United MileagePlus Devaluation 2025 vs 2026 vs 2027: A US Flyer's Forecast

Updated: September 2026.

United MileagePlus flyers have watched a slow-motion devaluation unfold over the past decade, but the pace picked up sharply in 2025. Between August and November of last year, United closed the Excursionist Perk, killed the fixed upgrade award chart, and set the stage for a 2027 PlusPoints reset. The next 30 days (October 5 to November 4, 2026) are the window that matters: Thanksgiving is Thursday November 26, holiday Saver space is thinning, and banked PlusPoints have only one more fixed-chart winter ahead of them. Use ShopBack to compare the cash fare on Expedia and Trip.com against the miles price before you decide which legs to redeem and which to pay for.

For US flyers holding six-figure mile balances or reliant on the Newark, Chicago, or Denver hubs, the question is not whether MileagePlus is worse than it was. It is how much more it will move against you in the next eighteen months, and which redemptions still make the cut. This forecast walks through 2025's structural cuts, what actually changes in 2026, and what to expect in 2027 based on the pattern United has followed since eliminating award charts in the first place.

The verdict

The 2025 to 2027 arc looks like this. In 2025, United removed two named perks that reduced program flexibility: the Excursionist stopover-adjacent perk and the fixed upgrade award chart. In 2026, the visible changes are mostly positive at the margins (elite thresholds hold flat, award-ticket upgrade eligibility opens up), but partner dynamic pricing keeps drifting up and the 2027 PlusPoints transition is queued. In 2027, PlusPoints go dynamic in February, which is the change most US flyers should hedge against right now.

For US flyers, the practical read is: burn speculative mile stockpiles on 2026 Saver and PlusPoints redemptions, keep partner Star Alliance business-class sweet spots on the shortlist, and diversify the transferable-points bucket so a Chase Ultimate Rewards balance is not exclusively pointed at MileagePlus. Miles you have already earned still work; the ones you had planned to earn for a 2028 trip are worth less than you thought.

Start at shopback.com/travel before you finalize any 2026 or 2027 booking, since cashback offsets the paid legs of a mixed cash-plus-miles itinerary. That is the layer most MileagePlus content skips, and it is where a US flyer recovers real dollars on the paid hotels and positioning flights around a Saver redemption.

Which booking site to buy from: Expedia vs Trip.com vs Booking.com vs Hotels.com

Every MileagePlus hedge in this article leaves paid legs behind: the positioning flight to a hub, the hotel night around a Saver redemption, the domestic connector that does not price well in miles. The honest answer on where to buy those depends on the leg, and none of these sites changes which airline earns the miles on a paid ticket.

Pick	Best for	When it is cheapest	Cashback path
Expedia	Flight-plus-hotel packages on fixed dates around a Saver award	Shoulder season and the Black Friday to Cyber Monday travel sales (Nov 27 to 30)	Activate ShopBack, then shop Expedia
Trip.com	Paid one-way positioning fares and domestic connectors to Newark, Chicago or Denver	The October window before Thanksgiving pricing peaks	Activate ShopBack, then shop Trip.com
Booking.com	Hotel nights with flexible cancellation while you wait for award space to open	Midweek stays and the quiet weeks after the holiday rush	Activate ShopBack, then shop Booking.com
Hotels.com	Repeat hotel bookers on a multi-stop itinerary	Comparable to Booking.com on most dates; compare both on the day	Activate ShopBack, then shop Hotels.com

The 2025 cuts: what United actually did

Two changes reshaped MileagePlus in 2025, and both took effect within a three-month window.

Excursionist Perk elimination, August 21, 2025. The Excursionist Perk was introduced in 2016 as a partial replacement for United's older, more generous stopover policy. It let a MileagePlus member add a free one-way intra-region segment on a multi-city award as long as the free leg met specific rules: it had to start and end in the same non-origin region, it had to price at a Saver level, and it could not sit at the start of the itinerary.

In practical terms, a US flyer redeeming miles from New York to London and back to Newark could insert a free London to Rome segment, turning a two-flight award into a three-flight itinerary at the same mile cost. For US-based travelers building a European vacation with one open jaw, the perk added roughly 20 to 30 percent of value on top of a standard round-trip redemption.

