United Award Hotels vs Marriott Bonvoy vs Hilton Honors: US 2026

Airline miles are for flights. That is the short version. But every US traveler with a MileagePlus balance eventually stares at the "Book a hotel with miles" tab on United's site and wonders if it is worth it, especially when the flight redemption they wanted priced at 90,000 miles and the vacation is still six weeks out. This guide walks the three main US hotel-points paths in 2026: United MileagePlus Award Hotels, Marriott Bonvoy direct, and Hilton Honors direct. When each wins, when each loses, and how transfer partners and cash plus points reshape the math.

The verdict

For US travelers in 2026, using United MileagePlus miles on hotels is almost never the best move. Miles convert to hotel value at roughly 0.5 to 0.8 cents each, while a well-timed Marriott off-peak or Hilton dynamic low returns 0.9 to 1.5 cents per point at direct hotel programs.

Marriott Bonvoy wins the default US hotel award redemption in 2026. The 8-category chart runs from 5,000 points per night at Category 1 off-peak to 100,000 at Category 8 peak (Award Travel Finder). A new Category 8-plus band at select luxury properties like the St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort pushes to 120,000 points at peak.

Marriott raised award pricing 5 to 10 percent on average across the portfolio in 2026, with individual properties climbing 2 to 16 percent (Business Class Journal). The 5th-night-free benefit on award stays plus a 1:1 transfer ratio from Chase Ultimate Rewards keep Marriott the strongest cross-market redemption path for most US travelers. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to check the cash rate you would be offsetting.

Hilton Honors wins on the top-end luxury sweet spots and on Hampton, Tru, and Home2 for road trips. The program uses fully dynamic pricing with no published chart, ranging from about 5,000 points at budget properties in low-demand markets to 150,000-plus at Waldorf Astoria peak per third-party trackers (Award Travel Keeper). Hilton Aspire cardholders get a free night with no property cap, which at Waldorf Astoria clears one of the strongest single-certificate values in the US market. Activate cashback via ShopBack before checkout at eligible online partners when the cash rate is what you would otherwise pay.

United MileagePlus Award Hotels is the third-choice path for most US travelers. United's hotel redemption engine is dynamic and rarely clears the 1 cent per mile line that flights routinely deliver, so miles spent on hotels underperform miles spent on flights by 2 to 3 times. Use MileagePlus miles on hotels only if the balance is small enough to expire, the specific property shows a redemption at or above 0.9 cents per mile, or the last-minute cash rate has spiked and MileagePlus lags. Start at shopback.com/booking-com to see cashback offers on hotel bookings when a straight cash pay makes more sense than any award redemption.

Why airline miles on hotels almost always underperform

Airline loyalty programs are optimized to sell flight redemptions. That is the product. When an airline loyalty program lets you burn miles on a hotel, the conversion is usually run at a rate that quietly nudges you back toward the flight redemption.

The mechanics are simple. A hotel loyalty program like Marriott or Hilton buys the room from itself at the marginal cost of housekeeping plus utilities, which is dramatically less than the cash rate a guest would pay. An airline loyalty program buying the same room from Marriott or Hilton pays a wholesale rate close to the cash rate, then passes that cost along to the mile-redeeming traveler. The result is that airline hotel-award engines return roughly half to two-thirds of the value per point that a direct hotel award returns on the same night.

United MileagePlus Award Hotels is a good example. The engine draws from a dynamic inventory pool with pricing that tracks cash rates, so on a night when the property costs $200 in cash, the mileage cost typically lands around 25,000 to 40,000 miles depending on demand and property tier. That is 0.5 to 0.8 cents per mile. Meanwhile, the same 25,000 to 40,000 United miles on a domestic United flight often clears 1.5 to 2.5 cents per mile of value, especially on last-minute or peak-date routes (The Points Guy).

