• Do not buy a JR Pass for a Tokyo plus Kyoto plus Nara-day-trip itinerary. Point-to-point is USD 65 to 150 cheaper.
• Do not book Golden Week (April 29 to May 5) or New Year (Dec 25 to Jan 5) for a budget-conscious first-time trip. The premium is 40 to 90% on flights and hotels.
• Do not rely solely on Google Translate for Kyoto restaurant reservations. Some ryokan and higher-end kaiseki restaurants require phone or fax reservation with basic Japanese. Use the hotel concierge or Viator's dining-reservation service.