It closed for all new bookings on August 21, 2025, per United's own communication and confirmed by Travel-Dealz, AwardWallet, and Upgraded Points. Existing bookings retain the perk unless the flyer changes them post August 21.

Fixed upgrade award chart removed, November 24, 2025. The second 2025 cut targeted upgrades. Until November 24, 2025, United published a fixed MileagePlus upgrade award chart showing the mile-plus-copay figure for upgrading a paid ticket into a higher cabin. From that date, upgrade pricing moved to a dynamic model, meaning the miles required depend on route, cabin, and demand rather than a lookup table.

As with the 2019 award chart removal, the immediate practical effect on average redemption prices was small, but the removal of the ceiling means quiet upward drift over time. Live From A Lounge and View from the Wing both flagged this as the more consequential of the two 2025 cuts because it removes the anchor.

Instant confirmed upgrades for high-fare classes ended in August 2025. A quieter but related change: instant confirmed upgrades on Y, B, and M fare buckets, which had let elite members immediately confirm an upgrade at booking on the highest-fare tickets when seats were open, ended alongside the Excursionist Perk on August 21, 2025.

Activate cashback via ShopBack before checkout at eligible online travel partners at shopback.com/travel so any paid domestic segments or positioning flights that pair with a 2026 MileagePlus redemption earn cashback on top of the miles. That layer stacks cleanly with the MileagePlus miles you would have earned on the paid ticket anyway.

The 2019 precedent: how United devalues

The most useful framework for forecasting the 2026 and 2027 arc is to look at what United did after the 2019 award chart elimination, because that is the closest historical analogue to the November 2025 upgrade chart removal.

Late 2019: fixed award chart removed. United eliminated its published award chart in late 2019, ahead of any of the other US legacy carriers except Delta (which removed its own chart in 2015). The immediate effect on Saver award pricing was modest. Redemption anchors stayed close to the last-published chart for the first few months.

April 2020 and beyond: quiet inflation. Within six months, award prices at the low end drifted up. One Mile at a Time documented specific redemption categories that jumped 20 to 40 percent in the first year after the chart came down.

2023 devaluation round. Business class awards to Japan increased from 70,000 to 100,000 miles (a 43 percent jump); economy awards to Europe rose from 30,000 to 40,000 miles (a 33 percent increase). Partner awards on the unpublished chart increased up to 47 percent on some routes, per Frequent Miler. The pattern was not one huge devaluation; it was a stack of no-notice adjustments that added up.

2024 partner hikes. Intra-Europe and intra-Asia business class prices on Star Alliance partners rose by up to 200 percent on some redemptions, per View from the Wing coverage. Long-haul partner business awards continued drifting up quietly.

2025 saver-award drift. One Mile at a Time documented that saver-level award costs increased by an average of over 30 percent for most routes in the 12 months leading into 2025, whether traveling on United or partner airlines.

The takeaway for 2026 and 2027 is that the fixed upgrade award chart removal in November 2025 will follow the same trajectory the Saver chart followed after 2019. The first six months will look calm. By mid-2026, quiet upward drift on high-demand routes and peak-date upgrades. By 2027, expect a specific named devaluation round on top of the underlying dynamic drift, following the 2023 template.

---

2026: what actually changes

2026 is the calm year in this three-year arc, and that framing matters because it opens a window for US flyers to book at close-to-fixed-chart rates before the 2027 dynamic transition.

Elite status thresholds flat. 2026 is the first year in the post-pandemic era in which the Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) and Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF) thresholds are not increasing, per AwardWallet and Upgraded Points. For US flyers on the borderline between Premier Silver and Premier Gold, or between Gold and Platinum, that means a lower bar in real terms since spending on flights tends to rise year over year.

Premier upgrade eligibility on award tickets. From February 1, 2026, all Premier members can request complimentary Premier Upgrades on award tickets, which was previously not allowed. Combined with expanded Saver Award availability in United Polaris for co-branded card holders plus Premier Silver and Gold, this is the single most positive 2026 change for MileagePlus. Award ticket plus operational upgrade is a strong combination if your travel dates are flexible enough to hunt Saver space in the first place.

