on arrival. There is a small arrival tax typically bundled into the airline ticket price. Onward or return ticket may be requested at check-in. Passport validity is the single most common trip-blocker; check every family member's passport at least 90 days before travel because US passport renewal can take 6 to 8 weeks in standard processing.

Dominican Republic. US citizens need a valid US passport plus a completed free e-ticket immigration form filed online within 72 hours of arrival. The old paid tourist card has been folded into the airline ticket (typical bundled cost around USD 10) or is available at airport for those who arrive by land or sea. A departure tax of roughly USD 20 to 30 is also bundled into most airline tickets. Passport validity requirement is 30 days beyond stay, though six months is safer practice.

The friction ranking is unambiguous. Puerto Rico has none; Dominican Republic has moderate friction (passport plus 72-hour form); Costa Rica has moderate friction (passport plus visa-free stamp on arrival). For families with young kids or families that have historically only travelled domestically, Puerto Rico removes one of the biggest planning-stress items. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner across all three destinations to see whether the on-ground price advantage of Dominican Republic all-inclusives offsets the passport-planning overhead for your specific family.

Where each destination wins on family fit

Puerto Rico wins for: mixed-age families, first Caribbean trip, USD budgets

Best family bases:

• San Juan (Condado or Isla Verde) for city-plus-beach convenience, Old San Juan for a half-day of colonial-era exploration, Casa Bacardi factory tour, and dinner options that range from casual to elevated.
• El Yunque National Forest as a day trip from San Juan, roughly 45 to 60 minutes east, for waterfall pools, easy paved trails suitable for kids from age 4, and cloud-forest lookouts.
• Rincon on the west coast, roughly 2.5 hours by car from SJU, for gentler surf beaches (Sandy Beach, Steps), lighthouse sunset views, and a smaller-town family pace.
• Culebra as a two- or three-day extension for Flamenco Beach (frequently in Caribbean top-10 lists) with a family ferry from Ceiba or short puddle-jump flight from SJU.

Kid-activity fit. Snorkel at Fajardo bio bay, kayak in La Parguera, easy horseback ride at Cabo Rojo, beginner surf lesson at Rincon, hike to La Mina Falls in El Yunque, tour El Morro fortress. Age range 3 to teen all work.

Downsides. A la carte cost structure means daily food-and-activity budget management. San Juan traffic can be heavy. Some rural roads on the way to Rincon are narrow and winding.

Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to shortlist San Juan and Rincon properties in one view.

Costa Rica wins for: older kids, active families, nature immersion

Best family bases:

• Arenal / La Fortuna, a 2.5 hour drive from San Jose (SJO) or 3 hour transfer from Liberia (LIR), for hot springs (Tabacon, Baldi), hanging bridges canopy walks, La Fortuna waterfall, and volcano-cone views from the resort pool.
• Manuel Antonio, a 3 hour drive from SJO, for a compact national park where sloths, monkeys, and coatis are visible from marked trails within a family-friendly walk; small crescent beaches suitable for younger swimmers.
• Guanacaste (Papagayo Peninsula, Tamarindo, Playa Conchal), served by Liberia airport (LIR), for resort beaches with dry-forest wildlife, catamaran snorkel day trips, and beginner-friendly surf schools at Tamarindo.

Kid-activity fit. Ziplining at Monteverde or Arenal, hanging bridges canopy walk, chocolate tour, coffee farm tour, catamaran snorkel and sunset, night hike with a naturalist, beginner surf lesson, hot springs afternoon. Ideal age range 7 to teen; younger kids often struggle with hike-length attention.

Downsides. Longest overland-transfer time of the three destinations (Costa Rica is a country, not an island, and family itineraries usually chain two bases). Highest per-day cost among the three when nature-lodge premiums stack. Rain-season afternoons May through November mean afternoon activities may be limited.

Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to compare Arenal and Manuel Antonio properties on the same trip screen.

Dominican Republic wins for: young kids, fixed-price budgets, low-planning trips

Best family bases:

• Punta Cana (Bavaro, Uvero Alto, Cap Cana), served by PUJ airport, for the deepest concentration of family all-inclusives with waterparks, kids clubs, teen zones, and multi-restaurant resort campuses inside the fence.
• Puerto Plata (Playa Dorada, Cofresi), served by POP airport, for a slightly quieter northern-coast all-inclusive scene, closer proximity to 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua and cable car to Mount Isabel.
• Samana Peninsula, served via connecting via AZS or drive from POP or PUJ, for whale-watching January to March, quieter beaches, and a more independent-lodge feel.

