For travelers from the US, the cheaper times to visit Japan are usually mid-January to early March, late May to June, and September to mid-October, avoiding Japanese holidays. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), the fewest US visitors arrived in January (182,556) and February (191,494) in 2025, against 345,150 in June. Compare dates on Expedia, Trip.com and Klook, then go through ShopBack US before you book.
ShopBack US is a cashback site and app for shoppers and travelers in the United States. The last step before you book flights or hotels: open ShopBack, tap the booking site and book as normal, so the same trip costs you less. You can sign up for ShopBack in a couple of minutes and start your Japan booking from the Expedia, Trip.com or Klook store page.
How we worked this out. We used JNTO's monthly visitor arrival statistics for 2025 and January to August 2026 (US arrivals and all arrivals), Japan's Cabinet Office list of national holidays for 2026 and 2027, Japan Meteorological Agency cherry blossom and rainy season data, the official JAPAN RAIL PASS price list, and the loyalty terms Trip.com publishes. Arrival counts show demand, not fares, but busy months usually push flight and hotel prices up. Figures are as published at the time of writing.
The verdict
The best time to visit Japan for cheaper flights and hotels is when fewer people travel: after New Year and before cherry blossom, or in the shoulder weeks of early summer and early autumn. Three choices move the price more than any promo code:
- Which month: JNTO counted 182,556 US visitors in January 2025 and 194,525 in August, against 342,752 in March and 345,150 in June.
- Which holidays you avoid: Golden Week (April 29 to May 5 in 2027), Obon in mid-August and New Year are when Japan itself travels.
- Where you stay: Tokyo and Kyoto peak hardest in cherry blossom and autumn leaf season; Osaka, Fukuoka and Sapporo outside ski season can be easier on the budget.
Then make the booking cost less: compare the total price on Expedia and Trip.com, use member rates you qualify for, and go through ShopBack before you pay.

When is the best time to visit Japan for cheaper flights and hotels?
The cheapest window for most US travelers is mid-January to early March, after the New Year holidays and before cherry blossom season. JNTO data shows that January and February 2025 had the fewest US arrivals of the year, 182,556 and 191,494, then March jumped to 342,752 as blossom season started.
Two more windows usually offer good value:
- Late May to June. After Golden Week, domestic travel drops. June is Japan's rainy season (the Japan Meteorological Agency puts the normal season for the Tokyo region at about June 7 to July 19), which keeps some travelers away. Note that US arrivals were high in June 2025 (345,150) because of US summer break, so book flights early.
- September to mid-October. Typhoon risk and late summer heat keep September quieter: JNTO counted 224,793 US visitors in September 2025, against 335,744 in October. Autumn leaves draw crowds from November, especially in Kyoto.
Avoid the dates when Japan itself travels. Hotels in popular cities often price highest then, even if your flight is not.
Cheapest month to visit Japan from the US: month-by-month data
US arrivals to Japan by month in 2025, according to JNTO:
| Month | US visitors | Month | US visitors |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 182,556 | July | 277,080 |
| February | 191,494 | August | 194,525 |
| March | 342,752 | September | 224,793 |
| April | 327,542 | October | 335,744 |
| May | 311,933 | November | 302,547 |
| June | 345,150 | December | 270,704 |
Read the table like a demand chart. The four quietest months for US travelers were January, February, August and September. The busiest were June, March, October and April. Prices for flights from the US usually follow US demand, while Japanese hotel prices also follow domestic holidays and the total number of visitors from every country.
August is a special case. US arrivals dip because of the heat, but Obon in mid-August is one of Japan's biggest domestic travel weeks (Mountain Day, a national holiday, fell on August 11 in 2026). Flights from the US can be reasonable while hotels and trains inside Japan are busy, so check both before you book.
Seasonal highlights and the price you pay for them:
- Cherry blossom (late March to early April): According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Tokyo's normal first-bloom date is March 24, and in 2026 the trees opened on March 19. This is usually the most expensive time for hotels in Tokyo and Kyoto.
- Autumn leaves (November): Kyoto and Nikko are the classic spots, and prices rise with demand.
- Ski season (December to March): Hokkaido and Nagano resorts peak while cities are quiet.