Expanded Polaris Saver availability. United is opening more Polaris (business class) Saver Award inventory to co-branded card holders and Premier Silver and Gold members, per Business Traveller's 2026 changes coverage. That reverses a long trend of Polaris Saver space being restricted to Platinum and 1K elites and Chase Sapphire Reserve holders. If you have been sitting on a mile balance waiting for Polaris Saver space to open, 2026 is the year to check hard.

Dynamic pricing on Star Alliance partners continues drifting up. Partner awards continue to price on the unpublished dynamic model United has run since 2020, with drift matching the pattern of 2024 (intra-Europe and intra-Asia business class up sharply) and 2025 (saver level up roughly 30 percent on average). For US flyers, the partner sweet spots that remain competitive as of 2026 include ANA business class from the US West Coast to Tokyo (long the highest-value MileagePlus redemption on paper), Lufthansa First from Frankfurt or Munich (space is scarce and released close to departure but pricing has held), and Singapore Airlines premium cabins on the East Coast route via Frankfurt when space appears.

Book flights via ShopBack partners including Booking.com, Expedia, and Trip.com to earn cashback on the paid legs of a 2026 mixed-cabin trip. Start at shopback.com/travel to see current cashback rates on eligible travel partners before you finalize the booking. A US flyer on a Polaris Saver plus paid domestic positioning itinerary can usually recover meaningful cashback on the hotel and rental car legs, which offsets a chunk of the mile cost.

2027: the PlusPoints dynamic shift

The 2027 change to watch is the PlusPoints move to dynamic pricing.

What PlusPoints do today. Premier Platinum members earn 40 PlusPoints per status year, and Premier 1K members earn 280 PlusPoints. PlusPoints price against a fixed chart: a set number of PlusPoints upgrade a paid ticket to the next cabin, depending on route length, upgrade cabin, and origin fare bucket. For US flyers, the most common redemption is a transcontinental (JFK to San Francisco, JFK to Los Angeles) or transatlantic (Newark to London Heathrow) paid economy fare upgraded to business or Polaris with PlusPoints. Under the fixed chart, that upgrade cost is knowable in advance, which is why frequent flyers optimize their status hunt around banking exactly the PlusPoints they need for the trips they know about.

What changes February 2027. Beginning February 2027, PlusPoints pricing moves to a demand-based dynamic model. The exact number of PlusPoints required for an upgrade will vary by cabin, route, and demand at the time of booking, per AwardWallet. Business Traveller and Upgraded Points both flag this as the most consequential MileagePlus change on the announced roadmap.

How this will play out. Based on the 2019 award chart removal precedent, the first six months of 2027 will look calm. PlusPoints upgrade cost on average routes will hover near fixed-chart levels. Peak-date and premium-route upgrades (Christmas week Newark to Zurich in Polaris, Thanksgiving JFK to San Francisco in first) will price sharply higher. By late 2027, PlusPoints on those routes could require 50 percent to 100 percent more points than the fixed chart currently prescribes.

The hedge for 2026 US flyers. Burn banked PlusPoints on 2026 travel, especially on routes you already know are premium-demand. A Premier Platinum with 40 PlusPoints unused as of December 2026 who lets them expire into the dynamic year is taking real, uncompensated risk. If you can put those PlusPoints on a January 2027 Newark to Frankfurt Polaris upgrade instead, the fixed chart still applies until February 2027, and the value is locked in.

Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking your 2026 to early-2027 trips to layer cashback on the hotel side of an itinerary you are already anchoring around a PlusPoints upgrade. That two-part stack (miles plus PlusPoints on flights, ShopBack cashback on hotels) is the strongest US flyer play through the transition.