Kid-activity fit. Waterpark inside the resort, kids club activities, teen game rooms, catamaran snorkel and sunset, buggy tour, 27 Waterfalls slide-and-jump (age 8+), Los Haitises boat with mangroves and pelican viewing. Ideal age range under 7 to teen; toddler-friendly because most of the day happens inside a single resort footprint.

Downsides. All-inclusive food quality can be inconsistent across resort tiers; look for 4.5-star and up if food is a priority. Outside-resort excursions require pre-booking through the resort. Some north-coast beaches see seasonal seagrass (Sargassum) drift. Hurricane risk June to November.

Compare all-inclusive nightly rates via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking; the price band across Punta Cana all-inclusives is wide, and one filter run can save USD 400 to 800 per family week.

The seven-night family-of-four cost model

Sample: seven nights, mid-tier mid-range hotel or resort, two adults plus two kids (age 6 and 9), shoulder-season 2026, indicative USD.

Puerto Rico (San Juan 3 nights plus Rincon 4 nights, a la carte)

Line item	Estimated cost
Flights East Coast (four economy round-trip)	USD 800 to 1,800
Hotel San Juan 3 nights (4-star family room)	USD 750 to 1,200
Hotel Rincon 4 nights (family suite or condo)	USD 800 to 1,600
Car rental 7 days plus fuel plus tolls	USD 400 to 600
Food (family, mix of casual and mid)	USD 700 to 1,100
Activities (El Yunque, snorkel, surf lesson, museum)	USD 300 to 500
Total (family of four, 7 nights)	USD 3,750 to 6,800

Costa Rica (Arenal 3 nights plus Manuel Antonio 4 nights, boutique mix)

Line item	Estimated cost
Flights East Coast (four economy round-trip)	USD 1,200 to 2,400
Hotel Arenal 3 nights (family lodge with hot springs)	USD 900 to 1,500
Hotel Manuel Antonio 4 nights (family boutique)	USD 1,000 to 1,800
Private shuttles between bases	USD 300 to 500
Rental car OR domestic flight	USD 250 to 500
Food (VAT-inclusive, mix of casual and mid)	USD 800 to 1,300
Activities (zipline, hanging bridges, national park, catamaran)	USD 500 to 800
Total (family of four, 7 nights)	USD 4,950 to 8,800

Dominican Republic (Punta Cana 7 nights all-inclusive)

Line item	Estimated cost
Flights East Coast (four economy round-trip)	USD 1,000 to 2,000
All-inclusive resort 7 nights (family suite, 4.5-star)	USD 1,800 to 3,500
Airport transfer round-trip	USD 60 to 120
Food (bundled in all-inclusive, tips and off-resort meals extra)	USD 150 to 350
Activities (buggy, catamaran, 27 Waterfalls, spa)	USD 300 to 600
Total (family of four, 7 nights)	USD 3,310 to 6,570

Pattern. Dominican Republic is the lowest total-cost model for a family of four when the all-inclusive fits the family (young kids, resort-day rhythm, no need to leave the fence). Puerto Rico is close on total, sometimes lower if the family picks a condo rental in Rincon over a full-service hotel. Costa Rica is the highest, driven by two-base transfers and premium eco-lodge pricing. But the trip shape differs materially: Dominican Republic delivers pure pool-plus-beach immersion, Costa Rica delivers wildlife-plus-adventure, Puerto Rico delivers a mix with the least friction.

Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to see how the specific dates and specific resort tier shift these bands for your family. Activate cashback via ShopBack at Expedia, Booking.com, Priceline, or Hotels.com before you book to earn on the hotel leg. Book flights via ShopBack partners to earn on the flight leg separately.

What this means in practice

In practice, a US East Coast family of four with kids age 5 and 8 planning a first Caribbean trip for spring break 2026 will most often choose Puerto Rico. Three nights San Juan and four nights Rincon on an a la carte model, El Yunque day trip in the middle, total roughly USD 4,500 to 5,500 all-in. No passport chase, no e-ticket form, no currency change, and short flights end-to-end. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to shortlist San Juan and Rincon properties. Book the hotel through Expedia, Booking.com, or Hotels.com after activating cashback via ShopBack. Book flights via ShopBack partners to earn cashback on the flight leg separately.