The gap widens on international premium cabins. A 60,000-mile United Polaris redemption to Europe can clear 3 cents per mile or higher based on published cash rates for the same seat. Redeeming the same 60,000 miles at 0.6 cents per mile on a $360 hotel booking is a factor-of-five downgrade in per-mile value. That is why every points and miles editor writes some variant of "airline miles are for flights" every year.

Two exceptions are worth naming. First, small stranded balances. If a traveler holds 8,000 to 12,000 United miles that would otherwise expire under the account inactivity window, converting them to a partial hotel night at 0.6 cents per mile is better than watching them go to zero. Second, last-minute peak windows. When a hotel's cash rate spikes into a holiday weekend and the MileagePlus dynamic engine lags a day or two behind the cash market, the mile-per-cent value on the hotel side can briefly clear 1 cent, at which point the redemption is defensible.

For everyone else with a healthy MileagePlus balance and a US hotel to book, the right instinct is to transfer credit-card points to Marriott or Hilton directly, or pay cash and go through ShopBack before you book so part of the cost comes back, alongside the loyalty program points you would earn anyway.

Marriott Bonvoy in 2026: the default US redemption path

Marriott is the largest hotel loyalty program in the world, with more than 8,500 properties across 30-plus brands, and the 2026 award chart remains the most useful published redemption tool in the US market.

The chart. Marriott Bonvoy prices award nights in 8 categories, each with off-peak, standard, and peak tiers. Category 1 off-peak starts at 5,000 points per night; Category 8 peak reaches 100,000 points per night (Award Travel Finder). In 2026, Marriott introduced a Category 8-plus pricing band that applies to select ultra-luxury properties, with the St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort pushing nightly rates to 120,000 points at peak per third-party award chart trackers.

2026 adjustments. Marriott raised award pricing 5 to 10 percent on average across the portfolio in 2026, with individual properties climbing 2 to 16 percent (Business Class Journal). Off-peak pricing was preserved as a lever, meaning travelers who can flex dates by a week or two often still find pre-devaluation-equivalent rates at properties that adjusted their standard and peak tiers.

Point value. Marriott Bonvoy points are worth roughly 0.7 to 0.9 cents each on average across the portfolio in 2026 (Award Travel Finder). Off-peak Category 3 to 5 US redemptions consistently clear the 1 cent per point line, which is why the sweet spot for a US traveler in 2026 is a suburban Marriott Category 3 or a resort Category 5 off-peak, not the flagship Ritz or St Regis.

5th-night-free. All Marriott award stays of five consecutive nights get the 5th night free, a 20 percent discount that stacks with off-peak pricing. This is the strongest built-in Marriott perk for US road-trip travelers and family beach stays.

Chase transfer route. Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer to Marriott at 1:1. A US traveler with 60,000 Ultimate Rewards points holding a Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve can move those points into Bonvoy for a Category 4 or 5 off-peak stay, which typically returns 0.9 to 1.2 cents per point of value on the redemption. That beats most Chase Ultimate Rewards redemptions through the Chase travel portal in cents-per-point terms.

Where Marriott struggles. Peak-tier Category 6 to 8 US properties (think Miami Ritz or Aspen St Regis in high season) rarely clear the 1 cent per point line and are better paid in cash, especially when cash promotional rates run. Marriott's dynamic pricing exceptions and property recategorizations mid-year also mean travelers should verify the specific property's current cost at marriott.com before locking in the redemption plan.

Where ShopBack fits. Start at shopback.com/marriott-international to see live cashback offers alongside your comparison when a cash-paid Marriott stay looks better than a points redemption. ShopBack cashback on a cash Marriott booking posts to the ShopBack account separately from any Bonvoy points earned on the same stay.

Hilton Honors in 2026: dynamic pricing with real sweet spots

Hilton Honors moved to fully dynamic pricing years ago and has no published award chart in 2026. That makes the program harder to plan against but leaves real value windows for travelers who watch dates carefully.