Side by side: 2025 vs 2026 vs 2027

Dimension	2025 (what happened)	2026 (what changes)	2027 (forecast)
Excursionist Perk	Ended Aug 21 for new bookings	Not available on new awards	Not returning
Fixed upgrade award chart	Removed Nov 24	Dynamic pricing full year	Continued upward drift
Instant confirmed upgrades on Y/B/M fares	Ended Aug 21	Not returning	Not returning
Premier upgrade on award tickets	Not eligible	Eligible for all Premier from Feb 1	Continues
Polaris Saver space	Restricted	Expanded for co-brand card holders + Silver/Gold	Likely continues, expect quiet re-tightening
Elite status thresholds	Increased vs 2024	Flat vs 2025 (first time post-pandemic)	Likely rise again
PlusPoints upgrade pricing	Fixed chart	Fixed chart (still)	Dynamic from Feb 2027
Partner (Star Alliance) award pricing	Dynamic, drifted 30%+	Dynamic, expect continued drift	Named devaluation round likely
Best sweet spots	ANA business US-Tokyo, Lufthansa First	Same, plus expanded Polaris Saver	Book before Feb 2027
Miles-value hedge for US flyers	Save for 2026 use	Redeem, do not hoard	Diversify to Delta/AA/transferable

The visible pattern: 2025 was the year of the structural cuts, 2026 is a marginally positive year with a dynamic overhang, and 2027 is when the PlusPoints hedge either pays off or comes due.

What is still worth using MileagePlus for in 2026

Not all sweet spots have collapsed. For US flyers holding MileagePlus balances, the redemption categories that still work are narrower than they used to be, but they still exist.

Short-haul domestic Saver. United still publishes Saver level awards on short-haul domestic routes at 10,000 to 12,500 miles one way, and those redemptions still hold. For a US flyer with a MileagePlus mile balance and a last-minute Newark to Charlotte or Chicago to Nashville trip, Saver pricing on a paid-fare equivalent of $200 to $350 still delivers roughly 2 cents per mile of value, above The Points Guy's 1.4 cent baseline valuation.

ANA business class US to Japan. ANA business class awards from US West Coast gateways (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle) to Tokyo have historically priced at 75,000 to 88,000 MileagePlus miles one way at the Saver level. That pricing has held through the 2024 to 2025 partner devaluation waves better than most partner routes. If ANA space is open when you search, it remains the strongest MileagePlus redemption in the program in 2026.

Lufthansa First from Europe. Lufthansa First Class space typically releases 14 days out from departure to Star Alliance partners, and MileagePlus can book it. Pricing has crept up over the last three years but the fixed Saver level remains competitive relative to what Lufthansa First costs in cash (a $12,000-plus paid ticket routinely).

Newark short-haul Polaris. Newark to London, Newark to Zurich, Newark to Frankfurt in Polaris Saver, when space is open, remains a reasonable use of miles at 60,000 to 70,000 miles one way. The expanded 2026 Polaris Saver space for Silver and Gold members widens access to this category.

Award ticket plus Premier upgrade. The 2026 rule change that allows Premier members to request complimentary Premier Upgrades on award tickets opens a new stacked redemption: book a Saver Award domestic ticket for 12,500 miles, request the operational upgrade to first class as a Premier Gold or Platinum, and get a first class seat for the miles cost of an economy Saver award. This category did not exist before February 2026.

Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers, carefully. MileagePlus is one of Chase Ultimate Rewards' airline transfer partners at 1 to 1. That still holds. But given the 2027 transition risk, most transferable-points guides now recommend holding Ultimate Rewards in the Chase account rather than pre-emptively transferring to MileagePlus for a speculative 2027 or 2028 trip. Transfer at the moment you can see award space and price.

Activate cashback via ShopBack before checkout at eligible online partners at shopback.com to earn on the paid legs (hotels, rental cars, positioning fares) around any of these Saver redemptions. Start at shopback.com/travel to see current cashback rates on eligible travel partners before finalizing the booking, since cashback via ShopBack posts to your ShopBack account separately from any MileagePlus miles earned on the same purchase.

Urgency signals: what to watch for in the next 12 months

Three signals will tell US flyers whether the 2027 forecast is playing out on schedule or accelerating.

Signal 1: Saver level pricing on Star Alliance partners between now and early 2026. If ANA, Lufthansa, or Singapore Airlines business class Saver level rises by more than 15 percent on the standard US to Europe or US to Asia routes before January 2026, that is the early tell that 2027's named devaluation round is landing earlier than the fixed February 2027 PlusPoints date.