A second scenario: a Southeast family (Atlanta or Charlotte) with a 10 and 13 year old planning a summer 2026 Caribbean holiday with more adventure and less pool. Costa Rica is the fit. Three nights Arenal and four nights Manuel Antonio, private shuttle transfers, zipline plus hanging bridges plus national park plus catamaran, total roughly USD 5,500 to 7,500 all-in. Activate cashback via ShopBack at Expedia or Booking.com before booking the Arenal and Manuel Antonio hotels. Book flights via ShopBack partners to earn cashback on the flight leg.

A third scenario: a Midwest family (Chicago or Detroit) with kids age 3 and 6 planning a first international family trip during a February school break. Dominican Republic all-inclusive at Punta Cana is the fit. Seven nights all-inclusive family resort with waterpark and kids club, total roughly USD 3,500 to 5,500 all-in. The bundled meal-and-drink model absorbs the young-kid decision fatigue. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to see the price band across Punta Cana all-inclusive tiers, then activate cashback via ShopBack at the chosen OTA.

A fourth scenario: a West Coast family (LA or SF) of surfers with two teens planning a nature-heavy 10-day trip in November 2026. Costa Rica is the natural fit given nonstop LAX to San Jose service and consistent beginner-to-intermediate surf at Guanacaste (Playa Grande, Tamarindo) or Manuel Antonio side beaches. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to combine a Guanacaste surf base with an Arenal or Manuel Antonio inland extension.

A fifth scenario: a multi-generational trip (grandparents plus parents plus two kids) with a fixed-budget grandparent contribution. Dominican Republic Punta Cana all-inclusive fits every generation: kids clubs and waterparks for the youngest, resort spa and quiet beach for grandparents, catamaran and buggy for parents. Compare family-plus-grandparent room configurations via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking.

ShopBack works on all three destinations because the underlying OTAs (Expedia, Booking.com, Priceline, Hotels.com) are ShopBack partners in the US. When this verdict does NOT apply

• You are booking during a named-storm forecast window. Consider a Pacific-side Costa Rica base (Guanacaste, Manuel Antonio) or a non-Caribbean alternative altogether; verify travel insurance covers named-storm cancellation.
• You have a family member with a valid US passport but recent visa issues. Consult a licensed immigration professional before booking Costa Rica or Dominican Republic; Puerto Rico as US territory sidesteps this.
• You are travelling with an infant under 12 months. All three destinations are family-viable, but consider proximity to healthcare (Puerto Rico best on this axis due to US medical infrastructure and USD-priced pediatric care).
• You require kosher, halal, or strict-allergy meal service. A la carte destinations (Puerto Rico, Costa Rica) let you pick verified restaurants; all-inclusive Dominican Republic buffets carry cross-contamination risk. Contact the resort in advance to confirm dedicated preparation.
• You are chasing a specific hotel loyalty program. Marriott Bonvoy has strong Puerto Rico and Punta Cana coverage; Hyatt has strong Puerto Rico and Guanacaste presence; IHG has coverage across all three. Book direct with the chain if elite-status accrual is the priority; both a la carte and all-inclusive resorts differ in whether OTA bookings earn loyalty credit.
• Your family is combining the trip with a cruise. Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic host cruise embarkation; Costa Rica hosts cruise port calls only. Choose based on the cruise itinerary.
• You want a truly quiet, low-crowd Caribbean. Consider quieter alternatives (Vieques for Puerto Rico, Samana for Dominican Republic, Nosara or Uvita for Costa Rica) rather than the marquee family zones covered here.
• You have specific accessibility needs. Puerto Rico ADA infrastructure is highest of the three; verify resort-specific accessibility features via ShopBack Travel Planner filters before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best Caribbean family vacation from the US for 2026: Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, or Dominican Republic?

It depends on three variables. Puerto Rico wins for US families who want passport-free travel, short flights (2 to 4 hours from East Coast, 8 to 11 hours from West Coast with one stop), and USD-only spending. Costa Rica wins for families with kids age 7 and up who want rainforest, volcano, and wildlife immersion beyond a beach. Dominican Republic wins for families with young kids (under 7) who want the fixed-price predictability of an all-inclusive resort at Punta Cana or Puerto Plata. All three destinations have hotels and packages you can compare via ShopBack Travel Planner and book through ShopBack partner OTAs including Expedia, Booking.com, Priceline, and Hotels.com before you book to earn cashback.