The range. Hilton Honors pricing ranges from about 5,000 to 150,000-plus points per night in 2026, depending on the property, brand tier, and demand (Award Travel Finder). Budget properties like Hampton Inn and Tru start at 5,000 to 25,000 points per night in lower-demand markets; standard Hilton Hotels and Resorts typically run 30,000 to 80,000 points; luxury Conrad properties require 60,000 to 130,000 points; Waldorf Astoria properties can reach 80,000 to 150,000-plus points at peak per third-party trackers.

Point value. Hilton Honors points are worth roughly 0.4 to 0.6 cents each on average across the portfolio in 2026. That is lower than Marriott's average per-point value, but the top-end Aspire free-night sweet spots and the 5th-night-free benefit for Silver, Gold and Diamond members can push specific redemptions well above 1 cent per point.

5th-night-free. Hilton Honors offers a 5th night free on award stays but only for Silver, Gold and Diamond elite members. That is a meaningful gate. A traveler holding the Hilton Aspire card gets automatic Diamond status, which unlocks the 5th-night benefit and typically pushes a Waldorf Astoria weeklong stay from a marginal redemption to a strong one.

Aspire free night. The Hilton Honors Aspire card comes with an annual free-night certificate valid at almost any Hilton property, with no fixed point-value cap. Applying that certificate at a Waldorf Astoria that would otherwise cost 150,000 points delivers one of the highest single-certificate values in the US hotel-loyalty market. This is the strongest single reason a US traveler with a Hilton Aspire card should route peak luxury stays through Hilton, not Marriott.

Amex transfer route. American Express Membership Rewards transfer to Hilton Honors at 1:2. For a US traveler holding 60,000 Membership Rewards points, that becomes 120,000 Hilton points, enough for a peak Conrad night or a mid-range Waldorf Astoria night. The 1:2 ratio partly offsets Hilton's lower per-point value: after transfer, each Membership Rewards point returns roughly 0.9 to 1.2 cents of hotel value, comparable to Chase-to-Marriott math.

Where Hilton struggles. Mid-tier standard Hiltons in high-demand US markets (downtown, resort destinations, event weekends) often price at 60,000 to 80,000 points per night with cash rates that would clear a lower cents-per-point value than the Category 5 off-peak Marriott alternative. Travelers who hold both currencies typically find Marriott is the cleaner default and Hilton is the luxury and road-trip specialist.

Where ShopBack fits. Hilton does not have a ShopBack store. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to see whether a cash stay through a ShopBack store such as Booking.com or Expedia beats the Hilton award redemption in dollar terms, keeping in mind that Hilton generally does not award Honors points or elite credit on third-party bookings.

United MileagePlus Award Hotels in 2026: when it makes sense

United's hotel-award engine draws from a dynamic inventory pool and prices in miles at rates that track cash rates plus a wholesale markup. Every US MileagePlus member has access to it. Very few should use it as the default.

How it works. The MileagePlus Award Hotels tab on united.com lets members redeem MileagePlus miles for hotel stays across a broad partner inventory that overlaps with third-party OTA supply. Pricing is dynamic. There is no published category chart. Redemption values typically land at 0.5 to 0.8 cents per mile (Award Travel Finder).

When it makes sense. Three cases:

1. Small stranded balances. If a MileagePlus balance is under 15,000 miles and approaching the expiration window, converting to a partial hotel night at 0.6 cents per mile beats letting the miles go to zero.
2. Last-minute peak windows. When a cash rate spikes into a holiday weekend and the MileagePlus dynamic engine lags a day or two behind, the mile-per-cent value on a specific hotel can briefly clear 1 cent, at which point the redemption is defensible.
3. Cash plus miles hybrid at low mile counts. MileagePlus Award Hotels offers a cash plus miles slider that lets a traveler pay part cash and part miles, useful for topping off a booking when the cash rate is a little high but not high enough for a full-mile redemption.