Best time to visit Japan in 2026 and early 2027
The best remaining 2026 dates for value are mid-October and late November to mid-December, then mid-January to early March 2027. Japan has several holidays in that stretch, according to the Cabinet Office:
- Sports Day: Monday, October 12, 2026
- Culture Day: Tuesday, November 3, 2026
- Labor Thanksgiving Day: Monday, November 23, 2026
- New Year's Day: Friday, January 1, 2027, with most people off for several days around it
- Coming of Age Day: Monday, January 11, 2027
- Spring Equinox Day: Sunday, March 21, 2027, with Monday, March 22 also a holiday
- Golden Week 2027: Showa Day on Thursday, April 29, then Monday, May 3 to Wednesday, May 5
Three-day weekends make domestic trips popular, so hotels in resort and hot spring towns often cost more on those dates. Plan city stays and long train rides for midweek.
Japan is busy in 2026. JNTO data shows 2,305,300 US visitors from January to August 2026, up 6.1% on the same months of 2025. Across all countries, Japan welcomed a record 42,683,301 international visitors in 2025. Even quiet months are fuller than they were a few years ago, so booking two to four months ahead is often safer than waiting for a last-minute drop.
Best time to visit Japan: best deals for US travelers in 2026
The best Japan deals usually come from timing plus booking method, not from one code. A practical order to follow:
- Pick the month. Mid-January to early March is usually cheapest; late May to June and September to mid-October are good shoulder windows.
- Avoid Japanese holidays. Golden Week, Obon and New Year push up domestic prices.
- Compare flight and hotel together and separately. A bundle can be cheaper, but not every time.
- Use member rates. Expedia's One Key and Trip.com Rewards can lower the price on eligible bookings.
- Plan rail costs. According to the official JAPAN RAIL PASS site, a 7-day Ordinary adult pass costs 50,000 yen online or 53,000 yen through an overseas agency. Check whether your route needs it before you buy.
- Open ShopBack before you pay. Once the booking tracks, part of the eligible spend comes back as cash, which lowers what the trip costs you.
Cashback lowers what you actually pay for an order. It comes back as cash, so it works like a discount on the price, not like points or miles. Your effective price is what you pay minus the cash ShopBack returns.
Expedia vs Trip.com for Japan: price comparison
Neither Expedia nor Trip.com is cheaper every time for Japan flights and hotels. Prices for the same flight or Tokyo hotel can differ by fare class, room type, cancellation terms and member rate, and they change daily. The reliable approach is to compare the same booking, same dates and same terms on both sites, with the total price shown.
What each site's own programme offers, at the time of writing:
- Trip.com Rewards is free and has six tiers, from Silver to Black Diamond. According to Trip.com, 100 Trip Coins are worth about US$1.00 and can be used like cash on prepaid bookings including flights and hotels. Gold needs 3 eligible bookings, Platinum needs 8 eligible bookings with a minimum of US$1,000, and Diamond needs US$10,000 of spend. Higher tiers earn more Trip Coins.
- Expedia One Key is a free loyalty programme shared by Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo. Members earn OneKeyCash on eligible bookings and can see member prices on some hotels. Check Expedia's One Key terms for the current earn rules.
A simple check: if the two totals are close, pick the one with better cancellation terms or the programme you already use. Whichever you choose, go through ShopBack to that site before you book.
Expedia, Trip.com and Klook for a Japan trip
Each site covers a different part of a Japan trip. Expedia and Trip.com sell flights, hotels and flight plus hotel bundles from the US. Trip.com also lists trains and airport transfers. Klook focuses on what you do once you land, such as attraction and theme park tickets, tours, airport transfers and rail passes.
How ShopBack fits, step by step:
- Pick your dates using the month guide above.
- Open Expedia, Trip.com or Klook from ShopBack US.
- Search and book as usual, with any member rate or code from the site itself.
- Your cashback shows in your ShopBack account once the booking is tracked, and it is confirmed after your trip according to the store's terms.
As an illustration only: on a $2,000 flight and hotel booking at an illustrative 4%, $80 comes back, so the effective price is $1,920. Book a $300 rail pass and tour bundle on Klook at an illustrative 3% and $9 more comes back. Real rates change, so check the live rate on each ShopBack store page before you book, and read the store terms, which explain which bookings are eligible and what happens if you cancel.