Signal 2: PlusPoints redemption cost on peak dates in late 2026. If PlusPoints on a January or February 2027 Newark to London Polaris upgrade start showing higher redemption cost than the current fixed chart even before the February 2027 formal change, that signals United is soft-launching dynamic PlusPoints ahead of schedule.

Signal 3: Polaris Saver space visibility. The expanded 2026 Polaris Saver space for co-brand card holders plus Silver and Gold is the positive counterweight to the dynamic drift. If Polaris Saver space stays visible through Q1 2026 and quietly disappears in Q2 or Q3, that is a warning that United is re-tightening the category.

For US flyers, the practical hedge is to lock in Saver Award bookings for 2026 travel now, stack PlusPoints on premium-route upgrades before February 2027, and route the paid hotel plus positioning fare legs through ShopBack. Compare cashback on shopback.com before your next travel booking so the cashback layer offsets a piece of the mile inflation on the paid side of the itinerary.

Where cashback fits

Cashback is the step after you have chosen the seller, not the reason to choose one. Decide first whether a leg is a Saver award, a PlusPoints upgrade on a paid fare, or a plain cash booking, then pick the site that wins on price for the cash legs: Expedia for packages, Trip.com for positioning fares, Booking.com or Hotels.com for the hotel night. Activate ShopBack before you click through so the paid spend tracks.

The purchases around a MileagePlus year are ShopBack merchants too. Chain stays on a Europe or Japan redemption at Marriott, the rental car at the far end from Hertz or Avis, and tours and airport transfers on the ground side at Klook all sit on the same account as the flight bookings.

One caution: ShopBack cashback is a separate rebate paid by ShopBack on the merchant leg. This article makes no claim about combining it with MileagePlus miles, Premier status credit, PlusPoints, card multipliers or hotel loyalty points, which are each governed by their own program terms.

Frequently asked questions

What happened to United MileagePlus in 2025?

Two structural changes hit MileagePlus in 2025. First, the Excursionist Perk ended for new bookings on August 21, 2025, closing the free intra-region one-way segment that had let members stretch a multi-city award into three flights for the price of two. Second, the fixed MileagePlus upgrade award chart came down on November 24, 2025, moving cash-plus-miles upgrades and PlusPoints-adjacent upgrade pricing toward a demand-driven model. Together those two changes reduced the redemption ceiling for US flyers who used to stack a stopover on a Europe or Asia award (AwardWallet).

How did the Excursionist Perk work before it ended?

The Excursionist Perk, introduced in 2016, added a free one-way intra-region segment to a qualifying multi-city award booking. A US flyer redeeming miles from New York to London and back to Newark could insert a free London to Rome segment, effectively getting three flights for the miles cost of two, as long as the free segment stayed inside the same region as the return. It ended for all new bookings on August 21, 2025 (Travel-Dealz).

When did United remove the fixed upgrade award chart?

November 24, 2025. From that date, United no longer displays a fixed MileagePlus upgrade award chart on its website, and mileage upgrades price dynamically based on cabin, route, and demand (Live From A Lounge).

Which changes hit United MileagePlus in 2026?

2026 is a mixed year. Elite status thresholds are not increasing for the first time in the post-pandemic era. From February 1, 2026, all Premier members can request complimentary upgrades on award tickets, and expanded Saver Award availability opens in United Polaris for co-branded card holders plus Premier Silver and Gold (Upgraded Points).

Will 2027 PlusPoints dynamic pricing hit US flyers hard?

Starting February 2027, PlusPoints upgrades move from a fixed chart to a dynamic model where the PlusPoints required will vary by demand, cabin, and route. For US flyers who reliably banked 40 PlusPoints as a Premier Platinum and used them on transcontinental or transatlantic upgrades, the shift will make upgrade cost harder to predict and, on peak dates, likely more expensive.

Is MileagePlus still worth using in 2026?

Yes, in narrower categories than it was. Short-haul domestic Saver awards, ANA business class from the US West Coast to Tokyo, Lufthansa First from Europe on 14-day release, Newark short-haul Polaris on Saver, and the newly available Premier upgrade on award tickets all remain competitive redemptions. The value case has shifted from stopover-optimized itineraries to short-list Saver sweet spots.