When it does not. For any planned stay booked more than 30 days out with a cash rate under $200 per night, direct Marriott or Hilton redemptions almost always beat United's hotel path on cents per point. That is the default rule.

Better uses for MileagePlus miles. United domestic flights, especially last-minute or peak-date routes, clear 1.5 to 2.5 cents per mile of value on Saver awards. Star Alliance partner flights on ANA, Lufthansa, Turkish, or Singapore Airlines premium cabins routinely clear 3-plus cents per mile. Either of these dominates a hotel redemption at 0.6 cents per mile (The Points Guy).

How ShopBack fits. When United MileagePlus Award Hotels does not clear the value bar, pay cash for the hotel and go through ShopBack before you pay. Booking Marriott through the ShopBack Marriott store keeps Bonvoy points on the paid rate; bookings through OTAs such as Booking.com or Expedia usually do not earn hotel loyalty points.

Transfer partner math: how credit card points reshape the choice

Where you hold your credit card points changes which hotel program wins.

Chase Ultimate Rewards. Transfers to Marriott Bonvoy at 1:1 and to United MileagePlus at 1:1. Does not transfer to Hilton Honors. For a US Chase-holder with the Sapphire Preferred, Reserve, or Ink cards, Marriott is the default hotel transfer route. Cash out Ultimate Rewards to Marriott at moments when a specific Category 3 to 5 off-peak US redemption clears the 1 cent per point line, otherwise use the Chase travel portal or transfer to a Star Alliance partner instead.

American Express Membership Rewards. Transfers to Hilton Honors at 1:2 and to Marriott Bonvoy at 1:1. Does not transfer to United (Delta is Amex's airline partner). For a US Amex-holder with the Platinum, Gold, or Business Platinum, Hilton is the natural hotel transfer route, especially when the 1:2 ratio pushes a Waldorf Astoria or Conrad redemption into strong per-point territory after transfer.

Citi ThankYou Rewards and Capital One Miles. Neither transfers to United, Marriott Bonvoy, or Hilton Honors directly; their hotel transfer partners are other chains such as Choice and Wyndham. For Citi and Capital One holders, a paid stay is usually the cleaner path to Marriott or Hilton.

Practical routing rule. If you hold Chase, transfer to Marriott. If you hold Amex, transfer to Hilton. If you hold both ecosystems, keep Marriott for the mid-tier Category 3 to 5 sweet spots and Hilton for the top-tier Aspire free-night stays.

How ShopBack fits into card sign-ups. Before applying for a hotel co-branded card (Marriott Bonvoy Boundless, Bonvoy Brilliant, Hilton Aspire, Hilton Surpass), check the ShopBack finance page to see whether that card currently has a Cashback offer, and if it does, go through ShopBack before you apply.

Cash plus points: when the hybrid wins

Both Marriott and Hilton let travelers pay part cash and part points on most award nights. That flexibility often produces the best cents-per-point value for stays that would otherwise fall short of the 1 cent per point line.

Marriott cash plus points. On most Category 3 to 6 properties, Marriott offers a cash plus points slider that adjusts across a range of splits. A typical mid-tier US Marriott might price at 30,000 points per night, or 15,000 points plus $110 cash, or 22,500 points plus $55 cash. Run the math: subtract the cash portion from the property's cash rate, then divide by points used to get the effective cents per point on the hybrid. For a $250 cash rate offering 15,000 points plus $110 cash, the hybrid math is ($250 minus $110) divided by 15,000, or 0.93 cents per point.

Hilton cash plus points. Hilton's cash plus points is offered on most properties without an award chart limit, and often produces stronger per-point value than a straight redemption on properties that price near the top of the dynamic range. On a Waldorf Astoria priced at 150,000 points or 80,000 points plus $400 cash against a $900 cash rate, the hybrid returns ($900 minus $400) divided by 80,000, or 0.63 cents per point. The straight redemption returns $900 divided by 150,000, or 0.6 cents per point. In this case the hybrid is marginally better, and the traveler preserves 70,000 points for a future stay.