Using a travel card with your booking
Usually you can pay with a travel rewards card and still go through ShopBack, because the two come from different providers. Card points come from your bank or card issuer, and ShopBack cash comes from going through ShopBack before you pay. Card offers and airline or hotel programmes have their own rules, so check your card issuer's terms and check the merchant's terms on the ShopBack store page before you count on both.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest month to visit Japan from the US?
January and February are usually the cheapest months to visit Japan from the US, as long as you avoid the New Year holiday in the first days of January. JNTO data shows only 182,556 US visitors arrived in January 2025 and 191,494 in February, the two quietest months of the year, against 345,150 in June. Lower demand usually means lower flight and hotel prices.
When is the most expensive time to visit Japan?
Cherry blossom season in late March and early April, Golden Week from late April to early May, the Obon period in mid-August and the New Year holidays are usually the priciest times. These are when travel demand inside Japan and from abroad peaks, so flights and hotels fill up and prices rise. Book early if you must travel then.
Is it cheaper to visit Japan in winter?
Usually yes, outside the New Year holidays. From mid-January to early March, fewer people travel to Japan: JNTO counted 182,556 US visitors in January 2025 against 342,752 in March. Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto are cold but dry, and ski areas in Hokkaido and Nagano are the exception, since they are in peak season.
When is Golden Week in 2027?
According to Japan's Cabinet Office, the Golden Week holidays in 2027 are Showa Day on Thursday, April 29, then Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day and Children's Day from Monday, May 3 to Wednesday, May 5. Many people in Japan travel that week, so domestic flights, trains and hotels are usually busier and cost more.
When do cherry blossoms bloom in Tokyo?
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Tokyo's cherry trees start flowering on March 24 in a normal year, and they opened on March 19 in 2026. Blossoms usually last about a week or two. This is one of the busiest and most expensive weeks of the year for Japan flights and hotels.
Is Expedia or Trip.com cheaper for Japan flights and hotels?
Neither is cheaper every time. Prices for the same flight or Japan hotel can differ by date, fare type, room type and member rate, so compare the same booking on Expedia and Trip.com with the total price shown. Both have free loyalty programmes, One Key at Expedia and Trip.com Rewards. Then go through ShopBack US to the site you pick before you book.
How much is the Japan Rail Pass?
According to the official JAPAN RAIL PASS site at the time of writing, a 7-day Ordinary pass for an adult costs 50,000 yen when bought online, or 53,000 yen through an overseas agency. A 14-day Ordinary pass is 80,000 yen online and a 21-day pass is 100,000 yen. Green car passes cost more.
Is it cheaper to book flights and hotels to Japan together?
Sometimes. Expedia and Trip.com both sell flight and hotel bundles, and a package can price lower than booking each part separately, but not always. Check the bundle price against the flight and hotel booked on their own for the same dates, and compare the cancellation terms before you choose.
How do I get cash back on a Japan trip booking?
The last step before you book flights or hotels: open ShopBack. Go to Expedia, Trip.com or Klook from ShopBack US, book as usual, and part of the eligible spend comes back as cash. On a $2,000 flight and hotel booking at an illustrative 4%, $80 comes back, so the effective price is $1,920. Check the live rate on the store's ShopBack page.
Are more Americans visiting Japan in 2026?
Yes, so far. JNTO data shows 2,305,300 US visitors arrived in Japan from January to August 2026, up 6.1% on the same months of 2025. In 2025 as a whole, 3,306,820 US visitors went to Japan, part of a record 42.68 million international arrivals. More demand is one more reason to book quiet months early.
Key takeaways
- January and February had the fewest US visitors to Japan in 2025 (182,556 and 191,494, JNTO), and are usually the cheapest months outside New Year.
- Late May to June and September to mid-October are good shoulder windows.
- Avoid cherry blossom week, Golden Week (April 29 to May 5 in 2027), Obon and New Year if price matters most.
- Compare the same booking on Expedia and Trip.com, and use One Key or Trip.com Rewards where they apply.
- The last step before you book: open ShopBack US and go to the booking site from there.