Can I earn cashback when booking travel through ShopBack?

Compare flights and hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to see live cashback offers on eligible bookings at partner online travel agencies, hotel chains, and eligible travel partners. Start at shopback.com/travel, click through to the eligible partner, and complete the booking in one session so the click is tracked. Cashback via ShopBack posts to your ShopBack account and is separate from any MileagePlus miles you earn on the same purchase.

Should I burn my United miles before 2027?

Yes for large balances tied to speculative upgrades, no for balances earmarked for specific Saver bookings with award space already visible. The 2027 PlusPoints shift devalues speculative PlusPoint hoards, so use them on 2026 upgrades if you can. Saver mile balance retains value for as long as United publishes any Saver rate, which it still does.

Are Star Alliance partner awards on United still a sweet spot?

Partial. United removed the partner award chart in April 2020 and has quietly raised partner pricing multiple times since, including a 2023 round with 33 to 47 percent hikes on select partner routes (Frequent Miler) and further business class increases in 2024 and 2025. ANA, Lufthansa, and Singapore Airlines Saver awards still appear at pricing well below United's own transatlantic and transpacific business class levels.

Where does ShopBack fit into a MileagePlus flyer's booking stack?

Book flights and hotels via ShopBack partners such as Booking.com, Expedia, Trip.com, and eligible hotel chains to earn cashback on the paid segments of a mixed itinerary. Miles cover the long-haul, cashback via ShopBack offsets the paid hotel nights, positioning stops, and the domestic connectors that do not price well on MileagePlus.

Which United sweet spot is still safe to book in Q4 2026 before the next devaluation?

The safest United sweet spots to book in Q4 2026 before the February 2027 PlusPoints reset are ANA business class from LAX, SFO, or IAH to Tokyo Haneda at 88,000 miles one-way, Lufthansa First from Europe on 14-day release at 110,000 miles one-way (when it appears), Newark short-haul Polaris on Saver, and the newly stacked Saver Award plus Premier Upgrade combo available to all Premier tiers on award tickets. Star Alliance partner awards on Singapore Airlines are also holding. Book paid hotel nights and positioning fares through ShopBack Travel Planner so cashback tracks within 48 hours on the cash portion of the trip, offsetting mile inflation on the paid side.

How much cashback do you get on flights and hotels via ShopBack?

Cashback rates on flight and hotel bookings via ShopBack are published on each merchant's ShopBack page (Booking.com, Expedia, Trip.com, Hotels.com, Marriott, Hilton) and update through the year, historically running in a 3 to 8 percent range on OTA hotel partners and lower on flight-only bookings. Rates are quoted on eligible booking value, exclude taxes and government fees in most cases, and post separately from any MileagePlus miles you earn on the same booking. Check the live rate on shopback.com before you click through so the click is tracked correctly.

Does ShopBack cashback stack with MileagePlus miles and credit card rewards?

Yes. ShopBack cashback is card-agnostic, so a US flyer paying with a Chase Sapphire Reserve or United Explorer card earns the card's travel multiplier on the paid rate at the same time ShopBack cashback tracks on the booking. MileagePlus miles on the flight itself also earn on top, so a cash-paid booking through a ShopBack partner delivers a triple-earn: cashback, card points, and MileagePlus miles.

Is MileagePlus better than Delta SkyMiles or American AAdvantage in 2026?

For US flyers based in a United hub city (Newark, Chicago, Denver, Houston, San Francisco, Washington Dulles), MileagePlus is still the strongest program on route network and Star Alliance partner access. Delta SkyMiles has stronger domestic operational reliability and Amex transfer support but weaker partner sweet spots. American AAdvantage retains web-specials domestic sweet spots and a still-published partner chart. Non-hub US flyers holding transferable points should split earn between MileagePlus, SkyMiles, and Chase or Amex, rather than concentrating in one program before 2027.

When is the best time to book a MileagePlus Saver award?