United MileagePlus cash plus miles. United's Award Hotels engine occasionally shows cash plus miles options for a partial redemption. These rarely clear better cents per mile than the straight redemption because both sides of the hybrid are priced dynamically against the same cash rate. Use United cash plus miles only when a small mile balance needs to be drawn down.

Rule of thumb. Cash plus points is worth checking whenever the cash rate falls between $200 and $500 per night and the straight redemption returns under 0.8 cents per point. The hybrid preserves points for future use and often nudges the effective value above 0.9 cents per point.

How ShopBack fits. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to see the current cash rate against the property's award price. That comparison surfaces whether a straight redemption, a hybrid, or a cash booking through a ShopBack cashback partner delivers the best total value for the specific stay.

Four traveler archetypes, mapped to the right program

Match your travel pattern to the closest archetype below.

Traveler archetype	Best program	Redemption strategy	Why
US road tripper, Hampton and Home2 stays	Hilton Honors	Direct redemptions on budget brands; use 5th-night-free if Silver or above	Hampton and Tru redemptions clear 1 cent per point regularly in lower-demand markets
Family beach or ski trip, mid-tier resort	Marriott Bonvoy	Category 4 to 6 off-peak plus 5th-night-free	Off-peak plus 5th night stacks; strongest US family points value
Peak luxury one-off (Waldorf, Ritz, St Regis)	Hilton (Aspire cert) or Marriott (Brilliant cert)	Free-night certificate at high-cash-rate property	Certificate value ceiling beats straight redemption at peak
Frequent US business traveler with MileagePlus balance	Book cash through ShopBack; keep MileagePlus for flights	Cashback on cash Marriott or OTA bookings; miles preserved for United flight upgrades	Flight redemptions clear 2-3x hotel redemption value on MileagePlus

The single biggest mistake US travelers make is burning MileagePlus miles on a hotel when the same miles would clear 2.5 cents per mile on a domestic United flight redemption a month later. If the MileagePlus balance is meaningful (30,000-plus miles), preserve it for flights, pay cash for the hotel and go through ShopBack before you pay (the ShopBack Marriott store keeps Bonvoy points on the paid rate).

---

Elite status: hotel-side wins over airline-side for hotels

Elite status is where the hotel-vs-airline choice sharpens most clearly.

Marriott Bonvoy Platinum requires 50 nights per year and delivers suite upgrades where available, lounge access at qualifying brands, guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout, and a 50 percent bonus on base points. For a US business traveler running 50-plus hotel nights per year, Platinum is the strongest hotel status in the market for suite-upgrade rate.

Hilton Honors Diamond requires 60 nights, 30 stays or 120,000 base points per year and delivers executive lounge access at qualifying brands, room upgrades subject to availability, and a fifth-night-free benefit on award stays. Hilton Aspire cardholders receive Diamond by default without hitting the nights threshold, which is one of the most valuable card-conferred status perks in the US market.

United MileagePlus Premier tiers deliver airline-side benefits (upgrades, boarding priority, checked bags, Star Alliance status) but confer no hotel-side benefits. A traveler prioritizing hotel-side status should anchor on Bonvoy or Honors first and treat MileagePlus status as an airline-only currency.

Cross-status. Marriott and Hilton do not have cross-brand elite matches to each other. Both offer status matches from lower-tier programs (Wyndham, IHG, small-chain programs) with varying success. Star Alliance partner airline status does not confer any Marriott or Hilton hotel status.

Practical elite path for a US traveler in 2026. If you spend 30 to 50 nights per year in hotels, the credit-card-conferred status route (Hilton Aspire for Diamond, Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant for Platinum-adjacent perks) is often better cost-per-benefit than chasing nights.

When ShopBack cashback beats the whole redemption calculus

For any US hotel stay where the cash rate is under $250 per night and the total booking is under $1,000, the cash-paid path through a ShopBack partner often wins over any points redemption on a total-dollars-out basis.