Do US citizens need a passport for Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, or Dominican Republic in 2026?

Puerto Rico is a US territory, so US citizens do not need a passport; a REAL ID compliant drivers license or state ID is enough for domestic flights to San Juan. Adults 18 and older still need a TSA-approved ID at the gate. Costa Rica requires a valid US passport with at least one blank page and typically six months of validity remaining beyond the departure date, and grants US citizens 180 days visa-free on arrival. Dominican Republic requires a valid US passport plus a completed free e-ticket immigration form filed within 72 hours before arrival; the tourist card fee is bundled into most airline tickets. Verify passport validity at least 90 days before departure for both Costa Rica and Dominican Republic; renewal can take 6 to 8 weeks.

How much does a Caribbean family vacation cost from the US for a family of four in 2026?

Round-trip economy flights per adult from US East Coast run roughly USD 200 to 450 to Puerto Rico, USD 300 to 600 to Costa Rica (San Jose or Liberia), and USD 250 to 500 to Dominican Republic (Punta Cana or Puerto Plata), shoulder-season indicative. For a family of four across seven nights: Puerto Rico total roughly USD 3,750 to 6,800 including hotel, food, car rental, and activities on an a la carte model; Costa Rica total roughly USD 4,950 to 8,800 with domestic transfers and eco-lodge premiums; Dominican Republic total roughly USD 3,310 to 6,570 on an all-inclusive resort model that bundles meals, drinks, and pool access. Compare live nightly rates via ShopBack Travel Planner before locking any single OTA.

Is Puerto Rico or Dominican Republic better for young kids under 7?

Dominican Republic edges out for kids under 7 on pure logistics. All-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana and Puerto Plata bundle meals, drinks, pool access, kids clubs, and shaded beach service into one nightly rate, so parents are not managing separate restaurant reservations, water refills, or activity budgets across a fatigued toddler day. Puerto Rico is close behind and wins on flight simplicity (no passport, no international arrivals hall, no e-ticket form), but the a la carte model demands more parental planning across each meal and outing. Costa Rica is the least suitable for under-7 travellers because eco-lodge itineraries, hanging bridges, night hikes, and long shuttle transfers stretch attention spans thin. Compare kid-club amenities and pool photos via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking.

When is hurricane season in the Caribbean and how does it affect family trips to these three destinations?

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with peak activity typically August through mid-October. Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic sit squarely in this Atlantic-basin risk zone, and both can see resort closures or flight disruptions during named storms. Costa Rica sits south of the main Atlantic hurricane track, so its Pacific coast (Guanacaste, Manuel Antonio) is essentially hurricane-free but does have a green-season rain pattern May through November with heavy afternoon showers. For a family trip during peak hurricane months, Costa Rica Pacific coast is the safer weather bet, followed by southern Dominican Republic, with Puerto Rico most exposed. Book flexible-cancellation hotel rates and consider travel insurance; activate cashback via ShopBack at Expedia or Booking.com before you book to keep the flexibility premium partly offset.

What Caribbean destination has the best all-inclusive resorts for US families?

Dominican Republic leads on all-inclusive scale, especially Punta Cana and Puerto Plata, where the concentration of family-branded all-inclusives (with waterparks, kids clubs, teen zones, and multiple restaurants inside the same fence) is the highest in the Caribbean. Costa Rica has a smaller all-inclusive segment concentrated in Guanacaste (Papagayo Peninsula) at higher nightly rates than Dominican Republic. Puerto Rico has fewer traditional all-inclusive resorts; most family stays there are a la carte, resort-plus-dining or Airbnb-plus-restaurants. To compare all-inclusive nightly rates apples-to-apples across the three destinations, check hotel listings via ShopBack Travel Planner and book flights via ShopBack partners to earn cashback on the flight leg separately.

Are Costa Rica and Puerto Rico better than Dominican Republic for older kids on beach-plus-nature?