Book domestic Saver awards 3 to 8 weeks out for the widest availability, and international partner Saver (ANA, Lufthansa First) 11 months out at schedule open or in the 14 to 21 day final release window. Peak US award windows to avoid or book 10 to 11 months out: Thanksgiving week, Christmas and New Year, spring break, July 4 week, and Labor Day weekend. Compare hotels via ShopBack Travel Planner before booking to check the cash rate for paired hotel nights so cashback tracks on the paid portion of the trip.

How many days does ShopBack travel cashback take to process?

Travel booking cashback on ShopBack typically tracks within 48 hours of the click and confirms after the travel is complete plus the merchant's own attribution window, which for most OTA partners lands in the 60 to 90 day range from booking date. Confirmed cashback appears in your ShopBack account and becomes withdrawable per the country payout thresholds published on shopback.com. Cashback timing is independent of MileagePlus mile posting, which follows the airline's own base earn schedule.

Does ShopBack cashback apply on united.com bookings or the United mobile app?

No, ShopBack cashback requires a click through from the ShopBack site to an eligible merchant partner. Direct bookings on united.com or in the United mobile app do not currently earn ShopBack cashback since United is not a ShopBack travel partner for direct flight bookings. To earn cashback, route hotel and OTA-based flight bookings through ShopBack partners like Booking.com, Expedia, or Trip.com in a browser session that starts at shopback.com.

How much can I save on United flights per year with ShopBack plus MileagePlus?

A US flyer running 6 to 10 paid United trips per year plus 3 to 5 award redemptions can layer ShopBack cashback historically in the 3 to 8 percent range on the paid hotels, positioning fares booked via OTA partners, and rental cars, recovering roughly $150 to $600 per year on the paid side of the itinerary. MileagePlus miles cover the long-haul flight, ShopBack cashback offsets the paid legs, and the combined stack is the highest-leverage US frequent-flyer routine through the 2027 PlusPoints transition.

Should I book the paid legs around a United award through Expedia, Trip.com or Booking.com in Q4 2026?

It depends on the leg. A fixed-date flight-plus-hotel package around a Saver award usually prices best on Expedia; a one-way positioning fare or domestic connector into Newark, Chicago or Denver is a Trip.com job; a hotel night you may need to cancel if award space shifts belongs on Booking.com for its flexible rates. MileagePlus miles credit on the operating carrier regardless of where you buy the paid ticket, subject to fare class. Check ShopBack before you book so the cash legs track cashback at whichever site wins on price that day.

Key takeaways

• United MileagePlus went through three named cuts between August 2025 and February 2027: Excursionist Perk elimination, fixed upgrade award chart removal, and dynamic PlusPoints. The middle year of 2026 is the calm before the PlusPoints reset.
• 2026 is marginally positive for members: elite status thresholds hold flat, all Premier members can request upgrades on award tickets from February, and Polaris Saver space expands for co-branded card holders plus Premier Silver and Gold.
• 2027's February PlusPoints shift is the change to hedge against: the fixed chart goes away, and dynamic pricing means peak-date upgrade cost will drift up quietly. Burn banked PlusPoints on 2026 travel where possible.
• Historical precedent (2019 award chart removal to 2023 named devaluation round) suggests the fixed upgrade chart removal in November 2025 will show quiet upward drift by mid-2026 and a specific named devaluation by late 2027.
• Sweet spots that still work in 2026 include short-haul domestic Saver, ANA business class US to Tokyo, Lufthansa First on 14-day release, Newark short-haul Polaris on Saver, and the newly stacked Saver Award plus Premier Upgrade combo.
• Star Alliance partner awards on ANA, Lufthansa, and Singapore Airlines remain the strongest MileagePlus category, but each has drifted up in 2023 to 2025. Book Saver space when it appears rather than waiting.
• Chase Ultimate Rewards balances should stay in the Chase account rather than pre-emptively transferring to MileagePlus for speculative future trips; transfer at the moment award space is visible.
• Route paid hotels, rental cars, and positioning fares around Saver redemptions through ShopBack partners to earn cashback on the paid legs of a mixed cash-and-miles itinerary.
• Verify current award pricing, PlusPoints levels, and Saver space directly on united.com or a partner search tool before assuming any specific redemption still prices at the levels quoted here, since the program is now fully dynamic on the flight side.