The math is straightforward. Cashback on hotel bookings via ShopBack posts on the paid rate. Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors points earned on the paid rate accrue at 10 base points per dollar (Marriott) or 10 base points per dollar (Hilton), plus elite bonuses. A traveler paying $200 per night for two nights at a Marriott through a ShopBack partner earns cashback plus 4,000 to 6,000-plus Bonvoy points (base plus elite bonuses), a credit card rewards layer, and preserves any transferable points and MileagePlus miles for a future higher-value redemption.

Compared to a straight points redemption at 30,000 Bonvoy points per night (60,000 total), the cash path costs $400 out of pocket but preserves 60,000 points that at 0.9 cents per point represents $540 of future value. The trade is spending $400 now to preserve $540 later, plus earning cashback on the $400.

Rule of thumb. If the property is priced at 25,000-plus points per night, check the live Cashback rate on the store's ShopBack page, run the cash path and preserve the points. If the cash rate is very high or the property redeems at strong off-peak Category 3 to 5 sweet spot, the points redemption may win.

How ShopBack fits. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to see live cashback rates alongside your comparison for the specific property, and to see whether a cash-paid alternative delivers stronger total value than the award redemption you were planning.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use United miles to book a hotel in 2026?

Usually no. United MileagePlus Award Hotels values each mile at roughly 0.5 to 0.8 cents when redeemed on a hotel, well below the 1.5 to 2 cents per mile on a United flight redemption. Exception: small stranded balances (under 15,000 miles) or the rare last-minute peak window when the specific property clears at or above 0.9 cents per mile. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to check the cash rate you would be offsetting.

What is the Marriott Bonvoy 2026 award chart range?

Marriott Bonvoy uses an 8-category chart in 2026, ranging from 5,000 points per night at Category 1 off-peak to 100,000 at Category 8 peak, plus a new Category 8-plus band pushing select luxury properties like the St Regis Maldives to 120,000 points at peak per third-party trackers (Award Travel Finder). Marriott raised award pricing 5 to 10 percent on average across the portfolio in 2026, with individual properties climbing 2 to 16 percent (Business Class Journal). Verify the specific property at marriott.com.

How does Hilton Honors dynamic pricing work in 2026?

Hilton Honors uses fully dynamic pricing in 2026 with no published chart. Budget brands like Hampton Inn and Tru start at 5,000 to 25,000 points per night in lower-demand markets, standard Hilton Hotels and Resorts run 30,000 to 80,000 points, and luxury Waldorf Astoria properties can reach 80,000 to 150,000-plus points at peak per third-party trackers (Award Travel Finder). Points required per night vary by property, date, and demand, and can move in real time with cash demand.

Can I transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to Marriott or Hilton?

Yes to Marriott (1:1). No to Hilton directly. Hilton pairs with American Express Membership Rewards at a 1:2 ratio instead. Chase Ultimate Rewards also transfers to United MileagePlus at 1:1, though as noted the MileagePlus hotel path is rarely worth the transfer. For a Chase-heavy US traveler, Marriott is the natural hotel-transfer route in 2026.

When does cash plus points beat a straight award booking?

Cash plus points typically wins when the property's cash rate is under about $200 per night and the points portion clears at 0.6 cents per point or better on the hybrid. Both Marriott and Hilton offer cash plus points on most properties. Run the math: (cash rate minus cash portion) divided by points used equals cents per point on the hybrid. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to see the current cash rate you would be offsetting.

Which loyalty program has the best US free-night certificate in 2026?

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless (35,000 point value) and Brilliant (85,000 point value) free-night certificates offer strong single-night ceilings when paired with a property that prices near the cap. Hilton Aspire's annual free-night certificate has no fixed cap and can be used at any Hilton property including Waldorf Astoria, occasionally clearing 150,000-plus points and delivering the highest single-certificate value in the US market. United does not offer a hotel free-night certificate on its MileagePlus card program.