Costa Rica is the clear winner for older kids who can hike, zipline, and sit through a wildlife-spotting boat tour. A one-week Costa Rica family itinerary typically combines Arenal Volcano (hot springs, hanging bridges, La Fortuna waterfall), followed by Manuel Antonio (national park with monkeys and sloths plus a family beach) or Guanacaste (surf lessons, catamaran snorkel). Puerto Rico offers a lighter version of this mix: El Yunque National Forest hikes plus Rincon surf beaches or Culebra day trip. Dominican Republic is more beach-and-pool concentrated with side trips to Los Haitises or 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua available but less central to the trip shape. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to find nature-adjacent properties that suit a mixed itinerary.

Should US families worry about safety in Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, or Dominican Republic in 2026?

All three destinations host millions of US family visitors annually and standard tourist zones are broadly considered safe for family travel. The US State Department maintains ongoing travel advisories for each; check current advisory levels close to departure. Puerto Rico, as US soil, benefits from familiar US law enforcement and healthcare infrastructure, and San Juan tourist zones (Condado, Isla Verde, Old San Juan) are well policed. Costa Rica has a stable democracy, no standing army, and low violent crime in tourist zones; petty theft near beaches is the main risk. Dominican Republic tourist zones (Punta Cana resort corridor, Puerto Plata) are generally low-risk when inside resort fencing; excursions outside gated zones should be booked through the resort. For all three, standard precautions apply: safe-deposit valuables, avoid isolated beach walks after dark, use resort-arranged transfers not street taxis.

Can I use ShopBack cashback when booking a Caribbean family vacation from the US?

Yes. Activate cashback via ShopBack at Expedia, Booking.com, Priceline, or Hotels.com before you book any hotel in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, or Dominican Republic. The cashback rate varies by campaign and merchant, so check the current published rate on each merchant page on ShopBack before starting the booking journey. You can also compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to shortlist properties across all three destinations in one view. For flights, book via ShopBack partners on the flight-booking OTAs to earn cashback on the airfare leg, and the hotel booking earns cashback separately. Do not open a fresh tab to the OTA after clicking through ShopBack; attribution can break.

Where should a first-time Caribbean family from the US start: Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, or Dominican Republic?

Puerto Rico is the most forgiving first Caribbean trip from the US: no passport, no currency change, no language barrier for most needs, familiar mobile carriers, familiar power outlets, familiar road rules if renting a car, and short flight time from most Eastern US airports. It is the lowest-friction option for a family taking a first trip outside the mainland. Dominican Republic is the next step up in complexity but simplified by the all-inclusive resort model that absorbs most of the language, currency, and logistics friction inside the resort fence. Costa Rica has the highest planning overhead of the three and is best saved for a second or third Caribbean-adjacent trip when the family is comfortable with international travel logistics. Start comparing all three on ShopBack Travel Planner to see how the price bands overlap on your specific dates.

What is the cheapest way to book flights and hotels for Costa Rica?

Pick your travel months first, fly into the airport closest to your first base (SJO near San Jose or LIR in Guanacaste), and compare the same dates as a package and as separate flight and hotel on two or three sites such as Expedia, Priceline and Booking.com. As an indicative guide, East Coast round-trips run about USD 300 to 600 per adult in shoulder months. Go through ShopBack before you check out so the trip costs you less.

Which airport should I fly into for Costa Rica, SJO or LIR?

According to the Costa Rica Tourism Board, Juan Santamaria International (SJO) near San Jose is the main airport, and Daniel Oduber Quiros International (LIR) in Liberia mainly serves travelers heading to Guanacaste, Monteverde and La Fortuna. Fly into SJO for Manuel Antonio or the Central Valley and LIR for Guanacaste beaches, and price an open-jaw ticket if you plan both.

When is the dry season in Costa Rica?

According to the Costa Rica Tourism Board, the Pacific side has a dry season from December to March, with April as a transition month, and a rainy season from May to October. The Caribbean side has no well-defined dry season, with relatively dry spells in February to March and September to October.

Which US airlines fly to Costa Rica?

The Costa Rica Tourism Board lists Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Sun Country Airlines and United Airlines among the airlines flying to Costa Rica at the time of writing, with Fly Breeze listed for late 2026. Routes and schedules change, so check the airline for your city.

Is Expedia or Priceline cheaper for flights to Costa Rica?

Neither is always cheaper. Expedia and Priceline both sell flights, hotels and flight-plus-hotel packages, and the same dates can price differently on each. Compare the total with taxes, cancellation terms and change rules on both, then go through ShopBack before you check out on the one you pick.