Do I earn cashback when booking hotels through ShopBack?

Yes. Activate cashback via ShopBack before checkout at eligible online partners: start at shopback.com, click through to hotel partners like Booking.com, Hotels.com, Expedia, or Marriott, and complete the booking in one session so the click is tracked. Cashback tracks on eligible booking value on each partner's ShopBack merchant page and posts to your ShopBack account separately from any Bonvoy points, Honors points, or MileagePlus miles you earn on the same stay.

Are United Award Hotels worth it for last-minute stays?

Occasionally. Last-minute bookings sometimes surface United Award Hotels rates that clear 0.9 to 1.1 cents per mile because cash rates spike while the MileagePlus dynamic engine lags. For that specific case, burning a small stranded balance is reasonable. For any planned stay booked more than 30 days out, direct Marriott or Hilton redemptions almost always beat United's hotel path on cents per point.

Compare the three programs on US elite status benefits?

For hotel-side benefits, Marriott Bonvoy Platinum (50 nights per year) and Hilton Honors Diamond (60 nights, 30 stays or 120,000 base points per year) are the two strongest US tiers in 2026. Both offer suite upgrades where available, lounge access at qualifying brands, and late checkout. Hilton Aspire cardholders receive Diamond by default. United MileagePlus elite status confers no hotel-side benefits, which is why hotel-heavy travelers anchor on Bonvoy or Honors first.

Where does ShopBack fit into hotel booking for US travelers?

Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to see live cashback rates alongside cash and points comparisons for the property you want. ShopBack lists eligible hotel booking partners including Booking.com, Hotels.com, Expedia, and Marriott, so a US traveler who goes through ShopBack before booking gets part of the cost back as Cashback. Cashback via ShopBack posts to your ShopBack account and works with any card. Booking Marriott through the ShopBack Marriott store keeps Bonvoy points on the paid rate; OTA bookings usually do not earn hotel loyalty points.

Key takeaways

• United MileagePlus Award Hotels rarely beats direct hotel loyalty programs in 2026. Miles clear 0.5 to 0.8 cents on hotel redemptions vs 1.5 to 2.5 cents on United flight redemptions.
• Marriott Bonvoy is the default US redemption path: 8-category chart, 5,000 to 100,000 points per night, 5th-night-free on all award stays, 1:1 transfer from Chase Ultimate Rewards.
• Marriott raised award pricing 5 to 10 percent on average in 2026, with property-level variance of 2 to 16 percent; off-peak pricing was preserved as a lever for flexible-date travelers.
• Hilton Honors is fully dynamic in 2026 with real sweet spots at Hampton and Tru (5,000 to 25,000 points) and Waldorf Astoria via the Aspire free-night certificate.
• Chase transfers to Marriott 1:1 and to United 1:1 but not to Hilton. Amex transfers to Hilton 1:2 and to Marriott 1:1 but not to United. Route transfers by which card ecosystem you hold.
• Cash plus points is worth checking whenever cash rates are $200 to $500 per night; hybrid math often clears above 0.9 cents per point.
• For any US hotel under $250 per night and $1,000 total, booking cash through a ShopBack partner often beats a straight points redemption on total-dollars-out, and preserves transferable points for higher-value redemptions later.
• MileagePlus miles are for flights. Preserve them for United domestic peak windows or Star Alliance partner premium cabins where they clear 2.5 to 3-plus cents per mile.
• Before applying for a co-branded hotel card (Bonvoy Boundless, Bonvoy Brilliant, Hilton Aspire, Hilton Surpass), check the ShopBack finance page for a current Cashback offer and go through ShopBack before you apply if there is one.
• Verify current award pricing directly at marriott.com, hilton.com, and united.com before locking in any redemption plan, since Marriott's 2026 chart adjustments, Hilton's dynamic drift, and United's dynamic engine all move through the year.
